Filter by:Older adults with serious illness and their caregivers have high rates of anxiety and limited access to effective, non-pharmacological treatments. A recent National Academy of Medicine report recommended increased emphasis on disseminating and implementing evidence-based psychotherapies in order to have maximal public health impact. Through this work, I will identify a sustainable and potentially scalable dyadic intervention and delivery model to manage symptoms of anxiety in older adults with serious illness and their caregivers in primary care.
Project ASSET will explore the preliminary efficacy of interpersonal therapy, when compared with cognitive behavioral therapy, for reducing anxiety symptoms, preventing excess weight gain, and reducing cardio-metabolic risk in adolescent girls with above-average weight and elevated anxiety. As a pilot for a larger multi-site study, this trial will also test multi-site feasibility, acceptability, and intervention fidelity.
This project will pilot a tailored Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) intervention delivered via telehealth videoconferencing (Tele-CBT) to reduce anxiety in people living with cognitive impairment. A process evaluation will inform its feasibility and implementation in the community nation-wide.
The aim is to assess the effectiveness of online group CBT for reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety among university students. The investigators will conduct a four-arm randomised control trial comparing a 10-session online group CBT intervention to three mental health apps (namely SilverCloud guided, SilverCloud unguided, and Mood Flow).
Regular exercise during pregnancy and postpartum leads to health benefits for mother and child. Inactivity during pregnancy and after delivery is now treated as risky behavior. Physically active pregnant women significantly less often suffer from, among others, gestational diabetes, excessive weight gain, lipids disorders, hypertension, preeclampsia, depressive symptoms, functional and structural disorders, including stress urinary incontinence, back pain or diastasis recti abdominis (DRA). Prenatal physical activity reduces the risk of premature delivery and miscarriage, fetal macrosomia, complications in labor or the risk of metabolic disorders in children. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has become one of the most popular trends in the fitness sector. The effectiveness of HIIT on a number of health indicators has been proven in various populations but limited data are available on HIIT during pregnancy. The first hypothesis is that the HIIT, implemented during pregnancy and after childbirth, as a stronger exercise stimulus, will have a better impact on selected biological and psychological parameters of mothers, as well as on selected health parameters of their children, compared to the MICT (moderate intensity continuous training). Therefore, it promises better preventive effects on pregnancy complications and ailments as well as non-communicable diseases occurring in these populations. In the second hypothesis, it was assumed that HIIT and MICT implemented during pregnancy and after childbirth, tailored to the specific needs of the perinatal period, will not differ in the effectiveness of maintaining normal functional parameters in women, including prevention of urinary incontinence, back pain, DRA, etc. Pregnant women who apply for the study will be divided into three groups: those attending the HIIT, MICT or educational programs. During the study, the participants will be under standard obstetric care. As comparative groups, non-pregnant women will be also recruited. The investigators will collect data on selected biological, functional and psychological parameters in the study women at each trimester of pregnancy, during the puerperium and one year after childbirth. The data from the medical documentation on the course of childbirth and the assessment of the new-born, as well as the results of preventive examinations in the study women's children aged one, two, four and six years will be also analyzed.
The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a parenting intervention+usual care compared to usual care on postpartum depression and other mental health and parenting outcomes, as well as the feasibility and acceptability of the parenting intervention.
Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been known for almost forty years to generate fear and anxiety. Children may become restless during scanning, which results in movement artifacts requiring the MRI to be repeated with sedation. Very few studies seemed to have looked at the effect of virtual reality (VR) on anxiety in children scheduled for an MRI and how to identify which children are more responsive. Objective: The aims of this study are three-fold: 1- to develop an algorithm of predictability based on biofeedback; 2- to address feasibility and acceptability of a pre-procedural immersive VR (IVR) game preparation for anxiety management during MRIs and 3- to examine the efficacy of IVR game preparation compared to usual care for the management of procedural anxiety during MRIs. Methods: This study will first consist of a field test phase with 10 participants, aged 7 to 17 years old, to develop a predictive algorithm for biofeedback solution and to address the feasibility and acceptability of the research. Following the field test, a RCT will be completed using a parallel design with two groups: 1) experimental group (pre-procedural IVR game preparation), 2) usual care group (standard care as per radiology department's protocol) in an equal ratio of 49 participants per group for a total of 98 participants. Recruitment will be done at CIUSSS de l'Est de l'Île de Montréal, Quebec, Canada. The experimental group will receive a pre-procedural IVR game preparation (IMAGINE) that offers an immersive simulation of the MRI. Participants will complete a questionnaire to assess the acceptability, feasibility and incidence of side effects related to the intervention and the biofeedback device. Data collected will include socio-demographic, clinical characteristics and measures of procedure related-anxiety with the French-Canadian version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC-F) and the Child Fear Scale (CFS, 0-4). Physiological signs will be noted and include heart rate, skin conductance, hand temperature and muscle tension. Measures of healthcare professionals, parents, and participants' level of satisfaction will also be collected. Analyses will be carried out according to the intention-to-treat principle, with a significance level (α) of 0.05. Conclusions: Our study provides an alternative method for anxiety management to better prepare patients for an awake MRI. The biofeedback will help predict which children are more responsive to this type of intervention. This study will guide future medical practice by providing evidence-based knowledge on a non-pharmacological therapeutic modality for anxiety management in children scheduled for an MRI.
This study, which has a randomized controlled experimental design, was planned to determine the effect of music therapy on the anxiety level of family health personnel working in primary health care centers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study will be carried out between 4 August and 31 December with nurses, midwives and other family health personnel working in family health centers. Participants will be randomized into two groups, a control and an intervention group. Individuals in the intervention group will receive 15 minutes of music therapy once a day for 5 days. No intervention will be made in the control group. Data Descriptive Question and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory online design; It will be collected on the Google Forms platform.. Data analysis will be done using SPSS 20 program.
The treatment of depression, anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a main public health problem due to the frequency of these pathologies and the very partial effectiveness of the existent therapies. These illnesses generally require the prescription of several successive lines of antidepressant treatments before the treatments actually become effective, leading to a several week delay during which the patient suffers from the symptoms of his/her pathology and is also likely to experience the side effects of the treatment. Pharmacogenetics is an individualized prescribing modality that aims to predict the most favorable treatment for a given individual based on the study of genetic variants of cytochromes. The main hypothesis of this research is that the use of pharmacogenetics in routine practice in a population of military personnel requiring a first prescription of an antidepressant is of interest to improve the tolerance and effectiveness of the treatment.
This research is aimed at investigating the efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) psychotherapy for treating depression and comorbid anxiety symptoms. EMDR has been scientifically established as an evidenced based level-A treatment for PTSD. However, researchers have started assessing its efficacy for depression and other psychological disorders. Preliminary evidence indicates that EMDR has the potential to treat depression, however, it has not yet been established as an evidence-based intervention. Anxiety most often comorbid with depression. literature suggests that when depression is treated, the comorbid anxiety symptoms are also reduced. Hence, the effect of EMDR therapy on anxiety symptoms, when treating depressive symptoms would also be explored. A sample of 40 volunteers will be sought from community through advertising, and through referrals and will be randomly assigned to experimental and control conditions. Participants of experimental condition will be offered eight phase EMDR therapy in a period of 12-14 weeks. Participants of control group will receive counselling as usual sessions for 12-14 weeks. Measurement of the depression and anxiety symptoms for Experimental group will be recorded at Time 1, (baseline, time frame: 0 week). Time 2 (after history and preparation for EMDR, time frame: 3 weeks). Time 3, (after EMDR treatment, time frame: 12 weeks) and at T4, ( post treatment follow-up, Time frame: 24 weeks. For Control group, measurements will be recorded at T1, T2 and T3. The current study will be the first registered Randomized Control Trial (RCT ) as per investigators knowledge, that will explore the efficacy of EMDR in treating depression and comorbid anxiety. The results of the study will provide the scientific bases to use EMDR as a treatment of choice for depression and anxiety. Many clients do not respond to pharmacological as well other psychological treatments despite bearing huge financial cost. EMDR therapy can be a short-term treatment that may provide relief from symptoms of depression and anxiety, and as a result, the functioning and quality of life of the participants will also improve. This study will also guide further research to explore the effects of EMDR on other trauma-based disorders and comorbid conditions.
