The Southampton Women's Survey was established to assess the influence of factors operating before conception and during pregnancy on the health and development of the offspring. 12,583 non-pregnant young women were recruited, and 3,158 were followed through pregnancy, with their offspring followed-up at 6 months and 1, 2, 3, 4, 6-7, 8-9 and 12-13 years. The 17-19 year follow-up has been piloted and is about to start.

Romosozumab in Women With Chronic SCI

This two-year open-label pilot clinical trial will evaluate the efficacy and safety of romosozumab to treat bone loss in females with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) and osteoporosis (OP). Participants will receive monthly injections of romosozumab during the first 12 months of the study. During the second year, participants will take oral alendronate tablets on a weekly basis.

Healthy Bones, Healthy Life: Habitual Physical Activity on Bone & Metabolic Health in Pediatric Cancer Survivors

This project will examine habitual physical activity, bone health, and insulin resistance in pediatric acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and lymphoma cancer survivors at two time points: baseline and 6 months. At the two study timepoints, all study participants will be asked to wear an accelerometer, receive a DXA scan of the lumbar spine and hip, and have blood drawn for analysis. Study participants will be given a gift card stipend for each study visit attended. Study visits will coincide with regular office visits to Children's Hospital Oncology Clinic and the Children's Hospital Survivorship Clinics whenever possible. The potential mechanism by which physical activity mediates bone changes will be explored by concurrently measuring changes in lean/fat mass and metabolic status. This pilot study will provide data to inform the design of a randomized controlled trial to test the effect of a physical activity intervention on bone health in PCS.

The objective of this study is to compare two surgical techniques for the treatment of the maxillary and mandibular bone atrophies.. Therefore, the main purpose is to compare the (i) the percentage of post-operative complications (ii) the three-dimensional bone gain with customized titanium meshes (test group - the medical device is digitally designed and made with customized laser sintering modality, customized to the defect of each patient) and with titanium-reinforced PTFE mesh (control group - the medical device is cut, shaped, and manually modelled to the patient's defect by the operator himself.

Socket Preservation for Dental Implant Site Development.

Changes in alveolar bone following teeth extraction can compromise implant placement. Socket preservation (alveolar ridge preservation) is considered as a surgical procedure employed to preserve the ridge volume within the envelope existing at the time of extraction.The ultimate aim of such procedure is to compensate the expected amount of horizontal and vertical alveolar bone resorption. In order to better understand which socket preservation materials might be more effective for ridge preservation and to strengthen the evidence that is relevant to the clinicians' choice of socket preservation materials, two different materials were compared in a randomized controlled approach. (1) Demineralized Bone Matrix (DBM) Putty and Putty with Chips allograft covered by collagen membrane, and (2) Deprotonated bovine bone xenograft covered by collagen membrane. The independent variable is the grafting material while the dependent variables are the change in socket height, and width; the ability of implant placement without the need for grafting and the success rate of implants at the time of loading.
