Filter by:In France, alcohol consumption is the second most common cause of so-called preventable cancers after tobacco. Since 2014, in the "Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur" (PACA) region, the association Santé! has been developing an innovative intervention to support people suffering from alcohol-related addiction. This intervention, called IACA! must therefore be evaluated on a larger scale before conclusions about its effectiveness can be drawn from a comparative trial. This evaluation requires significant human and material resources. It is therefore recommended to first assess the transferability of IACA! in other care centers in a pilot study.
This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) as a treatment for Veterans with an alcohol use disorder (AUD).
This study aims to validate W-SUDs as a digitally-delivered substance use disorder program through a fully-powered randomized control trial that will test the comparative efficacy of the mobile-app based substance use disorder program (W-SUDs) to reduce substance use relative to a psychoeducation control condition, which has no cognitive behavioral therapy and the content is not delivered through a conversational user interface.
Self-medication of pain with alcohol is a common, yet risky, behavior. Evidence suggests family history of alcoholism may affect the degree to which alcohol use relieves pain, but the independent contributions of expectation and conditioning have not been previously studied. Interactive effects of sex and family history are also currently unclear. This project addresses this gap in knowledge and will inform further research and clinical/translational efforts for reducing risk associated with these behaviors.
This study will explore the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a smart phone delivered form of cognitive training intervention (Approach Bias Modification (ABM)) in a non-clinical community sample of middle to older adults (>55 years) reporting hazardous alcohol use in a pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT). A couples-based alcohol-reduction and economic and relationship-strengthening intervention for HIV-affected couples in Malawi.
Background: Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a complex psychiatric disorder, involving several brain areas and neurocircuits. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) allows to stimulate superficial areas of brain using a weak electrical current. Preliminary data suggest that tDCS may reduce alcohol craving and consumption. Objectives: The main outcome is to test if tDCS can reduce alcohol craving and use and to assess the changes in BDNF and pro-BDNF levels. Secondary outcomes are the assessment of other psychiatric dimensions (mood, behavioral and cognitive alterations) associated with prolonged alcohol use. Eligibility: Healthy, right-handed adults ages 18-65 who do have AUD (moderate to severe). Design: This is a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study with three phases: 1) a tDCS intensive treatment phase; 2) follow-up with weekly tDCS stimulation; 3) follow-up without tDCS stimulation. Participants will be screened with: - Psychometric Scales - Medical history - Physical exam - Urine tests and breathalyzer - After being enrolled, baseline behavioral and laboratory data will be collected. In particular, participants will undergo: - Psychometric Scales - Venous blood sample (BDNF/proBDNF levels) Participants will be randomized to real or sham tDCS arm. The stimulation will be delivered daily for five days during the first week (intensive treatment phase) and then weekly for 3 months (follow-up with stimulation). During this period patient will be tested with a behavioral and psychometric evaluation.Therefore, participants will receive 3 follow-up monthly visits without tDCS stimulation, in which behavioral and psychometric data will be collected. Treatment includes: - tDCS: The tDCS will be delivered with a stimulator connected to two sponge electrodes, soaked in a saline solution. The stimulation will be administered at a current intensity of approximately 1 mA, for the duration of 20 minutes. The anode will be placed on the right DLPFC, the cathode on the contralateral cortical area. - BDNF/proBDNF levels: A venous blood sample will be collected before the first stimulation and after the last stimulation of the intensive-stimulation period (first week). The blood sample will be centrifuged within 20 minutes of sampling at 1000 × g for 15 minutes. Then, the serum will be aliquoted and stored at -80 ° C until analysis. - Repeat of screening tests and questionnaires - Urine toxicological screen and breathalyzer
A pilot trial among ship-board US Navy personnel surrounding a holiday weekend tested an evidence-based video on responsible drinking. Service members >18 years were eligible to volunteer if they were aboard during data collection. Participants were randomized to intervention or control arms, with all given a brief survey before (T1) and after (T2) the weekend. The intervention arm viewed a 3-minute video at T1. A urine specimen collected at T1 and T2 for ethyl glucuronide (EtG) measurement used >100ng/ml for significant alcohol use. Multivariable regression measured odds of detecting EtG at T2, controlling for T1 EtG detectability, age, and alcohol misuse at baseline per AUDIT-C. 86 subjects participated at T1, and 100 at T2, with complete data for 72 (control, n=34; intervention, n=38) who participated in both T1 and T2 were analyzed. Average age was 28 years with 25% and 32% reporting white or black/African-American, 54% married and 84% <E6. At T1, 22% (n=16) and T2, 32% (n=23) had EtG>100ng/ml. At T1, 50% and 55% in control and intervention arms respectively, screened positive for alcohol misuse by AUDIT-C; T1 AUDIT-C screen positivity was significantly associated with detecting EtG>100ng/ml at T1 (p=0.04). Control arm EtG>100ng/ml participants increased 1.7-fold over the weekend, from n=7 at T1 to n=12 at T2; the intervention arm had no increase in EtG>100ng/ml participants, with n=11 at T1 and n=11 at T2.
Alcohol consumption is the second cause of avoidable death after tobacco. The Evin law was constructed in 1991 with the aim of reducing exposure to alcohol marketing among the youngest. But this law is currently extremely weakened, and in a press release of February 26, 2018, the French Alcohol Society is alarmed by these developments. Studies on the impact of alcohol marketing focus for the most part on young adolescents and the links between marketing exposure and alcohol initiation. But beyond these links, little work has been done on the impact of alcohol marketing on vulnerable subjects with regular alcohol consumption. Alcohol consumption is one of the very first causes of hospitalization in France. The damage is often limited to the notion of risks of dependence, but it can appear as soon as consumption of 1 standard unit/day and mainly concerns the 45-64 year olds. To our knowledge, there are no studies on the impact of alcohol marketing carried out among regular alcohol users with moderate or severe alcohol use disorders. This population is, however, the target of manufacturers, since 10% of the French population consumes 58% of the alcohol sold in France. Moreover, although in the context of tobacco, counter-marketing campaigns and strategies are used to help users develop resistance to the positive marketing stimuli of alcohol, there are no studies that have evaluated this type of intervention with patients with moderate to severe alcohol use disorders. The DEPREV_phase 3 study is a prospective, controlled, randomised, open-label study. Patients followed in the primary care network participating in the study and those followed in the addictology network of northern Finistère in the context of their pathology will be offered the opportunity to participate in the study. Patients agreeing to participate will be randomized in 2 groups (1:1) by the addictology unit: - Control group: routine routine follow-up (follow-up in consultations with the attending physician or addictologist) + assessments at Month 1, Month 3 and Month 6. - Intervention group: Routine routine follow-up (follow-up in consultation with the attending physician or addictologist) + assessments at Month 1, Month 3 and Month 6 + motivational interview (2 individual sessions, during the first month after inclusion). Patients will then be followed up and evaluated at 1, 3 and 6 months after the inclusion visit.
The lockdown consequent to Coronavirus outbreak has had a differential impact on the drinking behaviour on the general population. The impact is unknown on the people with underlying chronic liver disease related to alcohol as some of them may have complex psychosocial background. The alcohol consumption in people with Alcohol-related Liver Disease (ArLD) is either due to alcohol dependence or related to their lifestyle. Alcohol dependence is a chronic relapsing remitting condition and this is associated with 60% mortality at 5 years in people who continue drinking. Recovery from alcohol-use disorder (AUD) has been made more difficult during lock-down because peer support meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) have no longer been taking place; a majority of the residential rehabilitation centres have closed or are no longer accepting admissions (PHE, 2020) and the single detoxification unit in London has been requisitioned as a COVID-19 step-down facility. The aim of the study is to understand the influence of lockdown on the craving of alcohol and severity of alcohol dependence in patients with ArLD. The results from the study will enable us to identify the factors influencing the drinking behaviour during lockdown and a subsequent impact on episodes of decompensation and mortality.
