Patients with hormone sensitive oligometastatic prostate cancer (≤ 5 metastatic tumours outside of regional pelvic nodes with no more than 3 in any organ system) and no previous treatment to prostate will be treated with intermittent androgen deprivation therapy +/- chemotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy to all metastases, and either radical prostatectomy or radiotherapy.

Few existing data currently indicates that anti-inflammatory drugs could help diminish the local cervical inflammation tough to cause the dysphagia, hoarseness and dyspnea after an anterior surgical approach to the spine. This study aims to evaluate the effect of high dose of steroids on dysphagia after an anterior cervical spine procedure. Patients subjected to a cervical spine surgery through an anterior approach will be randomized to a treatment group receiving 3 doses of IV dexamethasone (decadron) and a placebo group receiving saline. Outcome will be measured with dysphagia scales, modified barium swallow and rhino-pharyngo-laryngoscopy, all done pre and post-operatively. Secondary outcomes involve neurological condition, pain and fusion rate.

Glycemic Impact on Glioblastoma Outcomes

This pilot study aims to evaluate the feasibility of close glucose monitoring and management of patients (targeting fasting and pre-meal glucose of 4-7 mmol/L) using state-of-the-art flash glucose monitoring (FGM) technology. The glycemic intervention will be personalized based on individual blood glucose levels. Although the glycemic interventions used in this study include standard medications and methods of glucose monitoring used for patients with diabetes, this pilot study will specifically evaluate the feasibility of using these approaches in patients with GBM, appreciating their additional medical, functional and social challenges.

Walk on: A Community-based Approach to Increase Physical Activity Among Men Treated for Colorectal Cancer

In Canada, over 102,900 men are diagnosed with cancer each year. Of these, 81,000 are diagnosed with colorectal cancer and an estimated 65% are expected to survive the disease for at least 5 years. Men who have completed treatment for colorectal cancer face many adverse physical, cognitive, psychological, and social effects. The Wellness Beyond Cancer Program at The Ottawa Hospital is a cancer survivorship program that helps people who have completed treatment for cancer, including men diagnosed with colorectal cancer, manage these effects. The Wellness Beyond Cancer Program does this through education and referral to supportive care services and programs offered throughout the city of Ottawa. Group-based physical activity programs are one of the varied services and programs available to adults diagnosed with cancer in Ottawa. Such programs are offered through the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation (http://www.ottawacancer.ca) and Breast Cancer Action Ottawa (http://bcaott.ca). Research on these programs show that group-based physical activity can improve disease and treatment-related effects while promoting overall quality of life amongst women with cancer. However, few of these programs have targeted men, even though their needs and preferences have been shown to be very different from women. While men diagnosed with colorectal cancer might also benefit from group-based physical activity programs offered in the community, it is not known if such programs would effectively reach them and what the impact would be on their quality of life after cancer treatment. It is believed that a men's group-based walking program could be an effective way to reach men and promote quality of life after cancer treatment. Therefore, a sustainable 8-week group-based walking program was developed. This project will seek to explore the feasibility and potential benefits of the program among men who have completed treatment for colorectal cancer and who are referred to the program from staff at the Wellness Beyond Cancer Program in a prospective single-arm trial.

Fabry Disease (FD) is a rare X-linked lysosomal storage disorder (LSD) caused by mutations in the GLA gene which translates into decreased activity or lack of function of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase A (α-GAL A) and accumulation of the enzymes substrate, i.e., Gb3, throughout the body. Cardiovascular and renal complications are among the leading causes of death in FD patients. RVX000222 is a BET inhibitor which modulates the expression of a variety of genes and, due to its effects on pathways downstream of substrate accumulation and reduction of major cardiac events, holds promise as a potential add-on therapy to accompany enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in FD patients.
