Patients Experiences of Early Postoperative Cognition

The study has a mixed-methods design i.e. integration of qualitative and quantitative data within a single investigation. Participants included will be patients ≥60 years that are undergoing major elective joint replacement surgery (n=40) and their relative. Patient's experience of his/her cognition will be capture by interviews on postoperative day 13-16 during the follow-up visit and after 1 year. A relative will also be interviewed once on postoperative day 13-16. Cognitive function will be measured preoperatively and on postoperative day 13-16 using the International Study Group of Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction (ISPOCD) test battery. Symptoms / discomfort will be measured pre- and postoperatively (on postoperative day 1 and 2 and at the follow up visit day 13-16) by the Swedish version of Quality of Recovery (SwQoR) and by a visual analogue scale assessing pain intensity. Biomarkers will also be collected at the same time points. The findings from the interviews will be sorted out depending on group stratification (no delayed neurocognitive recovery and delayed neurocognitive recovery). The qualitative and quantitative findings will be compared to seek for similarities and differences.

Health and Energy Through Active Living Every Day After Cancer Intervention for Cancer Survivors

The purpose of the Health and Energy through Active Living Every Day (HEALED) intervention, is to examine the effect of a web-based intervention on changes in device-measured physical activity (light and moderate-to-vigorous intensity aerobic) and sedentary behavior. The purpose of this study is intended for survivors of a cancer with a 5-year survival (at Stage I, II, and III) of at least 45% that has a strong level of evidence for association with physical inactivity according to the 2018 PA Guidelines Advisory Committee Report (breast, colon, endometrium, kidney, bladder, multiple myeloma). In line with social cognitive theory behavior change techniques, participants will be provided information and skills necessary to be more physically active and less sedentary after a cancer diagnosis. New materials will be disseminated biweekly through a website open only to participants, and include at-home exercise demonstration videos, research news, discussion boards, success stories, infographics for exercise recommendations, etc.

Engage for Late-Life Depression and Comorbid Executive Dysfunction

Although there are an increasing number of mental health treatment adaptations for older adults, there are still a number of factors to consider when making these adaptations. Cognitive decline is one such factor that places significant burden on older adults and can interfere with traditional mental health therapies. Engage is a behavioral treatment approach that has shown to be effective in treating late life depression. The investigators are testing the feasibility of Engage as a treatment method for late life depression in older adults with cognitive decline. The objective is to corroborate Engage as an alternative late life depression treatment method for a sub-population of older adults with cognitive decline. Cognitive decline poses a unique mental health treatment barrier that is often over looked in younger populations. With a relatively higher prevalence of cognitive decline in older adulthood, it is imperative that a feasible mental health treatment program that can be effective in the presence of cognitive decline.

The present longitudinal study aims to investigate the impact of lurasidone treatment in recent-onset psychosis patients. The effects of lurasidone will be studied primarily in terms of structural and myelin modifications, in relation to clinical outcomes, before and after treatment and in healthy controls. Furthermore, neuropsychological tests will be used to evaluate changes in cognitive performance.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Prodromal Alzheimer´s Disease With Cerebrovascular Disease

Alzheimer´s disease is a devastating illness that effects the patients as well as their family members. Its prevalence increases exponentially and the burden on the healthcare system is enormous. AD neuropathology begins 15-20 years before the occurrence of cognitive symptoms, which ranges from preclinical stage to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia. Prodromal AD is an early stage of the disease which is characterized by positive biomarkers and MCI. To this day, there is no medication that can cure or halt the progression of the disease and most studies focus on finding reversible risk factors and changing their influence. Several aetiologies have been proposed, like the deposition of amyloid and tau proteins, neuroinflammation and cerebral ischemia due to cerebrovascular factors. The Amyloid deposition, which serves as the biological marker of AD, was originally thought to be the main cause of the disease, however, recent data suggests that it is not the cause and that it might actually has a protective role. On the other hand, it is known today that vascular changes with related tissue ischemia and neuroinflammation have a crucial role in the development of AD in many patients. These pathologies, ischemia & neuroinflammation, can be improved by the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). The goal of this study is to explore the potential beneficial effect of HBOT on prodromal AD.

The Canadian Therapeutic Platform Trial for Multidomain Interventions to Prevent Dementia (CAN-THUMBS UP, or CTU) is a comprehensive and innovative program aimed to develop, implement and evaluate an interactive and compelling online educational Brain Health Support Program (BHSP) intervention, called Brain Health PRO (BHPro), with potential to positively influence dementia literacy, lifestyle risk factors, and scale-up to reach the broader Canadian public; enroll and retain a community-dwelling Platform Trial Cohort (PTC) of individuals at risk of dementia; and support an open platform trial to test a variety of multidomain interventions that might further benefit individuals at risk of dementia.

The Effect of SGLT2 Inhibitors on Cognitive Functions and BDNF Levels in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

Cognitive impairment is a common complication in diabetes for various reasons. Although glycemic control improves cognitive impairment, different antidiabetic medications' effects on cognitive functions are still being investigated. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neuroinflammatory marker and a member of the neurotrophin family with growth factor properties. BDNF levels have been shown to decrease in mild cognitive dysfunction or in late-onset Alzheimer's disease. Our aim is to examine the effect of SGLT2 inhibitor use on cognitive functions and BDNF levels.
