The Causal Effects of Old Age Pensions

Old age pensions are a common feature of welfare policy worldwide. However, little is known about the effect of these pensions on the recipients and their families. In this study, the investigators will partner with the government of Tamil Nadu, India to study the effects of old age pensions. Households with a member who is likely to be eligible for the pension but not currently receiving it will be assigned to either a treatment or control condition. Those assigned to treatment will receive assistance in applying for the pension. Investigators will track outcomes of the elderly and their family members for several years following the intervention. In addition to the impact of pensions on economic and health outcomes, the study will also explore how pension receipt affects the elderly's ability to cope with the impact of the COVID crisis.

Prediabetes is a substantial problem in India not only because it itself can be associated with morbidities such as coronary artery disease but also because it is a point of important for prevention of diabetes. It is not clear if apparent accelerated aging in Indian population associated with heightened tendency for prediabetes, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis and dys-metabolic state etc. could, besides lifestyle factors, be related to vitamin D deficiency, or ageing-related genes, or interaction between the two. This study is based on the assumption that the supplementation of vitamin d could lead to reversal to normal glucose regulation and may slow aging process in individuals with pre-diabetes.

Dietary Protein and Resistance Exercise in Elderly

The aim of this randomized, observer-blind, controlled intervention study with parallel groups is to study the effect of resistance training (2x/week for 8 weeks) with and without different goals of protein intake on muscle strength, function and mass, oxidative stress parameters and the immune system in community dwelling persons. Participants (n = 137) will be community-dwelling older adults. After a pre-participation screening participants will be distributed randomly but stratified by sex and age to one of the 3 groups (low protein + strength training, high protein + strength training, low protein and no strength training(=control)). Study participants are eligible if they are male or female with an age between 65 and 85 years and if their cognitive status as well as their physical fitness level allows to participate at the strength training sessions. Exclusion criteria comprise chronic diseases which contraindicate the training sessions, serious cardiovascular disease, diabetic retinopathy and manifest osteoporosis, a frailty index at or above 3, medication with anticoagulants or cortisone drugs and also regular strength training during the last six months. Primary outcome measure is the change in the Chair Stand Test. Secondary outcome measures comprise anthropometric data, functional performance tests, immunological and oxidative stress parameters, microbiota, metabolomics, proteomics and the nutritional status.

Effects of Motor Imagery on Motor Learning and Motor Retention in Octogenarian.

Aging is associated with impairments in cognitive function, particularly motor learning and memorizing, impacting functional capacities. Older adults are still able to learn new skills but at a slower rate, and they forget quickly the new-learned skill because of an alteration in motor memory. Motor imagery, which is a mental simulation of an action without actual execution, has been demonstrated to improve performance in young adults and stabilize performance after a short break in older adults. However, in very old adults (>80 years old) for whom the decline in motor and cognitive functions is greater, it is unknown whether motor imagery training during a short break is still efficient. Previous studies on old adults were performed on upper limb muscles. Because aging differentially affects upper and lower limb muscles, the present study will aim to explore the effects of motor imagery on motor memorizing in both upper and lower limb muscles.

The Impact of a Low or High Phosphate Diet on Phosphate and Calcium Excretion in Healthy People

Phosphate is present in many of the foods that the investigators eat and is required by many cellular processes. The kidneys are the only organ that excrete the extra phosphate from the diet that the body does not require. Phosphate is linked to vascular calcification and cardiovascular disease. Measures of serum phosphate do not reflect the burden of phosphate and are not sensitive to early changes in the way the kidneys eliminate phosphate. This study will determine whether the kidneys handle an oral phosphate load differently after 5 days of a low phosphate diet compared to 5 days of a high phosphate diet.

Aging, Aged Garlic, Vascular Function and Muscle Oxygenation

The number of elderly individuals affected by cardiovascular diseases has been increasing in our country. Garlic (Allium sativum) has been associated with decrease of reactive species of oxygen, hypertension, high cholesterol, platelet aggregation, blood coagulation and especially cardiovascular diseases. The present study evaluated the effects of a garlic supplementation on vascular function and blood pressure in the elderly at cardiometabolic risk. Twenty-eight elderly individuals were submitted to an ingestion of four capsules of an aged garlic extract (KYOLIC® Aged Garlic Extractâ„¢). Muscle oxygenation and function were measured 180 min after interventions. Urinary thiosulfate, blood nitrate, nitrite, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and heart rate (HR) were measured at baseline and 180 min after interventions.
