Filter by:In this project, the investigators propose to demonstrate the feasibility of remotely-monitored, caregiver (or spouse)-administered, home-based tDCS intervention to improve mobility in ambulatory older adults with recent falls. This is a three-phase feasibility study in older, ambulatory adult participants at risk of falling due to a loss of balance (participant faller, PF) together with a willing and able participant administrator (PA) that is available during weekdays to administer tDCS (transcranial direct current stimulation) to the PF. Phase 1 is focused on the development and refinement of our training materials for home-based tDCS for PF/PA pairs. The objectives of this phase: 1. Identify areas of confusion and challenges for older adults. 2. Refine our training materials to accompany the home-based tDCS system. In Phase 2, the investigators will complete a pilot trial in 12 PF/PA pairs to assess the feasibility of deploying home-based tDCS in larger clinical trials, and to prepare for the development and implementation of such trials. The objectives of this phase: 1. Determine the mean/range number of visits needed for in-person training. 2. Compliance and retention with the study protocol. 3. Safety/side effects of home-based tDCS, as compared to previously established laboratory-based tDCS data. The investigators hypothesize that adult PAs are able to successfully administer home-based tDCS to PFs. The investigators also expect that PF/PA pairs will exhibit excellent adherence to the intervention and that the prevalence and severity of reported tDCS side-effects will be similar to that observed in previous laboratory-based studies. In Phase 3, the investigators will complete a pilot trial in up to 18 PF/PA pairs; i.e., those who have previously successfully completed either Phase 1 or Phase 2. The study objectives/aims for Phase 3 are: 1. Further explore compliance and retention with the study protocol over a longer time period 2. Identify safety/side effects of home-based tDCS over a longer time-period as compared to previously established laboratory-based tDCS interventions. In Phase 3, the investigators hypothesize that adult PA's who have previously demonstrated the ability to successfully administer tDCS at home, will retain competence and compliance with administration over a longer period, up to 1 year.
The overall objective of this study is to investigate the efficacy of low-intensity blood flow restricted resistance exercise (BFRRE) to promote health beneficial skeletal muscle adaptations and augment muscle function in a healthy older population. This objective will be achieved by in-dept evaluation of skeletal muscle cellular and functional characteristics prior to and after an intervention period comprising 6 weeks of BFRRE or non-exercise control intervention in healthy older subjects. A special focus is placed on the ability of BFRRE to stimulate skeletal muscle protein synthesis and augment muscle stem cell function. Furthermore, recent findings suggests that similar exercise interventions in a population of patients with heart failure (HF) does not stimulate the desired adaptations. In accordance, we aim to compare the adaptive response to BFRRE amongst HF patients and the enrolled age-matched healthy individuals from the present investigation. The findings of the current study will expand our understanding of how low-intensity resistance exercise alternatives might be viable in promoting muscle anabolism to combat the loss of muscle mass observed with ageing as well as the potential anabolic resistance accompanying HF diagnosis.
Stroke is thought to cause disability immediately after stroke followed by a 3-to-6-month recovery period, after which disability levels are supposed to stabilize unless recurrent events occur. However, studies showed that post-stroke recovery is heterogeneous. While some stroke survivors quickly recover, others may show an accelerated accumulation of disability over time. The current prospective observational study will investigate trajectories of multidimensional functioning and self-rated health in the year after stroke. Particularly, the study aims to explore the relationship between trajectories of disability and self-rated health. Moreover, the study will focus on potential predictors of changes in disability and self-rated health, i.e., views on aging and psychological resilience. Patients will be recruited during their stay at the stroke unit and participate in a face-to-face interview and four follow-up telephone interviews in the post-stroke year.
With advancing age, adults experience increasing speech understanding difficulties in challenging situations. Currently, speech-in-noise difficulties are rehabilitated by providing hearing aids. For older normal-hearing adults, however, hearing devices do not provide much benefit since these adults do not have a decreased hearing sensitivity. The goal of the "Speech Perception with High Cognitive Demand" Project is to evaluate the benefit of a new auditory-cognitive training paradigm. In order to provide maximal benefit for older, normal-hearing adults, a validation of the new training materials is required. In a pilot study, the investigators will evaluate the new auditory-cognitive training paradigm in 15 young, normal-hearing adults (18-30 years). Based on these results, the training paradigm can be further optimized for older adults.
This study uses videoconferencing to deliver an evidence-based exercise program, Seated Tai Chi for Arthritis, to adults aging with long-term mobility disabilities. In the 8-week Tele Tai Chi intervention, participants will use a tablet or computer to join a small-group, online class (1hr, twice weekly) from home; during each session, participants will exercise as a group along with the pre-recorded video lessons and have the opportunity for social interaction (via video chat) before and after class. The study will examine the effects of the Tele Tai Chi program on physical activity and social connectedness for adults aging with long-term mobility disabilities, a population likely to experience barriers to exercise participation.
The present study aims to examine the effects of Xbox Kinect exercise training program on the sleep quality, anxiety and functional capacity in older adults. Older adults were randomized into two groups. The XBOX group performed exercise with Xbox Kinect during 60 min, three times/week for 6 weeks. The CONTROL group did not exercise. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to evaluate sleep quality, anxiety symptoms by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the functional capacity was analyzed using following tests: Chair Stand Test, 8-Foot Up and Go Test, and 6-min Walk Test.
Taiwan is already an aging society due to the rapid increase of the aging population. To cope with this situation, it is necessary to make preparations for the care of the elderly. World Health Organization (WHO) proposed aging health strategy in recent years, and the community participation is the most important for the elderly. The courses provided by the community empowering are important to promote the healthy life of the elderly. However, at this stage, there are relatively few courses related to cognitive functions, life-style activities and aging education. It is needed to add more courses related to multi-domain.
After emergency room visits, the elderly patients can increase their dependence and functional decline. In this context the goal of this study is to demonstrate that there are robustness predictive factors after visit to the emergency room.
Aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 6-month ballroom dance (3 times/wk) on physical fitness and reaction time in twenty- four experienced older adults. Body composition, handgrip test, standing long jump test, step test, one-legged stance balance test, and reaction time (RT) test were assessed before and after 6 months (T6) of dance practice. RT was re-evaluated after 4 months (T10).
The investigators are conducting two experimental surveys to explore clinical and psychological factors that influence older adults' willingness to stop medications in the face of polypharmacy.
