Analysis of Fel d 1-specific T Cells After Airway Allergen Challenge in Asthma

Cat allergies are a major trigger of asthma. Therapies are being developed to control the allergic response to cats. We are interested in measuring a type of white blood cell which is linked to cat allergies, which will help us understand how to use new therapies in people who suffer from cat allergies and asthma. We will study cat-allergic individuals with stable, mild asthma who will be exposed to cat allergens. We will measure various white blood cells, including the cells that are linked to cat allergies, to determine whether the number of these cells changes following cat exposure. These cells will be measured from the blood and bone marrow by removing samples using a needle. These cells will also be measured from the lungs by inserting a bronchoscope into the airways and drawing up fluid containing cells. This study will improve our understanding of the harmful versus protective role of these cat-specific cells, and will allow for development of better drugs for treatment of asthma triggered by cat exposure.

The aim is to investigate if there is a correlation between x-ray results, specific proteins/markers and different types of pain in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. The study consists of 3 visits over 3-20 days and the last visit will be the day of surgery.

Multicenter Schroth Exercise Trial for Scoliosis

The primary aim of this multicenter randomized controlled trial is to compare the effect of a 6 month "Schroth exercise program combined with standard-of-care" to "standard-of-care alone" on scoliosis curve severity measured using the Cobb angle. Secondary aims include: 1. To determine the effect of Schroth exercises at 6 months on secondary outcomes including quality-of-life, spinal appearance, objective posture and spinal muscle endurance measurements. 2. To determine the efficacy of 6 months of Schroth therapy offered to control participants after completing 6 months in the standard-of care group (using subjects as their own controls) 3. To determine if the effects of the 6 months supervised Schroth exercise program can be maintained after supervised therapy is terminated. At Hopital Ste-Justine, the following secondary aims will be pursued to examine the preliminary evidence about the effect of Global Postural Re-education (to satisfy the local ethics committee request because Global Postural Re-education exercises were offered routinely to patients at that institution prior to the trial). A. To compare the effect and to quantify the treatment effect sizes of 6 months of "Global Postural Re-education exercises with North American standard Care consisting of only observation and bracing" to "Schroth exercises combined with North American standard care" and to "North American standard care alone" on scoliosis curve severity measured using the Cobb angle. B. To estimate the effect and quantify the treatment effect sizes of 6 months of "Global Postural Re-education exercises with North American standard Care" to "Schroth exercises combined with North American standard care" and to "North American standard care alone" on outcomes including quality-of-life, perceived spinal appearance, objective posture and spinal muscle endurance measurements. C. To determine if the effects of "Global Postural Re-education exercises with North American standard Care" can be maintained after discontinuing supervision. D. To estimate the feasibility of conducting a randomized trial focused on Global Postural Re-education exercises by quantifying enrollment rates, attendance at scheduled exercise sessions and compliance with the home exercises prescribed.

Panda: Evaluation of a Smartphone-based Perioperative Pain Assessment Tool

This study will evaluate Panda, a smartphone-based pain assessment tool. During a child's recovery from surgery, a Post-Anesthetic Care Unit nurse will assess their pain, which helps determine what medication they need. Traditionally, this involves asking the child to rate their pain on a scale from 1 to 10, by moving a slider along a coloured scale or pointing to one of a series of faces on a piece of card. The Panda uses the same methods, but presents them on a smartphone screen. Our evaluation will ensure that the Panda gives the same pain scores as the traditional methods.

Proper bowel cleansing prior is an essential requirement for the conduct of colonoscopy. However, due to the nature of cleansing process, the ideal bowel cleansing preparation remains elusive. The objective of this study is to compare the efficacy, safety and tolerability of oral polyethylene glycol lavage given either as a single dose or split dose. The study will be a randomized controlled single blind two group study. The primary study outcomes will be the previously validated Ottawa bowel preparation score.

The Glycemic Response Elicited by Beta-glucans of Different Physical Properties and Form

The ability of oat β-glucan to lower postprandial glycemic responses has been attributed to the viscosity of the solution in which the fibre is solubilized. To our knowledge, no studies have investigated the effect of β-glucan solutions on glycemic response when concentration, and thus viscosity, is varied by changing the solution volume but not the β-glucan dose. Therefore, the investigators will test the effects of altering β-glucan solution viscosity by altering solution volume at a fixed amount of β-glucan fibre.
