Filter by:Obesity is a major risk factor for disease and a public health problem. Recent information suggests that while it is possible for most overweight adults to lose a substantial amount of weight, maintaining the weight loss for any extended time (2 to 3 years) is very difficult. This is because trying to maintain big changes in exercise and/or eating behaviour is very difficult in today's environment that makes sustain big changes in behaviour (Example: eat allot less or exercise allot more) very hard. In fact at this time health professionals are unsure of how best to help overweight adults maintain big behavioral changes for long periods of time. In response, we propose that making smaller changes in eating and exercise habits every day may be possible in today's environment and if so, small weight changes may be possible to maintain for long periods of time. This study is designed to assess whether making small changes in eating and exercise behavior will be associated with sustained weight loss over three (3) years. The results of the study may have important implications for development of public health messages and clinical guidelines for prevention and treatment of obesity through small changes in both exercise and eating habits.
The aim of the current study is to demonstrate that a commercial weight management diet (i.e. low energy density) influences satiation, hunger and satiety and leads to lower energy intake during ad-libitum meals and over a full day. We further seek to demonstrate the sustainability of this effect following 12- week weight loss on the weight management program. - We hypothesise that formulated (low energy) meals will lead to decreased hunger, greater fullness and reduced desire to eat compared to standard meals. - We hypothesise that the commercial weight management program will lead to greater weight loss compared to control program. - We hypothesise that formulated meals (high consumer acceptance) will improve hedonic control over eating (lower wanting for high fat food) - We hypothesise that the commercial weight management program will improve hedonic control over eating (reduced experience food cravings)
The purpose of this study is to conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial, to determine whether providing financial incentives for meeting daily step goals (a) increases the daily step counts of participants, (b) increases compliance with the overall program (including diet recommendations), and (c) increases weight loss.
Background: Lipid lowering response to weight loss in subjects with genetic hyperlipidemias and overweight or obesity and its effect on cholesterol metabolism has not been studied. Objective: To explore the effects of weight loss on lipid values and cholesterol metabolism, by measuring circulating non-cholesterol sterols, in overweight or obese subjects with genetic hypercholesterolemias. Design: The investigators conducted a 6-months weight loss intervention in subjects with the diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) or familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCHL), body mass index >25 kg/m2, steady weight (±3 kg in the last 3 months) and absence of lipid lowering drugs in the previous 5 weeks. They were advised to follow a hypocaloric diet with a deficit of 600 kcal (30% fat, 15% protein, and 55% carbohydrates) per day as calculated from the person's resting energy expenditure and activity level. Anthropometric data, biochemical analysis including lipids, apolipoproteins and non-cholesterol sterols were evaluated at baseline, 3 months and 6 months.
There is growing evidence that exercise-based rehabilitation results in improvements in mobility and participation in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the vast majority of the scientific evidence in support of this view is based on persons with MS who have minimal mobility impairment. This is partially due to the lack of accessible exercise equipment and facilities available to persons with severe mobility limitations. One option available to persons with severe mobility limitations is body weight supported treadmill training. Indeed, this rehabilitation approach has been utilized with some success in various clinical populations, such as stroke and spinal cord injury, and is believed to target neuroplasticity. Specific to persons with MS, body weight supported treadmill training has shown great promise in improving quality of life, symptoms and functional mobility in two small (n=4 and n=6) pilot investigations. However, previous research has been hampered by methodological limitations including small sample size, lack of a control group and limited training sessions. Consequently, no firm conclusion regarding the benefit of body weighted supported treadmill training in persons with MS can be drawn. The proposed project seeks to determine if twenty-weeks of body weight supported treadmill training leads to improvements in physiological function, mobility and quality of life in persons with MS with severe mobility limitations. The outcomes of this project have the potential to lead to new rehabilitation approaches capable of improving function and quality of life in persons with advanced MS.
The authors hypothesize that adjusted individual feeding (AIF) for preterm infant starting from transition to oral feeding (33 weeks corrected age) will result in less episodes of apnea/bradycardia, early achievement of full oral feeding, improved weight gain and shorten hospitalization duration in the short term. In the long term AIF will result in higher scores on the Griffith's developmental scales, decreasing parental anxiety and feeding disorders .
Scant data have been reported on the effects of weight self-monitoring during weight control. The purpose of this pilot project was to consider the questions: Is it possible to assign participants to engage in daily weight self-monitoring, and are there differential effects on mood of daily versus weekly weighing?

Background: - We are studying people s psychological experiences and how these relate to the way people respond have when they see information communicated in different ways. We are testing multiple research questions in this research. Objectives: - To learn about how to design future research studies. Also to learn about how to best give people information about health topics. Eligibility: - Women with a Body Mass Index of 25 or higher. Design: - Before the study visit, participants will answer some questions online about themselves, their experiences, and their thoughts about their weight. - During the study visit, participants will watch a short scene from a movie, and then answer questions about it. - Participants will have a simulated doctor visit with a computerized, virtual reality doctor. They will answer more questions about themselves, their experiences, and their thoughts about their weight. Then they will answer questions with researchers.
