Aqueous Release to Treat IOP Spikes Post-cataract Surgery

Intraocular pressure (IOP) rise after cataract surgery is an important and common problem. Over 300,000 cataract operations are done per year in the United Kingdom alone. IOP rise can adversely affect vision and can be particularly detrimental in glaucoma patients with pre-existing visual field defects. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of aqueous humor release (also known as burping of the wound), a procedure that has been used for decades to quickly reduce acute IOP spikes following cataract surgery. Currently there is no published evidence on a standard technique to perform wound burping. Similarly there is uncertainty around the amount and duration of the IOP decrease, and the type and frequency of complications eventually associated. This will be the first research project formally evaluating this procedure. This study will also help allay issues over fluid release in high IOPs and consequences of such dramatic IOP drop which concerns ophthalmologists who do not routinely use this technique.

The Link Between Periodontitis, Smoking and Oral Cancer

Periodontitis is a widely prevalent disease worldwide that has serious public health consequences. Its prognosis includes tooth loss and edentulism, a condition that negatively affects chewing causing functional disability; and esthetics causing social impairment. Consequently, periodontitis may end up causing marked impairment of the quality of life of the affected patients, impairment of general health and increasing the dental care costs significantly. Changes in the oral mucosa arise by primary products resulting from tissue breakdown due to gingivitis. It then triggers the host cells to produce proteinases that mediate loss of marginal periodontal ligaments, apical migration of the junctional epithelium and apical spread of bacterial biofilm. Therefore, this research aims to identify the risk of smoking to both periodontitis and oral cancer, and the risk of periodontitis to oral cancer.

The prevention of oral illnesses in children and adolescents undergoing oncological treatment is critical, because oral lesions caused by this therapy significantly exacerbate the clinical condition and increase the risk of infection, as well as making it harder to perform required dental procedures when needed . "The key to success in maintaining a healthy oral cavity during therapy is patient compliance. The child and the parents should be educated regarding the possible acute side effects." Pediatric cancer patients may have a lower quality of life if they have poor dental health. Preventing and treating pre-existing oral illnesses is critical to reduce problems in these people. It is critical to raise awareness of the benefits of proper oral health so that this understanding becomes a positive attitude, reducing the discomfort of these children. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends pediatric oncology/hematology that Pediatric dentists must be involved in the treatment process from the moment cancer is diagnosed. This should be carried out by having a preventive and dental care plan developed based on the patient's needs before any cancer treatment is initiated. The aim of the study is primarily to report oral complications and manifestations during chemotherapy treatment in pediatric cancer patients and raise the awareness of their parents on these manifestations thus proper interventions can be carried out to prevent more serious problems.

Effect of Herring Oil Concentrate on LDL Cholesterol Concentration in Adults

High cholesterol concentration is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), and consumption of fish has been associated with a lower CVD risk in several studies. The beneficial health effects of consuming fish have traditionally been ascribed to the long-chain PUFA (LC-PUFA) EPA (C20:5n-3) and DHA (C22:6n-3), although consumption of fish oils or concentrates with high EPA and DHA contents does not affect the cholesterol concentration in humans and lowers the cholesterol concentration in rats and mice only when given in very high doses. Fish oils contain a plethora of fatty acids besides EPA and DHA, and in recent years, increased focus has been on the long-chain MUFA (LC-MUFA) cetoleic acid (C22:1n-11). Cetoleic acid is found in high amounts in oils from certain fish species such as herring, which has relatively low contents of both EPA and DHA. The investigators have recently summarised and meta-analysed the available literature that investigates the effects of diets containing fish oils or fish oil concentrates that have a high content of cetoleic acid but low or no content of EPA and DHA on cholesterol concentration in rodents, showing that cetoleic acid-rich fish oils and concentrates prevent high cholesterol concentration.

The purpose of this research study is to observe the patient's clinical care and how EYLEA® HD is used as a treatment in real-world settings. Patients are asked to join the study because they have either neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD/wet age-related macular degeneration [AMD]) or diabetic macular edema (DME). Patients cannot have used EYLEA® HD in the past and the doctor must be planning to treat nAMD or DME with a new prescription of EYLEA® HD (aflibercept 8 mg).

A Metacognitive Group Therapy of Depression and Anxiety in Youth With Autism

The goal of this open clinical trial is to try out and evaluate a group metacognitive treatment protocol, for adolescents aged 15-18 years of age with anxiety and/or depression and an autism diagnosis. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. How does the recruitment to the study work and what is the retention rate? 2. What is the level of participant compliance? 3. Is the treatment adherence satisfactory, are there any practical problems with treatment delivery? 4. Are the outcome measures and assessment procedures feasible? 5. Do the participants accept the treatment, are there any reports of adverse effects? 6. What are the preliminary effects of the treatment regarding 1. Symptoms of anxiety and/or depression 2. Quality of life 3. Functional impairment 4. Subjective level of stress 5. Central metacognitive processes 7. Are changes in metacognitive processes related to changes in anxiety and depression? The participants will partake in metacognitive group treatment of 10 sessions following an initial screening.

Semaglutide in Auto-HSCT

The primary objective of this clinical trial is to ievaluate the effect of semaglutide (GLP-1 receptor agonist) in reducing intensity of gastrointestinal (GI) mucositis in patients undergoing high-dosage chemotherapy followed by autologous (auto) haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The secondary objective is to evaluate the effect and safety of semaglutide in reducing gut barrier injury and systemic inflammation in patients undergoing auto-HSCT. Study design: The study is designed as a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2, two-centre investigator-initiated clinical study. Patients referred for treatment with high-dose chemotherapy and auto-HSCT will be randomized in a 1:1 manner to receive either semaglutide or placebo. The study includes a run-in period 3 to 4-week low-dose period with semaglutide subcutaneously (s.c.) 0.25 mg once-weekly (QW) prior to high-dose chemotherapy treatment followed by a period of 4 to 5 weeks with semaglutide 0.5 mg QW. Total duration of treatment with investigational drug will be 8 weeks. Total study duration for the individual patients will be 20-22 weeks, including a 2-4-week screening period and 10 weeks of follow-up. Study population: A planned total number of 40 patients will be randomized.
