Effects of a Multicomponent Exercise Intervention on Physical and Cognitive Function of Older Adults With Dementia

Body&Brain
Start date: September 1, 2018
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Dementia is a leading cause of death and disability that was declared as one of the greatest health and social care challenges of the 21st century. Regular physical activity and exercise have been proposed as a non-pharmacological strategy in disease prevention and management. Multicomponent Training (MT) combines aerobic, strength, balance, and postural exercises and might be an effective training to improve both functional capacity and cognitive function in individuals with dementia (IwD). Nevertheless, data on the effects of MT in IwD are still limited and the extent to which IwD can retain improvements after an exercise intervention still needs to be elucidated. The aim of "Body & Brain" study is to investigate the effects of a 6-month MT intervention and 3-month detraining on the physical and cognitive function of IwD. Additionally, we aim to explore the impact of this intervention on psychosocial factors and physiologic markers related to dementia.

NCT ID: NCT03986424 Completed - Vascular Dementia Clinical Trials

Efficacy and Safety of Butylphthalide Soft Capsule for the Treatment of Vascular Dementia

Start date: October 29, 2019
Phase: Phase 3
Study type: Interventional

Butylphthalide soft capsule has been confirmed to have beneficial effects for patients with vascular dementia (VaD) in clinical trial of phase II study. So the investigators hypothesize that Butylphthalide soft capsule may have same beneficial effects for patients with VaD in an extended samples in phase III study. In present study the investigators will recruit patients with mild to moderate VaD in a multi-center, random, double blind and placebo control methods to confirm the efficacy and safety of Butylphthalide soft capsule. The outcome measures include general cognitive function, executive function, daily living skills, and mental behavior changes of symptoms in VaD patients.

NCT ID: NCT03789760 Completed - Vascular Dementia Clinical Trials

The Clinical Trial of Chinese Herbal Medicine (SaiLuoTong) Capsule

Start date: April 10, 2019
Phase: Phase 3
Study type: Interventional

As a traditional Chinese medicine compound, SaiLuoTong capsule is proven to have beneficial effects on learning and memory ability in animal models of vascular dementia (VaD). According to the result of the phase II study, the efficacy of SaiLuoTong capsule in the treatment of patients with VaD was better than that of placebo group and no difference in safety. So the study hypothesis is also that SaiLuoTong capsule will be effective in the treatment of patients with VaD and will be well tolerated. The purpose of the study is to confirm the efficacy and safety of SaiLuoTong capsule on patients with mild to moderate VaD. The outcome measures include general cognitive function, executive function, daily living skills, and mental behavior changes of symptoms in VaD patients.

NCT ID: NCT03783754 Terminated - Stroke Clinical Trials

Triple Therapy Prevention of Recurrent Intracerebral Disease EveNts Trial Magnetic Resonance Imaging Sub-study

TRIDENT-MRI
Start date: August 9, 2018
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

TRIDENT Main Study: TRIDENT is a multicentre, international, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, randomised controlled trial of a fixed low-dose combination BP-lowering pill ("Triple Pill") strategy on top of standard of care, in patients with a history of acute intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) levels defined as 'high normal to borderline high', and on either minimal or no BP-lowering treatment according to current guidelines. MRI Sub-Study Centres capable of specific MRI of the brain sequences will be identified. The patients in the TRIDENT main study who are identified to be eligible for the MRI Sub-Study will undergo MRI scans at baseline (6 weeks to 6 months post-randomisation) and at 36-month follow-up time points. All data collected will be analysed centrally at the Brain and Mind Centre (BMC) in Sydney, Australia.

Learning and Coping With Early Stage Dementia

Start date: March 3, 2014
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The overall aim of this study is to investigate how home dwelling people with early-stage dementia cope with their disease, explored through their participation in a 12-week health promotion course, through 3 sub-studies; 1) The users' experience in gaining information about dementia and meeting others in the same situation, 2) observation of the group interactions and support processes, and 3) investigate the effect of the 12-week health promotion course for people with early stage dementia on their cognitive function, psychosocial function and health behaviour.

NCT ID: NCT03724136 Enrolling by invitation - Alzheimer Disease Clinical Trials

Alzheimer's Autism and Cognitive Impairment Stem Cell Treatment Study

ACIST
Start date: October 24, 2018
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the use of autologous Bone Marrow Derived Stem Cells (BMSC) as a means to improve cognitive impairment as occurs in Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias and to improve behavior and socialization issues which occur in adult Autism Spectrum Disorder. The use of Near Infrared Light, in conjunction with the use of BMSC, will also be assessed.

NCT ID: NCT03702543 Not yet recruiting - Vascular Dementia Clinical Trials

Managing Vascular Dementia Risk Factors With SymTrend

Start date: October 15, 2018
Phase: Phase 1
Study type: Interventional

Individuals with uncontrolled vascular disease are at risk for an insidious progression of brain injury starting in early to midlife and ultimately culminating in a vascular dementia, robbing them of activities of daily living independence. Successful containment of this progression requires rigorous vascular risk factor management - the control of blood pressure, blood sugars, weight, and alcohol consumption; the cessation of smoking, and an increase in aerobic activity. SymTrend's mobile and web system for managing vascular risk factors will help improve adherence to health and lifestyle strategies, will stem cognitive decline, and will preserve independence in the community for older adults.

NCT ID: NCT03682185 Completed - Alzheimer Disease Clinical Trials

The Healthy Patterns Sleep Study

Start date: May 1, 2016
Phase: Phase 3
Study type: Interventional

The Healthy Patterns Study intervention is a home-based activity intervention designed to improve symptoms of circadian rhythm disorders (CRD) and quality of life (QOL) in home-dwelling persons with dementia. We will use a randomized two-group parallel design of 200 people with dementia and their caregivers assigned to intervention or attention control groups.

Innovations in Dementia Empowerment and Action

IDEA
Start date: December 5, 2018
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The lack of efficacious research-based interventions for such vulnerable older adults with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/RD) and their caregivers (CGs) is a significant public health problem. Caregiving of sexual/gender minority older adults with AD/RD is of concern due to social stigma, marginalization, and isolation, which may be barriers to sustaining caregiving. It is necessary and timely to translate evidence-based culturally adaptable interventions for this underserved and stigmatized population. Reducing Disability in Alzheimer's Disease (RDAD) has been evaluated in a randomized controlled trial and has shown to successfully train community-dwelling CR (care receiver)-CG dyads to increase the physical activity and functioning of individuals with AD/RD and their CGs and to teach CGs techniques for managing behavioral symptoms of CRs. RDAD consequently decreases stress of CGs, delays institutionalization of CRs, and increases health related quality of life (HRQOL) of CRs and CGs. Thus, this study will evaluate the effect of the standard RDAD among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) CRs with AD/RD and their CGs, and this study will test a personalized intervention tailored to better respond to distinct risks experienced by CGs and LGBT CRs with AD/RD, addressing unique sexual/gender minority CG risk factors (e.g., identity management, stigma-related adverse or traumatic life events, and lack of social support).
