The frequent consumption of pulses is associated with multiple cardiometabolic benefits in adults including a lower risk for overweight and obesity. However, it remains unclear whether these effects are mediated through the short-term mechanisms, including enhanced satiety and reduced food intake (FI), or through the long-term metabolic effects triggered by regular consumption of pulses. The objective of this study is to investigate the short-term effect of cooked pulses served in the amount similar to their recommended serving of 175ml (3/4 cup) on food intake in 12-14y children, and gastrointestinal comfort over 2-hours. The secondary objective is to evaluate how children perceive the sensory characteristics of the meals made with the whole pulses.
Canada's Food Guide (2007) recommended 7-10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day for a normal adult population. Although fruit juice (125 ml) is considered as one serving of fruits, the consumption of some fruit juices may be limited due to their high amount of sugar. The consumption of sugary drinks can lead to a rapid rise in postprandial glycaemia. Wild blueberries, due to their high level of anthocyanins, may provide multiple health benefits including improved blood glucose control, however, the consumption of fresh berries is limited by their short seasonal availability. Hydro-Thermodynamic (HTD) processing of blueberries allows the processing of whole berries including their skin and seeds into a beverage with the amount of anthocyanins comparable with fresh berries. The objective of the study is to investigate the effect of HTD-processed blueberries on postprandial glycaemia and antioxidant activity.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disorder caused by wear and tear on the joint over time; as a result, the protective cartilage of the bone in the joint gradually wears down. The lifetime risk of developing OA in the knee, with symptoms such as pain, aching, and stiffness, is 40% in men and 47% in women. It is estimated that approximately 19% of Americans aged 45 and older are affected by knee OA. Knee OA accounts for 83% of the global burden caused by all OA types. Pain and stiffness in knees, a large weight-bearing joint, often leads to disability, which interferes with daily life activities and demands expensive medical treatments or care. Due to the limitations of current OA treatment methods, there is an increasing demand for effective and safer alternatives, such as natural health products with pain-relieving potential. The investigational product, JointAlive™, is a supplement designed to alleviate knee OA symptoms and to improve knee functionality. The present study will investigate the safety and efficacy of JointAlive™ in reducing knee OA symptoms and improving joint functionality in an otherwise healthy adult population with mild to moderate knee OA. The primary objective of this study is to examine the feasibility of a Facebook group-based program to support adults with diabetes in their foot self-care and prevention of foot ulcers. The sub-objectives are: 1. To determine the recruitment and retention rate of participants in the study. 2. To assess the acceptability of the Facebook group program among participants. 3. To determine the level and pattern of engagement by the participants within the Facebook group platform. 4. To determine the efficacy of the Facebook group program and how it works to improve diabetic foot care-related outcomes.
This is a single arm, single centre, investigator initiated study to investigate the use of FAZA-PET in combination with MRI. FAZA is an investigational radiotracer used in PET scans. FAZA PET-MRI will be used to measure hypoxia in up to 20 patients with unresectable, non-metastatic, locally advanced un-resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma (LAPAC). After each FAZA PET-MRI scan, patients will be followed up via telephone, 48 hours after the imaging session to assure that the procedure was tolerated without side effects. Patients will undergo a FAZA PET-MRI scans before and after their standard of care radiation treatment.
The goal of distal attachment devices is to enhance an endoscopist's adenoma detection rate (ADR). A device called EndoCuff Vision (ECV) has been introduced that employs a single row of flexible arms to evert colonic folds, thus optimizing mucosal visualization and enhancing ADR. ECV has been shown to be efficacious in improving ADR within the context of randomized trials. However, no 'real-world' studies have been published assessing the effectiveness of ECV in non-trial settings. The primary objective of this study is to assess the effect of ECV use on ADR in a routine screening-related population.
Introduction: Second Generation Antipsychotics (SGAs) are widely used in the pediatric population. It is currently established that SGAs may induce undesirable metabolic adverse events (AEs) such as weight gain, metabolic changes in blood lipids or glucose with risk of potential cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The Canadian Alliance for Monitoring Effectiveness and Safety of Antipsychotics in children (CAMESA) has published recommendations for monitoring the metabolic AEs of SGAs in the pediatric population. Factors that may be associated with the onset of SGA's metabolic AEs and long term consequences are less studied in the literature. The objectives of our research are to evaluate some factors that can influence the development of the SGA's metabolic AEs, and to study clinical adherence to CAMESA guidelines. Methods and analysis: The MEMAS study (Monitoring des Effets Métaboliques des Antipsychotiques de Seconde Génération) design is a multicenter, prospective, longitudinal observational study with repeated measures of metabolic monitoring up to 24 months of follow-up. Two recruiting centers have been selected for patients under 18 years of age, previously naïve of antipsychotics, starting an SGA or who have started an SGA for less than 4 weeks regardless of the diagnosis that motivated the prescription. Assessments are performed at inclusion and during follow-up for anthropometric measures (AM), blood pressure (BP) and blood tests (BT) at baseline and 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 24 months of follow-up. Ethics and dissemination: The study protocol was approved by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) Sainte-Justine's Research Ethics Board (MP-21-2016-1201) in 2016 and obtained institutional suitability for the "Centre Intégré Universitaire de Santé et de Services Sociaux du Nord-de-l'Île-de-Montréal" (CIUSSS NIM) Research Center in May 2018. For all participants, written consent will be obtained from parents/caregivers as well as the participant's assent in order to enable their participation in this research project. The results of this research will be published.
Prone positioning is an established intervention in mechanically ventilated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients, with demonstrated reductions in mortality. Preliminary data suggest that awake proning in patients with COVID-19 treated with high-flow nasal oxygenation (HFNO) improves gas exchanges, and might be associated with a reduced need of mechanical ventilation, and reduced mortality. Further investigation in a formal randomized-controlled trial is need.
