The response rate to interferon-based anti-viral therapy for chronic hepatitis C is lower in patients who are obese. However, it is not clear whether this is related to suboptimal dosing of the medication or alterated response in obese patients. Alterated immune response had been reported in obese patients. The goal of current study is to determine the immune response to interferon in obese compared to non-obese chronic hepatitis C in an tissue culture system.

Tolerability of Peginterferon Plus Ribavirin for Chronic Hepatitis C and HIV for Patients Receiving Antiretroviral Medication vs Not Receiving Antiretroviral Medication

The main purpose of this study is to compare the safety, effectiveness and tolerability of using Pegasys with Copegus in people who have both the hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 and HIV who continue taking HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy) to those who discontinue taking HAART. Canadian guidelines recommend that both HIV and HCV should not be treated at the same time as the medications needed to treat these two diseases may interact and that which disease to treat first is dependent on the CD4 count. In this study, the CD4 count must be over 350 cells and one must be stable on HAART before starting the study medication Pegasys in combination with Copegus.

Methacetin Breath Test in HCV Patients With Normal and Near-Normal ALT

A relatively large proportion of patients with chronic HCV infection have normal or mildly elevated ALT. Many of these patients are not being treated, and are not being sent for a liver biopsy. The present study will determine the ability of Methcetin BreathID Test(MBIT) to detect those patients who will be candidates for anti-viral treatment, as an alternative measure for liver biopsy in decision-making prior to treatment in clinical hepatology.

Safety, Tolerability and Efficacy of XTL 2125 in HCV-Infected Patients Who Are Interferon-Alpha Non-Responders or Relapsers

The study will be a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, dose rising study in Interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) non-responder HCV infected patients or HCV patients who have relapsed following IFN-alpha therapy. Eligible subjects must have compensated liver disease and serum HCV RNA concentrations above 100,000 IU/mL at screening. The study will include both a single dose period for the evaluation of acute toxicity and single dose pharmacokinetics and a consecutive multi-dose period for the determination of longer-term safety, multiple-dose pharmacokinetics and antiviral activity. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and antiviral activity of escalating single and multiple doses of XTL 2125 in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection and to assess the single- and multiple-dose pharmacokinetics of XTL 2125
