NCT ID: NCT06238609 Recruiting - Muscle Weakness Clinical Trials

Neuromodulation for Prevention of Intensive Care Unit Acquired Weakness and Post Intensive Care Syndrome

Start date: August 28, 2023
Phase: Phase 1
Study type: Interventional

Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) encompasses persistent physical, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms following ICU discharge, commonly triggered by serious conditions such as respiratory failure, sepsis, and mechanical ventilation. PICS prevalence is reported to be as high as 84% up to 12 months in patients with at least 2 days spent in the ICU or with mechanical ventilatory support. As a consequence, many patients do not return to they former level of function for weeks, months and even years. Muscular affection manifested by muscle weakness is particularly seen and is provoked by a combination of damage to the nerves or directly the muscles fibers. This affection is referred to as CU-Acquired Weakness (ICUAW). One third of the time, lower extremities are affected, often due to prolonged immobilization or sedation. Evidence suggests that early mobilization reduces the incidence of ICUAW at discharge and improves the number of patients able of stand. However achieving this early intervention is not always feasible due to time or personnel constraints. The purpose of the study is to examine the effectiveness of lower extremity neuromodulation for prevention of muscle deconditioning in patients admitted to the ICU.

NCT ID: NCT06192992 Recruiting - Blood Flow Clinical Trials

Regional Blood Flow During Peripheral Heating

Start date: May 31, 2022
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Blood flow through the popliteal, brachial, and carotid arteries during peripheral heating of the feet

NCT ID: NCT06186297 Completed - Oxygen Consumption Clinical Trials

Boosting Performance: The Power of Cranberry Supplementation

Start date: March 1, 2023
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Cranberry is a fruit native to North America that is widely grown in Quebec and has been shown to have the highest antioxidant capacity among the most commonly eaten fruits. Consequently, consuming cranberries prior to exercising may help to improve exercise endurance by preventing accumulation of reactive oxygen species. For aerobic endurance, in order to maintain a certain pace for a long duration, runners need to effectively neutralize reactive oxygen species. Although it is not the only component involved in running, offsetting reactive oxygen species should improve running performance. To test this, we plan to investigate the effects, both acute and chronic, of a cranberry extract on the oxygen consumption in 18-35 year old males and females. The present research project will contribute to expand our knowledge of how cranberry extract can exert a positive effect, and thus improve aerobic performance or even every day life. This project can benefit a wide range of the population, from sedentary individuals and older adults to elite athletes by providing an all-natural supplement alternative.

NCT ID: NCT05399771 Recruiting - Chronic Pain Clinical Trials

Radiofrequency Hyperthermia Safety Study

Start date: June 27, 2022
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

This study will include 20 healthy subjects with intact skin on their lower legs that meet inclusion criteria. Participants will serve as their own control, by heating one leg and not the other. The radiofrequency device consists of a 4 by 6 inch heating pad connected to a temperature controller. Subjects will receive weekly treatments for 4 weeks, and will be re-evaluated 4 weeks after the last treatment to assess any tissue changes that continue after the treatments have concluded.

NCT ID: NCT05391581 Completed - Blood Flow Clinical Trials

The Role of GIP and GLP-2 in Postprandial Splanchnic Blood Flow Distribution and Metabolism

GA-17
Start date: January 13, 2022
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

This project will describe the mechanisms of action and the relative contributions of GIP and GLP-2 to changes in gastrointestinal blood flow induced by oral glucose, exogenous GIP and GLP-2 infusions, and endogenous GIP and GLP-2 with the use of two novel receptor antagonists GIP(3-30)NH2 and GLP-2(3-33) in healthy individuals.

NCT ID: NCT05049278 Completed - Blood Flow Clinical Trials

Effects of Vasopressor on the Graft Blood Flow in TRAM

Start date: September 24, 2021
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The purpose of this pilot study is to investigate whether two major vasopressors (norepinephrine vs. phenylephrine) used for treatment of hypotension during breast reconstruction with free flap transfer surgery have different effects on blood flow of the flap vessel measured by transit time flowmetry. Since there are few prior studies that compared the effects of these two vasopressors on the blood flow of the flap, this study will be conducted in the form of a pilot study in order to establish the evidence for the future randomized controlled trial.

NCT ID: NCT05042349 Withdrawn - Physical Activity Clinical Trials

Pregnant Elite Athletes and Pregnant Women Exercising With Moderate Intensity

Start date: June 1, 2020
Phase:
Study type: Observational

The aim of this study is to 1. register possible changes to uteroplacental circulation in relation to physical tests, 2. to register energy and nutritional intake, relationship towards the body during pregnancy and during the early period after giving birth, 3. register the experience of guidance given related to exercise, nutrition, and recovery, 4. register elite athletes' experience of combining the role of being a mom and an elite athlete, and 5. register attitudes and reactions from the support system when it comes to being an elite athlete and being pregnant. Material and method: 30 pregnant female elite athletes and 30 moderately physically active pregnant women will be recruited for the completion of physical testing and questionnaires and questionnaires only, respectively. 20 national team leaders/coaches and 10 sponsors will be recruited for a semi-structured interview about attitudes, reactions and guidance towards athletes who become pregnant and still wish to continue their career as an athlete after pregnancy.
