Century Trial, a Randomized Lifestyle Modification Study for Management of Stable Coronary Artery Disease

The Century Trial is a single center Phase III randomized study sponsored by the Albert Weatherhead III Foundation and conducted by Dr. K. Lance Gould. The study hypothesis is that a combined image-treatment regimen of PET + comprehensive program of lifestyle modification and lipid lowering drugs to target lipid level will result in an improved cardiovascular risk score when compared to current standard optimal medical therapy, potentially resulting in a lower rate of death, non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI) and revascularization procedures during long term follow-up when compared with current standard of care. If our hypothesis is correct, we will not only improve our ability to prevent and treat CAD but we will also illustrate that, even with the expenses of behavioral interventions and imaging techniques, we can be very cost effective. This information may help patients at risk or with known CAD to obtain insurance coverage to prevent the disease as well as providing a more effective way of treating it.

The Effect of Dates on Plasma Lipids, Oxidative Stress and the Atherogenicity of Serum in Healthy Adults

It has been proven in in-vitro studies that dates decrease the oxidative stress in serum. There have been no in-vivo studies to this date. The current study aims to test whether dates consumption by healthy adults decreases serum oxidative stress and improves serum PON1 activity and serum lipid profile.

Neutrophil Gelatinase-associated Lipocalin Concentration in Coronary Artery Disease

Serum NGAL has been described as a biomarker of neutrophil activation and an inflammatory marker which correlates to obesity and its metabolic complications. Since neutrophil activation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease, the investigators hypothesized that serum NGAL levels would be higher in patients with CAD and that serum concentration would correlate with the extent of CAD as documented by coronary angiography, serving as a potential biomarker of the severity of CAD.

Dietary Phytosterols and Human Aortic Valve

This randomized controlled double-blind intervention study unravels influence of dietary plant sterols and stanols on the structure and the sterol composition of the human aortic valve. The study patients will include 50-60 voluntary patients from the Helsinki Univ. Central Hospital, who will undergo aortic valve surgery. The patients will be randomized into plant sterol (E), plant stanol (A) and control (C) groups. Patients in the E and A groups will be asked to consume daily 2 grams plant sterols or plant stanols, respectively, in a margarine product.
