Filter by:Finding new ways to diagnose and treat Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) could improve the health and well-being of patients with this condition. The main aim of this research study is to help develop better ways of diagnosing and treating patients with DCM. The information that is collected may help develop tailored treatments for patients with this disease in the future. This research study will recruit patients with DCM from a number of centres across England and follow their health over a period of years. Patients will give some blood samples for a type of genetic test called whole genome sequencing (WGS) to look for genetic changes. Patients will also have a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of their heart to look for any changes in the heart such as scarring, and check their heart function. The aim of this study is to discover if using WGS and MRI can improve the diagnosis of DCM. Another aim of the study is to look at how genetic changes and scarring in the heart may affect the progress of the disease. Studying patients with DCM may also help the investigators learn more about diagnosing and treating other diseases of the heart. The second aim of this study is to see whether using WGS and MRI scanning can also be useful in other types of heart diseases which might be affected by genetic changes or scarring in the heart.
Cardiovascular disease increases the risk of depression and vice versa. Many cardiovascular patients are subjected to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Potential biomarkers for the development, the course and the recovery of both diseases are in the focus of interest of many studies. One of the biomarkers that stands out is brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDFN). BDNF plays a significant role in regulating vascular growth and repair but also stimulates the survival, differentiation, and conservation of neurons. The aim of the study is to detect the depression in patients undergoing PCI and to determine the impact of psychiatric treatment on the functional recovery and on the changes of BDNF.

This clinical study evaluates the safety and efficacy of the treatment with the CoolLoop® cryoablation System (sclerotherapy of muscle tissue of the heart by freezing) in patients with atrial fibrillation (permanent atrial fibrillation excepted) over a follow-up period of 36 months. A further aim of this study is to evaluate the average duration of procedure and fluoroscopy times.
Greater advances are needed in two separate but related areas in healthcare: 1) the Clinical Decision Support Systems that complement the EHR use in support of routine patient care, population management and disease management; and 2) the use of the point-of-care observational data from the provider-patient encounter that support realworld medical research and healthcare quality measure assessment. Real-world evaluations of treatments of chronic diseases in the context of comorbid conditions and special populations (minorities, women, mentally ill, and those with addiction) are limited. The purpose of the OPERA database is to help address this unmet need in clinical research.
The study will investigate whether a new high resolution heart Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan, combining assessment of ischemia and viability by perfusion and Late Gadolinium Enhancement -Cardiac Magnetic Resonance is superior to Late Gadolinium Enhacement imaging alone in predicting functional recovery following revascularisation.
This study aims to find out whether people with chronic kidney disease [CKD] should take low dose aspirin to reduce the risk of first heart attack or stroke (cardiovascular disease [CVD]). CKD is common and is associated with an increased risk of CVD. CVD is caused by small blood clots and aspirin thins the blood to reduce the risk of such clots developing but it also increases the risk of bleeding. Aspirin is recommended to prevent further CVD in people who have already had a first CVD event (so called secondary prevention). Here the investigators want to study the use of aspirin as primary prevention in people with CKD who have not had a CVD to prevent the first event, to assess whether the potential benefits exceed the risks. Eligible patients will be recruited from their United Kingdom (UK) general practices and allocated by chance to be prescribed once daily low dose aspirin or usual care only. Follow-up will be for several years both electronically (for general practice, hospital and mortality data) and by annual questionnaires to ascertain CVD and bleeding events.
The overall goal is to identify trends and longitudinal associations in psychosocial, food-related, and cardiometabolic risk factors that can guide public health priorities and future research needs aimed at reducing cardiovascular-related disparities in Puerto Rico. To this end, investigators will establish 'PROSPECT: Puerto Rico Observational Study of Psychosocial, Environmental, and Chronic disease Trends', an island-wide, longitudinal population cohort of 2,000 adults (30-75 years) in PR recruited with a community-wide sampling strategy, and assessed in a network of several partner clinics across the island. The study will collect comprehensive data on multiple psychosocial, dietary, and food-related factors, CVD biological markers, and medical record data, with follow-up at 2-years, and will assess variations by urban-rural area and by timing before-after Maria.

This multicenter, prospective cohort study evaluates early cardiac dysfunction in adult survivors of childhood cancer. The hypothesis of this study is that cardiac dysfunction can be detected earlier when using speckle tracking echocardiography as novel echocardiographic technique compared to conventional echocardiography.
