There are about 10460 clinical studies being (or have been) conducted in Australia. The country of the clinical trial is determined by the location of where the clinical research is being studied. Most studies are often held in multiple locations & countries.
Hypotheses: 1. The addition of tumour bed boost after BCS in women with non-low risk DCIS reduces the risk of local recurrence (invasive or intraductal recurrence in the ipsilateral breast). 2. The risk of local recurrence in the shorter fractionation arm is not worse than that for the standard fractionation arm. 3. A molecular signature predictive of invasive recurrence of DCIS will be detectable and the molecular signature may eventually have clinical utility for therapy individualization. Overall Objectives: 1. To improve the outcome of women with non-low risk DCIS treated with breast conserving therapy. 2. To individualize treatment selection for women with DCIS to achieve long term disease control with minimal toxicity.
This is a study to assess the effectiveness and safety of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a treatment for depressed 13-18 year olds. In rTMS high-intensity, fluctuating magnetic fields non-invasively stimulate the cortex of the brain depolarizing neurons. No anesthetic is required and the treatment in subconvulsive. Recent studies suggest that rTMS can be an effective treatment for depressive illness in adults (Loo and Mitchell, 2005) and appears to be quite safe. Minimal data of TMS use in adolescents psychiatric disorders. Data only existed in seven patients of the four that were depressed two showed improvement in their depression (Quintana, 2005). No sham-controlled studies have been conducted. The investigators wish to assess this in a sham-controlled study of 30 adolescents. The investigators hypothesize that rTMS will have an antidepressant effect and produce no neuropsychological impairment.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of memantine versus placebo on functional communication in patients with Alzheimer's Disease
The purpose of this study is to establish the largest long-term assessment of people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). In this study, the investigators associated with the Cooperative International Neuromuscular Research Group CINRG) will take a detailed look (for a minimum of eight years) at DMD participant's physical abilities, the medical problems they experience, and how they use health care services. Physical abilities will be compared to a group of healthy controls. The second purpose of this study is to find out whether small, normal differences in the genetic makeup of people with DMD (called "single nucleotide polymorphisms" or "SNPs") affect how their disease progresses and relates to muscle strength/size and steroid response. The third purpose of this study is to study genetic variations associated with DMD. The final purpose of this study is to determine whether certain biomarkers are present in people with DMD and not in healthy controls.
A multicentre, open, RCT to assess the safety and efficacy of the Navigator Guided Circulatory Management System versus conventional care in post-operative cardiac surgery patients. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate that the real time acquisition and subsequent processing and display of data produced by the Navigator guided circulatory management system provides the clinician with appropriate data and guidance to achieve and maintain a prescribed target haemodynamic stability in the post operative patient when compared to conventional care in an Intensive Care Unit setting.
A unique multinational study was conducted simultaneously in the USA, England and Australia. The goals of the study were to answer two questions: Does psychosocial support for the family enhance the effectiveness of drug treatment for Alzheimer's disease? Is the added value of psychosocial support the same in all 3 countries?
This phase II trial is studying how well giving combination chemotherapy works in treating young patients with recurrent or resistant malignant germ cell tumors. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as paclitaxel, ifosfamide, and carboplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more tumor cells.
Female subjects over the age of 40 will be recruited and randomised into a progressive resistance training (PRT) or sham-exercise group. The PRT group will train at 80% of their peak strength, using Keiser pneumatic resistance machines, and progress approximately 3% per session. Strength will be re-assessed fortnightly. Exercises will target muscles around the hip and knee. The sham-exercise group will train on the same equipment as the PRT group except hip adduction, but without added resistance or progression. Both groups will train 3 days per week for roughly 45 minutes for 6 months. It is hypothesised that high intensity PRT will decelerate the tibial and femoral cartilage degeneration in the knee affected most by OA. Primary Outcome: Articular cartilage morphology following 6 months high intensity progressive resistance training Secondary Outcomes: Muscle and fat cross-sectional area (CSA) (pre and post) Muscle strength, power, endurance, and contraction velocity (pre, 3 months, & post) Medications (pre, 3 months, & post) Body composition (pre, 3 months, & post) Balance; Physical function (pre, 3 months, & post) Questionnaires (pre, 3 months, & post) - Habitual exercise (PASE) -WOMAC index (pain, stiffness and functional ability) - Depressive symptoms (Depression Scale) -Quality of life (SF36) - Confidence performing physical activity (Ewart) -Demographics
Multicenter, open-label, study of alvocidib in previously treated chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients. Primary objective is to determine overall response rate. The secondary objectives are: - to assess overall safety, - to assess duration of response, progression free survival, and overall survival. Clinical benefit and pharmacokinetics parameters are also evaluated.
The primary objective of this study is to compare, the number of patients with heartburn and regurgitation symptom resolution after treatment with either rabeprazole 20 mg, esomeprazole 20 mg or esomeprazole 40 mg.
