Effects of Systematic Proprioceptive-tactile Stimulation With Use of the Protac MyFit®

Children with sensory impairment (SPD) are often unable to sit still and focus their attention. This can affect the children by limiting their opportunities for participation in school activities. Previous studies indicate a link between childhood SPD, childhood anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adulthood. Research and clinical experience suggest that systematic use of proprioceptive-tactile stimulant aids may have a positive effect for children with SPD. The aim of the project is to investigate and describe the effects of a systematic use of proprioceptive-tactile stimulating vest, MyFit®, for children 6-12 years with SPD in the form of sensory-seeking behaviour. Research questions: - Can systematic use of MyFit® for children with sensory seeking behaviour increase their participation in school activities? - Can systematic use of MyFit® support children with sensory seeking behaviour to increase their awareness, concentration and focus on tasks? - Can systematic use of MyFit® affect children's feelings of confidence and self-efficacy? The project seeks to answer these questions to contribute to knowledge on how children with sensory seeking behaviours can be supported for better participation in school activities. The study will be a randomized controlled trial of 240 children with SPD and sensory seeking behaviour.

Lysine Metabolic Availability in Children

This study will evaluate how much of the essential amino acid lysine school-aged children are using for protein synthesis when consuming different cereal grains. Six healthy children between 6-10y will be recruited. They will be given cooked white rice, corn, oats, black beans, and milk. Using a minimally invasive technique, the amount of lysine that is available from cereal grain products will be determined. With the results from this research project accurate diet recommendations will be developed for children consuming cereal-based diets.

Effects of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus on Children

Abstract Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) refers to different degrees of glucose intolerance or impaired glucose tolerance,which are commonly found on non-diabetic persons during pregnancy.GDM is an important public health issue that has a huge impact on children's health.According to statistics,the global occurrence of GDM in 2017 was as high as 16.2%.As well as lifestyle changes that are leading to an increased number of women with overweightness and obesity,the increasing number of"older mothers"responding to the second-child policy are raising up the percentile of GDM by the year.infancy and pre-school age are the important stages of physical growth and psychomotor development.At present,there are few domestic and International studies on the impact of GDM on the health of children,and the conclusions are not the same.There is a lack of long-term follow-up and Chinese samples. This study focuses on the current new hotspot in the research of the children's health problems, based on the 1000-day life concept and theory of DOHaD. Prospective cohort study methods and real-world studies were used. To study and clarify the effect of GDM on the neuropsychological development and physical growth indicators of children in China, and further explore the possible mechanism of action and the related indicators of predictive value, looking for possible early intervention targets. The results are expected to expand the data sources of this type of research in China, improve the data quality and clarify the characteristics of this type of population in China, and provide data support for the revision of maternal and child health related policies.

Preoperative anxiety is frequently experienced by children undergoing anaesthesia and surgery and being separated from parents during the operation. It is associated with a significant number of adverse outcomes such as maladaptive behavioural changes and increased postoperative analgesic requirements. Pharmacological interventions such as midazolam are widely used to decrease preoperative anxiety in children. However, premedication may be associated with undesirable effects such as paradoxical reactions, prolonged sedation and adverse behavioural changes.The aim of this study is to develop and use a serious game, HospiAvontuur, which can be used during the preparation of children for an admission at the hospital. By using this game the researchers aim to reduce the usage of pharmacological interventions and to increase the use of non-pharmacological interventions, such as HospiAvontuur.

Renal Oxygen Saturation and Its Association With Acute Renal Injury

Peri-operative renal dysfunction is a major mortality and morbidity cause following cardiac and major vascular surgery. Although several intra-operative strategies are proposed for better outcomes, no effective and fast resulting test is available to be done in operating rooms to assess renal functions. Urine and blood markers as serum creatinine, urine output, fractional excretion of sodium and urea are used for early diagnosis of acute renal injury. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) assesses tissue oxygenation especially cerebral regional oxygen saturation. The benefit of NIRS followups of cerebral and somatic (liver, kidney, mesentery) oxygenation in pediatric cardiovascular surgery patients are demonstrated by studies.

Branched Chain Amino Acids Ratio in Medical Foods

This study will evaluate the branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) ratio in the medical foods formulated for Methylmalonic and Propionic Acidemias (MMA/PROP) patients. We will recruit 6 healthy children between 6-10y (3 boys and 3 girls). They will be given amino acid-based shakes and protein free cookies. Using a minimally invasive stable isotope based technique, we will be able to determine the optimal ratio of BCAA to be added in the medical foods for the MMA/PROP subjects.

Population Pharmacokinetics of Antibiotics in Critically Ill Children (POPSICLE)

Infections are common on the Intensive Care for both adult and pediatric patients. Adequately dosing antibiotic treatment is of vital importance but both under- and overdosing is frequent due to pathophysiological changes during critical illness. Moreover, the interplay of age and critical illness is even more understudied. To optimize antibiotic dosing and outcome of infectious disease, personalized dosing guidelines in critically ill patients are highly needed. In this prospective observational population pharmacokinetic study we will evaluate if target attainment for antibiotics is reached in critically ill children with current dosing guidelines. Using these data, individualized dosing guidelines will be developed.
