Filter by:Randomized, blinded, No-Treatment control, multi-center, prospective clinical study, to identify whether TEOSYAL RHA® Redensity is more effective than No-Treatment in the correction of moderate to severe dynamic perioral rhytids at Week 8 after last treatment (i.e., initial or touch-up treatment). The Treating Investigator (TI) at screening will evaluate the subject's perioral rhytids severity using the Perioral Rhytids Severity Rating Scale (PR-SRS) for eligibility of the subject for the study. The Blinded Live Evaluator (BLE) at screening will evaluate the subject's perioral rhytids severity using the PR-SRS in order to confirm eligibility and to establish a pre-treatment (Baseline) score for assessment of effectiveness. This is done independently of the TI, and exact concordance between the BLE and the TI is not necessary for eligibility of the subject in this study. Enrolled subjects will be randomized to either the TEOSYAL RHA® Redensity treatment group or the "No-Treatment" control group (ratio 3:1). The TI will administrate the study device, and if necessary, subjects will receive a touch-up treatment 14 days following the initial treatment to optimize the results. The TI will conduct safety and effectiveness evaluations at study visits, which occurred at Week 4, 8, 12, 16, 24, 36, and 52 after the last treatment, (i.e., initial or touch-up treatment) and 4 weeks after a Repeat-Treatment. The Blinded Live Evaluator (BLE) will conduct assessments of effectiveness during the trial, including assessment of the primary endpoint at Week 8 after the last treatment (i.e., initial or touch-up treatment). The BLE will conduct effectiveness evaluations at Week 8, 12, 16, 24, 36, and 52 after the last treatment (i.e., initial or touch-up treatment). All subjects will be followed for 52 weeks after the last treatment (i.e., initial treatment or touch-up), at which point they will be offered Repeat-Treatment (provided that the TI deems the treatment to be appropriate and the subject agrees) and will be then followed for 4 weeks after Repeat-Treatment before exiting the study. If a subject returns to his pre-treatment PR-SRS score at Week 12 or Week 16 or Week 24 or Week 36 after initial treatment or touch up (as assessed by the TI), subjects are eligible for optional Early-Retreatment if necessary at 12 or 16 or 24 or 36 weeks after last treatment (provided that the TI deems the treatment appropriate, and the subject agrees). Subjects will be then followed for an additional 4 weeks after Repeat-Treatment. Subjects who will receive optional Early-Retreatment at Week 12 or Week 16 or Week 24 or Week 36 after the after initial treatment or touch-up, will be offered Repeat-Treatment at Week 52. Subjects randomized to the "No-Treatment" control group will receive their first treatment after the primary endpoint evaluation (Week 8 after randomization) and then will be followed the same schedule as the initial treatment group.
With aging, vascular function (VF) declines. Inactivity and sedentary life style have been shown to contribute to the worsening of VF. Furthermore, bed rest, a condition commonly used for the management of many chronic conditions, has been proven to lead to even more deleterious consequences, including VF decline. This study evaluates the effect of passive mobilization of the lower limbs on VF in bedridden oldest-old. Half of the participants will undergo passive mobilization treatment in addition to standard therapies, while the other half will receive only standard therapies. We hypothesize that passive mobilization may improve nitric oxide (NO)-mediated endothelial function.
This study will determine whether supplementation of probiotic Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG improves psychological status in middle age and older adults through a 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Secondary analyses will be conducted to examine the possible benefits of probiotic supplementation on cognitive function and markers of physical health.
Tendons are essential structures for transmitting muscle forces to skeletal structures. A stiffer tendon will transmit muscle force faster, and then allow faster movement. Moreover, tendons are a living tissue and respond to mechanical forces by changing their metabolism as well as their structural and mechanical properties. The aim of the present study is to answer essential questions remaining unanswered that are necessary in order to optimize physical activity with ageing in humans, and thus improve quality of life in elderly. The main questions are: What is the minimal training intensity leading to tendon adaptations? What is the time-course of tendon adaptations? Does the same loading protocol lead to similar tendon adaptations for different tendons (Achilles vs Patellar) and does the same training program lead to identical tendon adaptations with age (25yrs vs 75yrs)? To answer these questions, tendon architecture and mechanical properties will be investigated in humans of different age and applying different training intensities. The kinematic of the tendon adaptations due to these different training characteristics will also be investigated. The training protocol will be applied on plantar flexors and knee extensors. MRI and ultrasound techniques as well as the use of ankle and knee ergometers will allow the quantification of possible modifications in tendon architecture and mechanical properties (tendon stiffness and Young's Modulus). This will be assessed in vivo, using ultrasound images to assess tendon displacement during an incremental maximal contraction.
Nurses participate to geriatric evaluations for falling patients. For these patients, it is recommended to evaluate,especially, visual acuity but this is not currently done because it is difficult to systematically combine with an ophthalmologic consultation. The HAS french recommendations propose to detect visual acuity deficiency using Monoyer and Parinaud scales, without specifying the professional qualification. According to the nurse competence decree of State Graduates, "sensory disorders" screening is a "non-vulnerable" examination, and can be performed by nurses. Therefore, they can use these scales, after training. We propose to evaluate the correlation between visual acuity scores obtained by nurses in geriatric consultations and an ophthalmologist. This study should include 204 patients over 65 years, who have fallen at least twice in the last 12 months. These patients will benefit from an evaluation by an ophthalmologist, after the geriatric consultation.
This study examines the factors that may drive the relationship between vascular disease and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) in a large, longitudinal, multi-ethnic community-based cohort study of older adults in northern Manhattan, New York. In past research, the investigators demonstrated that accumulation of brain vascular disease is associated with risk for development of AD. The study now extends the research to examine how brain vascular disease and AD interact. In this pilot study, the investigators will obtain positron emission tomography (PET) scans to measure amyloid (one of the protein pathological markers of AD) from participants in an ongoing community-based study of aging and dementia (WHICAP). The study will include subjects who are already enrolled in the parent project. Further, this study will enroll both subjects who have never been evaluated with PET scans and those who received a previous baseline PET scan. The study plans to obtain approximately 30 repeat amyloid PET scans and 20 baseline PET scans. The investigators will also conduct transcranial Doppler studies to measure blood flow in the participants with amyloid PET scans. The potential benefits to society should be considerable if this study reveals new information about risk factors for or contributions to AD.
This study will evaluate the effects of diet composition (i.e., amount of protein and carbohydrate) during a 6-month weight loss intervention and 12-months of follow-up on physical function, muscle mass, and weight loss maintenance in obese older adults. Participants will receive either a protein or carbohydrate supplement along with a behavioral weight loss intervention.
This is a phase 1 study in healthy adult volunteers to examine the effects of 3 FDA approved medications on skin aging when applied in topical form. This is an open label, placebo controlled study.
Approximately 50% of people living with HIV (and as many as 80% over the age of 50) have difficulties with cognitive functions such as memory and thinking that can have a profound negative impact on activities of daily living and quality of life. Problems with memory and thinking are also associated with forgetting to take anti-retroviral drugs and experiencing challenges to balance, walking and mental health (anxiety and depression). There is increasing evidence that, in the general population, exercise has positive effects on cognition, physical functioning and mental health. Despite the recognition of multiple therapeutic benefits of exercise, little attention has been paid to its possible effects on cognition in people living with HIV. The purpose of the proposed pilot study is to compare the effects of a 12-week, randomly assigned, community-based yoga-mindfulness intervention on cognition, balance, walking, mental health and quality of life in 30 people >35 years of age living with HIV in the Halifax area. Yoga is of particular interest because it encompasses not only the physical but also spiritual, emotional, and mental dimensions of life. As such, it has tremendous potential to help stave off some of the devastating consequences of HIV infection.
This study is intended to clarify the benefits to brain health and thinking processes that result from different forms of exercise. In particular, this study will investigate the possible benefits of physical exercise (such as pedaling an under-table stationary elliptical) or mental exercise (such as playing a videogame on a portable tablet), or combining these activities together (as in the iPACES™ exergame).
