This pilot study will evaluate the feasibility and safety of using 1:1 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC):Cannabidiol (CBD) cannabis oil as an adjunct therapy to methadone-based Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT) for individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) in a community setting.
The NANO follow-up study is designed to determine whether a simple, cost-effective intervention- withholding antibiotics at birth- reduces clinically relevant outcomes such as behavioral and neurological impairment at 2 years of age. This study will be the largest study evaluating the effects of early antibiotics in children with comprehensive measures of neurodevelopment linked to genomic variants and microbiota interactions.
MED-EL Remote Care is a way for MED-EL cochlear implant users to check their hearing and cochlear implant device from any location, without the need for a scheduled, in-person appointment with their audiologist. This study will assess the effectiveness, efficiencies, and useability of MED-EL Remote Care.

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive, diagnostic and therapeutic gynecological surgical technique and the gold standard in the study of the uterine cavity. Thanks to the decrease in the diameter of hysteroscopes and to the vaginoscopic approach, anesthesia is no longer necessary in diagnostic hysteroscopy. Nevertheless, in operative hysteroscopy, given the instrumentalization and the need of cervical dilation, the use of local anesthesia, with or without sedation, is recommended. The different alternatives described in the literature are the following: 1. Cervical/ intracervical block: injection of local anesthetic into the four quadrants of the cervix. 2. Paracervical block: injection of local anesthetic in the cervicovaginal junction at 5 and 7 o'clock positions. 3. Transcervical (uterine) anesthesia: instillation of a local anesthetic agent via catheter through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. 4. Topical cervical anesthesia: application of local anesthetic in gel or spray to the cervix. To assess the best anesthetic pathway to decrease pain during outpatient hysteroscopy, the investigators will perform a prospective multicentric study that compare two types of local anesthesia in outpatient procedural hysteroscopy: paracervical block, that is the actual gold-standard, and transcervical instillation.
This proposal is for a Window of Opportunity (WOO) clinical trial using a novel combination of two Health Canada approved agents, cemiplimab (Libtayo) and dupilumab (Dupixent), for off label use in early-stage estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer.
Shoulder problems affect many Canadians yearly. While surgery is one of the best treatments for shoulder problems, patients are unaware about shoulder replacement surgeries, the exercises needed after surgery and how to safely recover from the surgery without having another injury. Uncertainties about the surgery and recovery process can further cause post-surgery problems such as: pain, anxiety and re-injury. While some healthcare centers offer an in- class program to educate patients before surgery, some patients face issues with distance or transportation, and cannot regularly meet their doctor to address all their concerns. This project aims to create an online educational program that will teach patients through online videos and educational materials before they go into shoulder replacement surgery. By creating online modules, it can increase the accessibility for home use, and prepare patients on topics such as: their concerns about the surgery and proper exercises they can expect after surgery for a safe recovery. The aim is to study three groups of patients before surgery; 1. a group consisting of an online pre-rehabilitation program 6 weeks before surgery, 2. a group consisting of an online pre-rehabilitation program 6 weeks before surgery + therapist or 3. A group consisting of the current standard of care, which is a WebEx pre-operative education class lead by a physiotherapist and occupational therapist. Researchers will monitor all groups on their recovery before and after surgery. This will provide another alternative to informing patients before surgery and help them to prepare better for surgery. The online modules will contribute to improving the care in Southern Ontario and eventually be used for future care across Canada.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate changes in HbA1c levels, diet, weight and waist circumference in Small Steps for Big Changes (SSBC) diabetes prevention program participants two year after program completion compared to before they took part in the program. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. Are changes in caloric, carbohydrate, and fibre intake associated with HbA1c levels after SSBC program completion in the short (3- and 6- months), medium (9- and 12- months) and long-term (21- and 24- months)? 2. Are changes in caloric, carbohydrate, and fibre intake associated with anthropometrics (weight and waist circumference) after program completion in the short (3- and 6- months), medium (9- and 12- months) and long-term (21- and 24- months)? 3. Are eating motives associated with dietary intake in individuals with prediabetes? 4. Does participation in SSBC result in changes to eating motives over time? It is hypothesized that: 1. Dietary changes will be associated with HbA1c levels at 3-, 6-,12- and 24- months post-intervention. 2. Dietary changes will be associated with weight and waist circumference at 3-, 6-, and 12-months post-intervention. 3. Participants' eating motives are associated with their dietary intake. 4. Eating motives will change after partaking in SSBC and at 3-, 6-, 12- months post intervention. A total number of 250 individuals with prediabetes will be recruited to take part in a 6-week diet and exercise changes program (SSBC). The program will be administered and facilitated by the community facility trainers at YMCA locations. Participants will be asked to visit Diabetes Prevention Research Group (DPRG) Lab in the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus for Hba1c (primary outcome), anthropometric measurements and dietary assessment.
Glaucoma is a chronic disease that causes loss of vision and potentially blindness as a result of optic nerve damage, often due to increased intraocular pressure. Glaucoma is currently the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.1 In 2020, 4.1 million and 3.6 million adults over the age of 50 suffered from mild to severe glaucoma-induced visual impairment and blindness, respectively.1 However, these figures are likely underestimated since glaucoma can remain asymptomatic until later stages in disease progression.2 The relaxation response evoked by mind-body interventions, such as breathing exercises and meditation, is known to reduce stress and improve quality of life (QOL). In a recent study, mindfulness-based meditation was found to reduce intraocular pressure and improve QOL in patients with glaucoma.3 A feasibility study will be conducted using a mixed-method design to assess the feasibility of the online delivery of an intervention titled Breathing Exercises followed by Meditation for potentially enhancing the QOL and mental health of glaucoma patients. Upon recruitment, participants will undergo blocked randomization to either the intervention arm or usual care arm, stratified by sex. Participants in each arm will complete online questionnaires at baseline and after 12 weeks to collect data on health-related quality of life (HRQOL), depression symptoms, anxiety, and sleep quality using REDCap, an electronic data capturing system provided by Lawson Health Research Institute (LHRI). Our study can help to assess the feasibility of conducting a pilot study on breathing exercises followed by meditation to assess its effects in a sample of patients with glaucoma.
Breathing, blood pressure, and blood flow into the brain are controlled - in part - by small areas in the brainstem; the central chemoreceptors. The mechanisms involved in the transmission of signals through the brainstem and also in controlling brain blood flow past the brainstem both use a molecule called serotonin. Citalopram is a "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor" (or SSRI) which means it allows serotonin to be released in the brain but stops it from being reabsorbed. SSRIs are often used as antidepressants. This study aims to investigate the influence of an SSRI on the control of brain blood flow.
