Filter by:The aim of this study is to conduct and evaluate a controlled experimental trial aimed at exploring whether, to what extent and how a socially-assistive Pepper robot that operates on a unique CARESSES cultural competence solution can produce better health and well-being related outcomes among older adults residing in long stay care homes (and their informal carers) compared to a control socially-assistive Pepper robot with an alternative CARESSES solution, as well as care as usual.
The objective of the current proposal is to identify 1) how aging-related changes in GABAergic cortical inhibition affect motor performance, and 2) how aerobic exercise may improve inhibitory function and facilitate motor learning.
The purpose of this project is to determine whether restoring the post-prandial metabolic/inflammatory balance via supplementation with raspberries results in improved cognitive performance, and if these enhancements are mediated through improvements in vascular function.
Malnutrition and inappropriate medication prescribing are highly prevalent among acutely admitted older medical patients leading to re-admissions, frailty, poor physical, performance compromised quality of life and mortality. Thus, the aim of this study is to optimise the nutrition and medication in older medical patients admitted to an acute care department at admission and up to 16 weeks after discharge. Participants in the intervention group receives a medication review and participants with malnutrition or risk of malnutrition additionally receive a transitional multimodal intervention. The control group receives standard care.
The investigators aim to determine whether a wrist-worn accelerometer device is able to objectively measure physical activity, and whether it is an acceptable process for high-risk elderly patients prior to planned surgery. Accelerometers measure physical activity in 'counts' of activity, enabling them to record the total amount of activity in a given time period (e.g. number of steps per day), and also the time spent in various levels of intensity of activity. The investigators will ask study participants to wear an accelerometer around their wrist (like a wristwatch) for up to 14 days prior to their surgery. Participants will receive the same care as non-participants. Part of this routine medical care includes a preoperative review by a multidisciplinary team including specific personalised advice to optimise physical activity before surgery. The investigators will measure the impact that this existing intervention has on physical activity levels. Being more physically active is good for our health, and may be associated with a better recovery from surgery. In the future there may be methods of improving physical activity in the period of time before patients' surgery, which may improve their recovery from surgery. In order to study this further, the investigators first need a robust and objective way of measuring physical activity. In current practice patients are asked to estimate how physically active they are on a day-to-day basis. This relies on how well they remember, and how good they are at getting it right and may not be accurate. The wrist-worn accelerometer is an objective method of measuring physical activity in patients, which not only offers greater understanding of the physical activity levels of elderly patients before a variety of operations, but also offers the opportunity to measure the impact of existing and potential future interventions to modify physical activity in the preoperative period.
The proposed study will evaluate the safety, durability and efficacy of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) as a promising non-invasive therapeutic treatment for improving memory in older adults with mild or moderate Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) who have been experiencing residual memory or cognitive problems that affect daily functioning.
There are no unbiased studies that have analyzed the effects of resistance training with traditional, heavy versus light-moderate loads on muscle, tendon and bone in elderly people. The purpose of the present study is to assess the effects on muscle mass and function, tendon and bone of two different training intensities, light-moderate vs. heavy load, in people older than 65 years old. The study will be carried out with a randomized controlled design. Participants will perform single training sessions and a 12-wk dynamic resistance training program on the knee extensors with different training intensities on each leg. One leg will train with heavy loads and the other one will train with light-moderate loads, but matching the load x repetitions performed by the contralateral side.
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of a lower-body strength training regime combined with protein supplementation in pre-frail elderly individuals. Participants are randomized to a group performing three weekly sessions of heavy-load strength training for 10 weeks and receiving daily protein supplementation, or a non-training, non-supplemented control group. The endpoints are changes in body composition, the relative changes in different compartments of the quadriceps femoris muscles, and the relationships between changes in muscle mass, muscle thickness, strength, and functional capacity. The investigators hypothesize that 10 weeks of heavy load strength training and protein supplementation will elicit improvements in muscle mass, strength, and functional performance. Moreover, it is hypothesized that improvements in strength will correlate with the improvements in functional performance.
Analyze patient experience of elders admitted to the Emergency Department Elder Friendly Area (EFA) and determine possible improvement options and potential solutions. The project will use a creative problem-solving methodology (Design Thinking) to analyze the care process based on the experience of Elder Friendly Area (EFA) users and their families
