Filter by:Background: Culture can affect the way a person thinks about illness. This can affect how they seek help for illness. It can also affect how they choose a treatment and follow it. This can lead to health disparities among certain groups of people. Breast and colon cancers are the most common cancers for Latinos. Even though they get these cancers at lower rates than other population groups, Latinos are more likely to be diagnosed with these cancers at advanced stages. Researchers want to study what Latina women immigrants believe causes breast and colon cancer and other factors they think play a role in disease. This understanding could lead to better interactions between Latinos and their doctors. Objective: To learn more about what Latina immigrants believe causes breast and colon cancer and other factors they think play a role in disease. Eligibility: Women ages 18 and older who: Were born in Latin America Speak Spanish Have never had breast, ovarian, or colon cancer Design: Participants will be interviewed in person or over the phone. This will take up to an hour. The interview will be recorded. Participants will answer questions about: Their family s cancer history What they think causes breast and colon cancer What they think plays a role in disease ...
Surgical resection has offered the best option for prolonged survival in patients with colorectal liver metastases. Limiting factor for major liver resections is the size of the future liver remnant (FLR). In case of normal liver function, 30% of the total liver volume is considered to be sufficient to maintain adequate liver function after resection. In an attempt to further increase "resectability" criteria for patients with too small FLR surgical and interventional maneuvers such as portal vein embolization and portal vein ligation in two-stage hepatectomies have been implemented, but they need an interval of 4-8 weeks to achieve sufficient hypertrophy. In order to obtain adequate but rapid parenchymal hypertrophy a new surgical two-step technique, ALPPS, was introduced for oncological patients requiring extended hepatic resection with limited functional reserve. Both procedures can be performed with acceptable morbidity and mortality. The investigators conclude that it is time to perform a randomized study comparing the two surgical approaches in regard to oncological outcome.
Intestinal anastomosis plays an important role in various general surgeries, but the complications such as anastomotic leakage, stenosis and hemorrhage cannot been avoided. Although many ways are put up to solve this problem, there are still many imports need to improve. Therefore, the Biodegradable Stenting Anastomoses(BSA), which make intestinal anastomosis easily and less complications, have been produced. The major goal of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of Biodegradable Stenting Anastomoses(BSA) for reconstruction in surgery of intestinal anastomosis.
Efficacy of colonoscopy, colon capsule and fecal immunological test for colorectal cancer screening, in first degree relatives of patients with colorectal neoplasia: a prospective randomized study.
The purpose of the study is to investigate phospholipid ligands and their receptors in inflammatory bowel diseases and colon cancer. Several new species of lipids have been recently discovered which are able to transmit information to cancer cells in the large intestine. The lipids and their responsive receptors build an axis that is thought to influence the development of inflammation and cancer.
This is a study whose focus is on understanding the clinical utility of rectal ultrastructure in detecting colonic neoplasm. The method uses Low-coherence Enhanced Backscattering Spectroscopy (LEBS).
This clinical trial studies the use of the financial impact assessment tool in patients with colorectal cancer that has spread from the primary site to other places in the body. Gathering information about patients with colorectal cancer over time may help doctors better understand the financial impact of cancer and help patients avoid financial problems during treatment.
The purpose of this study is to test a method for analyzing interactions between patients and doctors, the Roter Interaction Analysis System (RIAS). The RIAS measures the quality of communication between patients and their cancer doctors.
Linked color imaging (LCI) and magnifying blue laser imaging (BLI) are two new imaging systems used in endoscopy which are recently developed. BLI was developed to compensate for the limitations of NBI. BLI shows a bright image of the digestive mucosa, enabling the detailed visualization of both the microstructure and microvasculature. However, BLI still is not able to obtain sufficient brightness for distant lesions. The newly developed LCI system (FUJIFILM Co.) creates clear and bright endoscopic images by using short-wavelength narrow-band laser light combined with white laser light on the basis of BLI technology. LCI makes red areas appear redder and white areas appear whiter. Thus, it is easier to recognize a slight difference in color of the mucosa. This is a study to determine if using LCI of the colon, rather than the usual white light on the colon, will improve the detection of flat adenomas and serrated polyps. The polyps are called serrated because of their appearance under the microscope after they have been removed. They tend to be located up high in the colon, far away from the rectum. They have been definitely shown to be a type of precancerous polyp and it is possible that using LCI will make it easier to see them, as they can be quite difficult to see with standard white light. LCI/BLI enables endoscopists to accurately describe the pit pattern of adenomas. By comparing White Light Endoscopy and LCI/BLI, it will show if there is any comparable advantage to using one or the other for lesion detection and assessment.
The purpose of this study is to test the safety and find the response rate of combining the dietary supplement, curcumin, with the standard of care, FDA-approved chemotherapy drug 5-fluorouracil (5FU, Adracil) and see what effects (good and bad) that the combined treatments have on colon cancer.
