Relative Bioavailability of Folic Acid and L-5-Methlytetrahydrofolate

Folic acid, a form of the vitamin folate, is added to grain products in Canada to help reduce birth defects. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate and is very stable (doesn't break down) when added to foods. There are emerging health concerns about chronic folic acid consumption. Recently another more natural form of folate, L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-MTHF) has become available. The investigators plan to conduct a randomized trial in women to determine if supplements containing L-MTHF consumed over three months raises blood folate levels as much as supplements containing folic acid. The investigators hypothesize that L-MTHF will increase red cell folate over 12 weeks to same extent as equimolar folic acid.

Pilot Study: Active Video Gaming to Facilitate Physical Activity and Quality of Life in Kidney Transplant Recipients

Background: Renal transplant recipients have a greater risk of morbidity and mortality primarily due to cardiovascular disease when compared to the general population. Cardiovascular disease is responsible for 50% to 60% percent of deaths amongst renal transplant population and death from cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of functioning graft loss. Physical activity is an effective form of secondary prevention in existing cardiovascular disease reducing all-cause mortality by 25%-30% and has demonstrated positive effects overall on quality of life and well-being. Transplant patients who participated in regular cardiovascular exercise have significant more positive scores on the SF-36 Health Status Questionnaire in comparison to inactive transplant recipients. Active video gaming is evolving as an innovative method to increase physical activity. Active video gaming has supported physical activity in children and youth. There is however a paucity of literature examining interactive games as a means to facilitate physical activity and its impact on CVD and quality of life in the adult population nor any literature examining AVG and its impact on an adult surgical population. This pilot study is designed to determine if Active Video Gaming is feasible and is able to lead to behavioral modifications and Quality of Life improvement. Subject Selection: This is a pilot study during which 10 patients who have undergone renal transplant will be selected to exercise with Active Video Gaming for a duration of 3 months. The program activity will begin 6 months post surgery.

A secondary purpose is to learn more about psychosocial outcomes in children with congenital heart disease and their families over time. About 250 mothers and fathers at 15 medical centers will take part in this study; 35 will be from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of 3 dosing regimens of MEMP1972A in patients with allergic asthma who remain inadequately controlled on chronic therapy with high dose inhaled corticosteroids and a second controller medication.Patients will be randomized to 4 Arms to receive subcutaneous repeating dose of either MEMP1972A 150 mg, 300 mg, or 450 mg, or placebo. Patients will continue their usual asthma medication throughout the study. Anticipated time on study treatment is 36 weeks, with a 48-week follow-up.

Hypothesis: The use of teleophthalmology for patient screening will result in more rapid patient access for treatment. The use of teleophthalmology to monitor patients with wet AMD post-treatment will result in maintenance of good visual outcomes combined with a reduction in patient travel and improved patients satisfaction in a cost effective manner. Objectives : The Evaluation of Teleophthalmology in AMD project objectives are as follows: 1. To evaluate the efficacy of teleophthalmology in screening patients referred to retina specialists for suspected wet AMD. 2. To compare the "time to treatment/retreatment" with this program with that of patient's entering the system and being followed conventionally to determine the efficacy of teleophthalmology to provide rapid entry/re-entry into treatment programs. 3. To determine the efficacy of teleophthalmology in monitoring patients with wet AMD post therapy. 4. To determine the compliance rate for monitoring wet AMD during follow-up utilizing teleophthalmology. 5. To evaluate the cost effectiveness of teleophthalmology in screening/monitoring wet AMD patients including direct costs to the OHIP system and indirect costs to the patient/caregiver. 6. To assess patient satisfaction with teleophthalmology versus standard clinical care in the monitoring of post-treatment wet AMD. 7. To evaluate teleophthalmology as a tool for communication between community based Optometrists /Ophthalmologists and Retina Specialists.
