Filter by:Individuals of advanced age undergo both physical and cognitive deterioration. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of two types of physical activity on stability parameters.
Study objectives: 1. To compare cardiovascular function in older compared to young healthy adults. 2. To compare the effect of 8 weeks of aerobic interval training vs. continuous moderate exercise on cardiovascular function in healthy older adults. Hypotheses: 1. Compared to young adults, older adults will have lower cardiovascular function. 2. Compared to continuous moderate intensity exercise training, interval training will be more effective in improving cardiovascular function in older adults.
Glutathione is an important antioxidant protein which protects cells from harmful oxidative stress. Elderly humans are known to have elevated oxidative stress and deficiency of glutathione, but it is not known whether there is deficient synthesis of glutathione in muscle tissue of elderly humans. Mitochondria are engines of cells where food consumed is burned to make energy. Under normal conditions the fuel of choice in the fasted state is fat, but fasted elderly humans are not able to oxidize fat as well as healthy young humans. Elderly humans also have the highest incidence and prevalence of being overweight and obese, and have increased storage of fat in liver and muscle. This study will help determine whether 1. elderly humans have diminished synthesis of glutathione in the skeletal muscle, and whether this can be improved by supplementing cysteine and glycine (and not an isonitrogenous placebo) in the diet; 2. improving muscle glutathione concentrations can also improve fuel oxidation in aging; 3. improvement of intracellular glutathione concentrations will be associated with a change in total body fat content
Individuals of advanced age undergo both physical and cognitive deterioration. The aim of this study is to explore the connection between level of physical activity and health parameters, quality of life, and frailty.
The investigators are investigating whether the flax lignan, secoisolariciresinol diglucoside, decreases oxidative stress and inflammation. The flax seed lignan is believed to be broken down in the body to produce the health benefits of flax. Flax lignan is separated from the whole flax seed as this compound is believed to have health effects. Decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation should improve a number of the problems associated with aging. This intervention consists of 600 milligrams of the flax lignan SDG daily or an equivalent amount of whey protein. The investigators are comparing lignan to a placebo (whey powder) to examine whether a dietary intervention (i.e. flax seed containing lignan) might decrease oxidative stress and inflammation.
The primary purpose of this study is to demonstrate the safety of injecting the Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF) [containing Adipose Derived Stem Cells (ADSCs)] enriched fat grafts into regions of the face that require enhancement. The safety of SVF will be evaluated throughout the course of the study phase through the assessment of laboratory values, physical examinations, adverse events, safety phone calls etc.
This study will investigate the extent to which intranasal oxytocin affects changes in social decision making and evaluations of others. Oxytocin is a hormone that naturally occurs in the body and the brain and has been shown to be relevant for many behaviors, particularly in social situations. Research on the effects of oxytocin in aging is very scarce; therefore, the purpose of this research project is to determine the effects of oxytocin on socioemotional aging.
The overall objective of this project is to thoroughly investigate the effects of diet-induced weight loss in the absence of or in combination with exercise on skeletal muscle IR, energy metabolism and function. These studies will significantly improve our understanding of the fundamental biochemical and molecular factors linking intervention-induced changes in mitochondria, oxidative stress, lipotoxicity, IR, and loss of muscle function in aging humans.
Aging causes anatomical and physiological changes in the respiratory system and respiratory muscle strength with decline in its maximum function. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of inspiratory muscle training on respiratory muscle strength, thickness of the diaphragm and diaphragmatic mobility in older women. The investigators' hypothesis is that inspiratory muscle training improves respiratory muscle strength, the thickness of the diaphragm and diaphragmatic mobility in older women.
The purpose of this study is to compare the outcomes for two different hearing-aid delivery models. In one model, the audiologist selects and fits the hearing aid and, in the other model, the consumer does this directly.
