Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Lovaza) for Second Generation Antipsychotic-Associated Hypertriglyceridemia

This is an open-label pilot study of omega-3 fatty acids (Lovaza) for hypertriglyceridemia in subjects who have been on an atypical (second-generation) antipsychotic medication. The investigators hypotheses are that patients who receive Lovaza will experience a significant decrease in triglycerides from baseline. Secondary hypotheses include: Patients will experience a significant decrease in total cholesterol, and Lovaza will be well tolerated.

Varenicline in Bipolar Depressed Patients

Patients with bipolar disorder have one of the highest rates of nicotine dependence and one of the lowest quit rates. Varenicline has been shown in previous trials to be effective for smoking cessation, but has not been studied in subjects with bipolar disorder. This 12-week open label trial will be conducted to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and safety of varenicline in bipolar depressed smokers, given in addition to the subject's primary treatment for bipolar disorder. The primary study hypothesis was that the abstinence rate for bipolar depressed patients will be 50%.

Determination of Absorption and Elimination of Lamotrigine-XR

People over 65 years of ag break down (metabolize) drugs differently than younger adults. It is not known why this happens or how elderly people absorb or break down these drug differently. These difference may show that elderly individuals need lower doses of medications to avoid possible toxicity. We are interested in studying how yor body absorbs and breaks down your lamotrigine medication. This research may indicate that doses of lamotrigine should be lowered as people get older.
