There are about 28871 clinical studies being (or have been) conducted in Canada. The country of the clinical trial is determined by the location of where the clinical research is being studied. Most studies are often held in multiple locations & countries.
Dried fruits show promising potential for the management of blood glucose. Previous trials have reported beneficial effects of raisins on post-prandial glucose and insulin responses in healthy individuals when compared with white bread. However, to date there is limited data evaluating the potential beneficial effects of other dried fruits (i.e. sultanas, dates and apricots). It is also unclear whether dried fruits can be used to lower the postprandial glycemic responses to high-GI carbohydrate foods by either displacing available carbohydrate (displacement effect) or providing 'catalytic' doses of fructose ('catalytic' fructose effect). To address these questions, the investigators propose to assess the GI of 4 common types of dried fruit (raisins, sultanas, dates, apricots) (GI effect) and their ability to decrease the postprandial glycemic response to white bread by either partially displacing available carbohydrate (displacement effect) or by providing a 'catalytic' dose of fructose ('catalytic' fructose effect).
A prospective, randomized, controlled trial including patients who are diagnosed with a small renal mass (<4 cm) amenable to resection using either RALPN or LPN.
Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) are frequently hospitalized, with an increased risk of repeat hospitalizations within the same calendar year. Given that hospital readmissions represent a significant burden to patients and the health care system, a standardised pathway for IBD patients discharged from the hospital can have a significant impact on reducing readmission rates, healthcare utilization and patient satisfaction. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an IBD post-discharge pathway, involving post-discharge nurse follow-up and electronic monitoring, in reducing IBD readmission rates.
Cell-based therapies in the form of stem cell-based or immune cell-based therapies are becoming important treatment options that are either approved for clinical use or are showing promise in clinical trials. One of the issues regarding cell-based therapies is that, once the cells are injected into a subject, there is no easy way to track where they go, assess whether adequate numbers of cells arrive at the intended therapeutic target and for how long they persist at a given location. To address this issue non-invasive imaging methods have been developed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). When used with an appropriate cell labelling contrast agent, Cellular MRI can track cells non-invasively in vivo. Detection of cells is accomplished with an inert imaging agent containing the MRI sensitive fluorine-19 (19F) nuclei. The objective of this study is to demonstrate that 19F-MRI is safe to use in humans so that it can subsequently be used to track cell-based immunotherapies in future clinical trials. The long term goal is to be able to quantify immune cell migration to secondary lymphoid tissues and potentially to tumors and correlate to therapeutic outcomes.
The objective is to compare the accuracy and reproducibility of measurements taken with electronic calipers and conventional calipers. Using both calipers, reproducibility will be determined by comparing results from a number of practitioners and accuracy will be determined by comparing results with those obtained from X-rays.
Teachers are increasingly faced with classrooms of students whose needs require support far beyond what traditional teacher-training programs prepare educators to provide. The presence of students with greater challenges in classrooms is due in part to the move to a full inclusion model of education and also to the rising epidemic of mental health disorders in youth. Mental health problems affect up to one million Canadian youth and their families. However, few of these individuals (~20%) receive the support they need (Kirby, 2013; Kutcher & McLuckie, 2013). The Teacher Help research team along with industry partner, Velsoft, and key knowledge user, Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, will address this barrier by developing, evaluating, and commercializing a sustainable eHealth resource for teachers. Teacher Help is an online program that assists teachers in providing evidence-based interventions to students in grades 1-12 with mental health disorders in the classroom. The program allows teachers in a typical classroom setting to access information and expert-coach and peer support when they need it, so they can intervene early in order to reduce the negative consequences of mental health disorders in youth. Currently three modules (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD], Autism Spectrum Disorder [ASD], and Learning Disabilities [LD]) are at different stages in the innovation pipeline. The investigators will test whether teachers make good use of this program and whether it is effective in improving mental health outcomes among children and youth both at school and at home. The investigators will also study whether the program changes teacher's attitudes toward children and youth with these disorders. The investigators will provide information to the Department of Education on how to use this program. This approach will help ensure that the program will continue after the research study ends. To the Teacher Help team's knowledge Teacher Help is the first and only research-validated eHealth program directly targeting teachers to help them intervene with children and youth who have mental health disorders, thus allowing Canada to take a lead in eHealth as applied to a school context.
This study involves adding the kinase inhibitor Ruxolitinib to Ibrutinib to treat Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).
PhytoSpherix (Phx) is an all-natural, edible polysaccharide extracted from sweet corn. This carbohydrate is the major muscle fuel for intense exercise and its stores are quite small such that one can run out of it during a single exercise bout. Therefore, Phx should provide significant exercise fuel if consumed during exercise. As a result its intake could enhance intense exercise performance by providing additional fuel. This experiment Will investigate the effects of 4 different dosages of Phx consumed throughout a prolonged exercise bout on carbohydrate and fat utilization as well as its oxidation rate and perception of effort during prolonged intense exercise in trained cyclists. Muscle and liver carbohydrate stores will be examined using a non-invasive ultrasound technique.
Although allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant (AlloHSCT) is a curative treatment option for malignant hematological diseases, it is also associated with significant morbidity such as graft versus host disease, infections, and immune complications. Moreover, long-term survivors are likely to have reduced physical performance and functioning due to deconditioning, sarcopenia, and bone loss, and particularly high levels of fatigue and psycho-social stress, all of which negatively impact patients' quality of life. Purpose: To conduct a randomized controlled, single site trial investigating whether a partially supervised exercise intervention in the first 100 days post alloHSCT patients will result in improved quality of life at Day 100 post-transplant compared to standard of care treatment. Secondary objectives will investigate the effect of an exercise intervention on muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness, mobility, bone mineral density, body composition, exercise, and immunological/inflammatory biomarkers compared to standard of care. Procedure: 120 patients receiving alloHSCT will be baseline tested, and then randomized into an Exercise Intervention Group or Standard of Care Control Group.
Hip fractures are common, costly and affect older people - Canadians spend 1 billion dollars to treat hip fractures each year. Unfortunately, as many as two-thirds of hip fracture cases suffer a complication known as delirium, or acute confusion. Patients with delirium may become frightened and agitated. This in turn leads to other serious problems. Having delirium doubles the chances of dying or can increase the need for admission into a nursing home. People with delirium spend an extra week in hospital on average. Using ultrasound to locate and 'freeze' or block specific nerves can stop hip fracture pain almost immediately, and use of this technique is known to reduce delirium when administered by Anaesthetists to patients at the time of their hip operation. Unfortunately, patients with hip fractures commonly wait hours or even days in the Emergency Department (ED) prior to their operation. Currently, these patients are given narcotic pain killers like morphine to dull their pain, as most ED physicians have not been trained in using this 'freezing' technique and Anaesthetists are rarely able to leave the operating room to administer freezing to patient in the ED. The EDU-RAPID study will test whether training ED physicians on how to use the nerve freezing technique will reduce the number of patients who develop delirium after a hip fracture. To study this, ED physicians will be trained at 6 hospitals in small groups every 6 weeks over 18 months. The study will look at how patients who are treated by ED physician who has been trained compare to patients treated by a ED physician who has not yet been trained. Also, the study will see if the training motivates ED physicians to use the block regularly. If correct, this study could significantly improve the comfort, quality of life, and independence of patients who suffer a hip fracture. In addition, if the study shows a reduction in delirium rates, this could represent a significant cost reduction to the health care system.
