This is a Phase I/II study of a drug called bortezomib given in combination with chemotherapy drugs used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) that has come back (recurred). Bortezomib is a drug that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating adults with multiple myeloma which is a type of blood cancer. Bortezomib has been shown to cause cancer cells to die in studies done on animals (mice). Studies have been done that have shown that some adults and children with cancer have shown a response to bortezomib when it is used alone. Studies have also been done in adults to evaluate the dose of bortezomib that can be safely given in combination with other chemotherapy drugs.

This is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, event-driven, superiority study for efficacy. Patients with confirmed symptomatic DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or PE (pulmonary embolism) who completed 6 or 12 months of treatment with rivaroxaban or VKA (vitamin K antagonist) are eligible for this trial (Einstein-Extension study).

This is an exploratory study to compare activity and safety in 400 patients with previously untreated metastatic carcinoma of the colon treated with UFOX (a combination regimen of UFT® (Tegafur plus Uracil), Oxaliplatin, Folinic Acid) plus Cetuximab or FOLFOX-4 (a combination regimen of 5 Fluorouracil (5-FU), Oxaliplatin and Folinic Acid) plus Cetuximab)
RATIONALE: Giving chemotherapy before a donor peripheral stem cell transplant or bone marrow transplant using stem cells from a brother or sister that closely match the patient's stem cells, helps stop the growth of cancer or abnormal cells. It also helps stop the patient's immune system from rejecting the donor's stem cells. The donated stem cells may replace the patient's immune cells and help destroy any remaining cancer or abnormal cells (graft-versus-tumor effect). Sometimes the transplanted cells from a donor can also make an immune response against the body's normal cells. Giving colony-stimulating factors, such as G-CSF, to the donor helps the stem cells move from the bone marrow to the blood so they can be collected and stored. Giving methotrexate and cyclosporine before and after transplant may stop this from happening. It is not yet known whether a donor peripheral stem cell transplant is more effective than a donor bone marrow transplant in treating hematologic cancers or other diseases. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying filgrastim-mobilized sibling donor peripheral stem cell transplant to see how well it works compared with sibling donor bone marrow transplant in treating patients with hematologic cancers or other diseases.
Abdominal obesity is strongly associated with dyslipidemia, which may account for the associated increased risk of atherosclerosis and coronary disease. Weight reduction is suggested to be a preferred and effective first-line strategy to correct lipid abnormalities, particularly in overweight/obese subjects. This improvement may be related to the effect of reduction in abdominal fat mass on apoB and apoA-I metabolism, but this remains to be fully demonstrated. Hypothesis: Reduction in abdominal fat mass by weight loss decreases apoB concentration and raises HDL-cholesterol chiefly by increasing LDL-apoB fractional catabolic rate (FCR), as well as decreasing HDL apoA-I, respectively.
The purpose of the study is to determine the safety and tolerability of two doses of Coxsackievirus A21, administered 48 hours apart into a superficial melanoma tumour. Injected and non-injected tumours will be observed regarding change in tumour size. Coxsackievirus A21 (CVA21) is a naturally occurring virus, that is known to cause self limiting upper respiratory infections. CVA21 has been shown in cell culture to infect and kill human melanoma cancer cell lines. This property of CVA21 is due to the specific receptors CVA21 uses in order to attach to, and infect a cell. The 2 receptors CVA21 uses to infect a cell are Intracellular Adhesion Molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and Decay Accelerating Factor. Both of these surface proteins are expressed on melanoma cell lines as well as human melanoma tumours. Animal models of human melanoma tumours have demonstrated that CVA21 injection either intratumour or intravenous causes infection in the tumours, resulting in reduction of tumour size and growth.
