Filter by:Individuals with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of developing cognitive dysfunction followed by dementia in late life. Obesity, physical inactivity and "systemic low-grade inflammation" are strong risk factors and play a crucial role in this network of diseases. Brain-derived Neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is produced in brain as well as several tissues outside brain eg muscle cells. Low BDNF are associated with cognitive dysfuction, obesity and type 2 diabetes. The investigators include 200 individuals divided into three groups: 80 individuals with type 2 diabetes, 80 age and BMI-matched controls and 40 individuals with impaired glucose tolerance. The project will test the hypothesis, that low systemic BDNF are associated with accumulation of abdominal fat, cognitive dysfunction and insulin resistence with different effect in men and women.
This study will be an observational study in which patients who have been prescribed CerefolinNAC® are invited to participate in surveys regarding their experiences with CerefolinNAC®. CerefolinNAC® is a medical food indicated for the distinct nutritional requirements of individuals under treatment for early memory loss with particular emphasis for those individuals diagnosed with or at risk for neurovascular oxidative stress and/or hyperhomocysteinemia; mild to moderate cognitive impairment with or without vitamin B12 deficiency, vascular dementia or Alzheimer's disease. The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of the role of CerefolinNAC® in managing proper neuronal function in the brain, provide patients with personalized education and support, and contribute to the overall understanding of the needs and concerns of patients being treated for early memory loss.
A common complaint among people with Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is "brain fog" or difficulty concentrating. This is very poorly understood. To better understand this cognitive dysfunction, the investigators will test people with POTS and people without POTS using various neuropsychiatric instruments. The investigators hypothesis is that people with POTS will have greater abnormalities on neuropsychiatric testing than normal controls.
To date, there are no approved treatments for vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) and the main therapeutic efforts are aimed at controlling vascular risk factors for countering VCI development or progression. Several studies have reported cholinergic deficits in brain and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with VCI. The effect of choline alphoscerate in clinical studies of Alzheimer's disease and VCI improved memory and attention impairments. The purpose of our study is to determine effectiveness of choline alphoscerate vs placebo in improving cognition in post-stroke patients with VCI-non dementia (VCI-ND).
The purpose of this study is to determine whether pediatric anesthesia is associated with long-term hippocampal dysfunction
- There will be a significant difference in cognitive function between cognitive intervention group (group therapy) and a wait list control group. - There will be a significant difference in cognitive function between a home-based cognitive intervention group and a wait list control group.
In the cross sectional study "Adelahyde 1" which took place between 2001 and 2005, the investigators data suggest that vascular alterations may play a role in the setting of subjective memory complaints. This longitudinal study (Adelahyde 2) aims to confirm the role of vascular factors in the evolution of cognitive function and dementia.
The current project proposes the comparison of two pharmacologic strategies as adjunctive treatments for the improvement of HIV-associated neurocognitive disruption, additionally to use of HAART. The investigators propose the use of the compound that has shown greatest benefits in this context to date, the lithium, versus the use of a well-tolerated and promising drug in other pathologies with neurocognitive affectation, such as Alzheimer or Parkinson diseases, which is the rivastigmine. In those other diseases, this second compound has recently offered a good tolerability, but also benefits on attention, memory and other neurocognitive areas. Both study groups, patients on therapy with lithium and patients on therapy with rivastigmine, will be compared to a control group, which will not initiate any other treatment (therefore only continuing antiretroviral therapy). The investigators are aware that this proposal will offer new relevant data for the study of neurocognitive improvement in HIV infection, as well will allow a better knowledge of clinical management of HIV-infected patients with CNS disease, an aspect that is a common clinical concern today.
This study will look at the impact of dosing as well as ongoing treatment with an investigation medication identified as PF-03654746, on cognitive and physiologic indicators of brain function. Data from this study will assist with the evaluation of the utility of functional magnetic resonance imaging, arterial spin labeling (ASL), and electrophysiologic measures in the detection of early signals of the effectiveness of medications developed to target cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Safety and tolerability of PF-03654746 in this population will be also be evaluated.
Projections from epidemiological studies suggest that, among the Western adult population, one in three will present a cerebrovascular accident (stroke), severe cognitive disorders, or both. To better diagnose the Vascular Cognitive Impairment, new standards were developed by a North America working group which are under validation. It is essential to adapt these standard for French-speaking population, and especially to define cutoff scores of the cognitive battery to determine cognitive deficit. The investigators propose a study coordinated by the University-Hospital of Amiens for french speaking centers. This study will investigate this battery with 906 controls to define the standards and 302 stroke affected patients to define the frequency and cognitive mechanisms. This step is essential for people to benefit from these new standards.
