Anesthesia for Upper Endoscopy and Colonoscopy in Cardiac Patients With Acute Anemia

The aim of this study was to try to reduce the required dose of etomidate used in anesthesia for upper endoscopy and colonoscopy in critically ill cardiac patients who complain of severe anemia in cardiac intensive care units by using a low dose of ketamine, which helps to reduce the side effects of etomidate, the most important of which is its suppressive effect on the adrenal gland and the secretion of cortisol in such critical cases, while maintaining hemodynamic stability, and the patient's satisfaction.

Meals to Improve Absorption of Iron Supplements

One of the targeted objectives of Healthy People 2020 is to reduce iron deficiency among women of reproductive age (WRA). Consuming foods rich in iron and/or oral iron supplementation is typically recommended to improve iron status; however, global rates of iron deficiency remain high. Thus, nutritional strategies to improve/maintain iron status are warranted. Dietary iron is found in two different forms: heme and non-heme iron. Non-heme iron is found in plant-based sources and is commonly used as a supplement and food fortificant. Absorption of non-heme iron is low compared to heme iron, which is found in animal sources, such as beef. Studies have also demonstrated that beef contains an unidentified factor that stimulates the absorption of non-heme iron. The primary objective of the proposed study is to determine the effects of incorporating daily meals containing beef or plant-based alternative with or without an iron supplement on indicators of iron status in iron-deficient WRA.

Depleted Donor Stem Cell Transplant in Children and Adults With Fanconi Anemia After Being Conditioned With a Regimen Containing Briquilimab

The objective of this clinical trial is to develop a cell therapy for Fanconi Anemia which enables enhanced donor hematopoietic and immune reconstitution with decreased toxicity by transplanting depleted stem cells from a donor after using an experimental antibody treatment called JSP-191 as a part of conditioning. This experimental treatment will hopefully cause fewer side effects than chemotherapy (the current standard of care method). Participants will be administered the conditioning regimen, are assessed until they receive the depleted stem cell infusion, and will be followed for up to 2 years after the cell infusion.

Detection of Anemizations in Primary Care.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of the use of the hemoglobinometer in primary care on the clinical results of patients with chronic anemia. Methods: The ANHEMOG study is a randomized controlled trial with two parallel arms, intervention and control. It was approved at december 11, 2017. The study randomizes 138 patients with chronic anemia. In the intervention arm, a monthly capillary hemoglobin measurement will be performed with a hemoglobinometer. If a decrease in hemoglobin concentration is detected, an existing transfusion circuit will be followed. Social, demographic and quality of life variables will be collected from all participants. Hypothesis: The results of the research will have an impact on people with chronic anemia who would receive red blood cell transfusion when needed without delay. The improvement in the times of action would reduce decompensations from chronic diseases, visits to the emergency room and hospital admissions, and therefore would improve the quality of life of these patients. Furthermore, the management of the different interventions by the Case Management Nurse (EGC), in this regard, improves the current fragmentation of the different levels of care.

An Efficacy and Safety Study of Luspatercept (ACE-536) Versus Placebo in Subjects With Myeloproliferative Neoplasm-Associated Myelofibrosis on Concomitant JAK2 Inhibitor Therapy and Who Require Red Blood Cell Transfusions

The purpose of this Phase 3 study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Luspatercept compared with placebo in subjects with myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN)-associated Myelofibrosis (MF) and anemia on concomitant Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) inhibitor therapy and who require red blood cell count (RBC) transfusions. The study is divided into Screening Period, a Treatment Phase (consisting of a Blinded Core Treatment Period, a Day 169 Response Assessment, a Blinded Extension Treatment Period, and an Open-label Extension Treatment Period), and a Posttreatment Follow-up Period. Following the Day 169 Response Assessment, subjects who did not show clinical benefit will have the option to unblind. Subjects who were on placebo during the Blinded Core Treatment Period will have the opportunity to crossover into the Open-Label Extension Treatment Period and receive Luspatercept.

Iron Deficiency Anemia and Non-iron Deficiency Anemia in Pregnancy in India

This is a sub-study nested into the existing NICHD Global Network for Women's & Children's Health Research Maternal Newborn Health (MNH) registry that is a prospective, observational population-based registry in Eastern Maharashtra, India. This study will assess the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and non-iron deficiency anemia (NIDA) in Eastern Maharashtra and will assess the association between both conditions and neo-natal and infant health outcomes (birth weight, gestational age at birth, weight-for-gestational-age z-score and infant hemoglobin concentration at 6 weeks). The investigators will also assess the relative strength of the association between anemia in the 1st trimester and 3rd trimester (after iron needs have increased but mothers may have been taking iron folic acid (IFA) supplements for several months) and infant health outcomes.

Physical Rehabilitation in Sickle Cell Anemia

Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is one of the most neglected diseases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. In the adult population with SCA, the systemic effects of the disease, such as respiratory and peripheral muscle dysfunction, cause a decrease in quality of life. As a consequence, there is a concern about functional rehabilitation, since the aging of this population is already a reality in our environment. Thus, the objective of this project is to evaluate the effects of functional rehabilitation on quality of life in adult patients over 18 years of SCA. In this longitudinal intervention study, patients will be submitted to a three-month rehabilitation program. Before and after the intervention, patients will be submitted to the following assessments: spirometry; quality of life questionnaire - Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36); functional scale of joint integrity - Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS); fatigue assessment scale - Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F); physical activity assessment questionnaire - International Physical Activity Questionaire (IPAQ); peripheral muscle assessment (handgrip and isometric dynamometry of the quadriceps muscle); and 6-minute walk test (6MWT). The protocol will consist of warm-up and cool-down exercises, muscle strengthening and endurance exercises, aerobic training, balance training and proprioception. Thus, it is expected that patients with sickle cell anemia will benefit significantly, with a consequent improvement in musculoskeletal function, pain and health-related quality of life.
