Filter by:This study will examine whether extended release galantamine, a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration to reduce cognitive impairments in people with Alzheimer's disease, can perform the same function in stable people with bipolar disorder.
The purpose of this study is to examine whether tobacco smoking is associated with bipolar affective disorder (severity of depressive and manic symptoms, presence of psychotic symptoms, history of a suicide attempts and other clinical features.)
The study will be a multi-center, parallel, group, placebo control, double-blind, randomized controlled trial of lamictal as add-on maintenance treatment in pediatric outpatients (aged 10 to 17 years) diagnosed with Bipolar I disorder. The study consists of 4 phases: Screen (approximately 2 weeks), Open label phase (up to 18 weeks), Randomized phase (up to 36 weeks) and Taper and follow-up phase (up to 4 weeks).
We propose to study the efficacy and tolerability of lamotrigine in the treatment of older adults with bipolar depression and to compare measures of brain energy metabolism between older subjects with bipolar depression and healthy age-matched controls in order to better understand treatment response in geriatric bipolar depression.
We propose to study and compare measures of brain energy metabolism in geriatric bipolar individuals and healthy older adults. We would also like to investigate changes in brain energy metabolites and in vivo creatine kinase (CK) enzymatic activity associated with CoQ10 administration in older bipolar individuals.
The primary objective of this 15-week clinical trial is to test the hypothesis that treatment with two proven mitochondrial enhancers, acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) and α-lipoic acid (ALA), has significantly greater efficacy than placebo as an augmentation treatment in bipolar depressed patients who display an incomplete response to conventional treatments.
Women with a close relative who has experienced mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder often have a poor understanding of the causes of the illness, and are often very worried about the chance that any children that they have will become affected with the same illness. Often, because of this fear, these healthy women choose not to have children. Genetic counseling is a process where information about the causes of illnesses, and about chances for family members of individuals with these illnesses to become similarly affected is provided in a supportive environment by a specially trained healthcare professional. This study will investigate whether genetic counseling can reduce perceptions of risk and stigma, and increase perceived control and knowledge about the causes of the illness, amongst women who have a first degree relative with a major mental illness.

This is a pilot project to study if repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) will benefit patients with bipolar depression safely. Based on published studies, this study hypothesizes that rTMS on the left dorsal prefrontal lobe will improve symptoms in some patients who have failed at least two medications.
