Effectiveness of Taping on Anastomotic Regions in Patients With Breast Cancer-Related Lymphoedema

One of the most common conservative treatments of lymphoedema is Complex Decongestive Physiotherapy (CDP). The bandage is one of the most important components of the treatment process. The multilayer short-stretch bandage is used to maintain volume reduction and prevent lymph backflow caused by compression. However, some patients refuse or postpone treatment or show a lower compliance with compression bandaging.Kinesio® Tex tape (KT) is a new technique for managing lymphoedema in the field of physical and alternative therapy, and it may affect decongestion of lymphatic fluid accumulated under the skin. Some studies which showed that KT was an effective for patients with BCRL, it was applied on both the affected arm and anastomosis. One of these studies also reported that a significant reduction in limb volume in patients who were applied of the tape only to the affected arm. This significant effect could also be seen by applying KT only to the anastomosis. In literature, however, there is no evidence to support this theory. So the aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of KT which was applied to anastomotic regions along with CDP in the management of BCRL.

People treated for breast cancer often live with an ongoing fear that the cancer will recur. This fear may develop and impact on their mental health and quality of life. The Mini-AFTERc study is a pilot trial of a brief cognitive behavioural communication intervention, designed to reduce fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) in breast cancer patients. This pilot trial aims to determine the acceptability and practicality of introducing the Mini-AFTERc intervention into everyday practice, and inform the development of a full randomised controlled trial.

Tissue Acquisition and Genomics Analysis of Breast Cancer and Other Gynecologic Malignancies

Background: A person s blood, tissue, and other samples contain DNA. Cancer is a disease of cells that are not working properly. It is caused by changes in DNA that build up. Researchers want to do future studies on DNA changes This may help them learn how to guide treatment for cancer. They need biological samples like tumors, blood, and urine for these studies. Objective: To create a place to collect and store biological samples from people with gynecologic malignancies like breast cancer. Samples from certain relatives of theirs will be collected too. Eligibility: Adults ages 18 and older who are being seen at NIH for breast cancer or other gynecologic malignancy Their biological relatives of the same age Design: Participants will answer questions about their family history. Participants will have a physical exam and medical history. This will include questions about age, ethnicity, and disease history. They will also answer questions about their medical treatments and responses. Participants will give blood and urine samples. Participants may give a tumor tissue sample. This will not be taken specifically for this study. It will be from a previous procedure or one that is already planned. Other samples may be taken only if a procedure is required for treatment. These include bone marrow, cerebrospinal fluid, and other fluids. A group of doctors and other professionals will oversee the sample storage place. The group will review all requests to be sure the use of the specimens is valid.

Trends of Mastectomy and Breast-Conserving Surgery in Female Breast Cancer Patients

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women across the world, accounting for 25.2% of cancer cases among females and 14.7% of cancer-related deaths among females worldwide. The survival rates are markedly lower in the developing countries compared to developed countries, as well as the age at diagnosis. Core management of breast cancer includes surgical removal of the tumor either by breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or mastectomy (removal of the whole breast). Choosing between these two procedures may be influenced by factors that have yet to be studied in Saudi Arabia. The investigators aimed to determine the prevalence of BCS and mastectomy and the factors that may influence the choice of procedure. This retrospective study was carried out by reviewing the records of female breast cancer patients who underwent BCS or mastectomy at King Abdulaziz University Hospital between 2009 to June 2017, excluding those with metastasis (distant spread of the cancer) or recurrence. Using frequencies for the rate, and multivariate tests, the investigators analyzed different demographic, clinicopathological, and radiological factors to detect correlations with procedure choice.

New Therapeutic Approach in Upper Limb Lymphedema Secondary to Breast Cancer: Activity-oriented Proprioceptive Antiedema Therapy (TAPA)

This study evaluates the effectiveness of an experimental proposal therapy for upper limb lymphedema secondary to breast called Activity-oriented proprioceptive antiedema therapy (TAPA) facing the consensual gold standard treatment, the complete decongestive therapy. TAPA consists in: - Health education / patient empowerment. - Neurodynamic activities oriented to Activities of Daily Living (ADL). - Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation exercises oriented to ADL. - Self-adherent self-adhesive antiedema of low compression. Half of patients will receive TAPA treatment while the other half will receive CDT standard treatment.
