A Confirmatory Study Confirming Performance of a New Intermittent Catheter

A multi-centre, randomised, controlled crossover design. The total study duration for the individual subject was approximately 9 weeks, consisting of four site visits and two 4-week test periods at home. Visits 0 and 1 could be performed on the same day. For visit 2 and 3, catheterisations were performed in a hospital setting for bladder emptying assessment and collection of urine samples (the latter only in Denmark). Visit 1 and 2 were followed by a home-use test period, followed by visit 3 which terminated the study.

Performance of a Single-use Intermittent Micro-hole Zone Catheter

The goal of this randomized, controlled crossover study was to assess the performance of a new micro-hole zone catheter compared to a conventional 2-eyelet catheter in 42 male intermittent catheter users. The main objective of this study was to demonstrate superiority of the micro-hole zone catheter in terms of number of flow-stop episodes and residual volume at first flow-stop, with the catheterization performed by a health care professional in a hospital setting compared to a conventional two-eyelet catheter.

Efficacy of Alpha-blockers (Tamsulosin) in the Treatment of Symptomatic Dysuria in Multiple Sclerosis in Women

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the leading non-traumatic cause of severe acquired disability in young people. The disease is defined by relapses, which can affect all neurological functions depending on the location of the new inflammatory lesion(s). The disease can thus manifest itself through bladder and bowel disorders (BWS), which affect approximately 80% of MS patients in all stages. Lower urinary tract dysfunction has a significant negative impact on the quality of life of patients and places a significant burden on the healthcare system in terms of resource allocation. In addition, there is a risk of long-term chronic renal failure, an infectious risk (recurrent cystitis and/or pyelonephritis, sometimes life-threatening) and a lithiasis risk. The most frequently observed urinary symptoms are: urinary frequency, urgency with or without urinary incontinence, dysuria and chronic retention of urine. These disorders most often combine bladder hyperactivity and dysuria. This dysuria may be responsible for recurrent urinary tract infections, lithiasis, alteration of renal function. The only therapeutic class currently used to treat dysuria in MS is alpha-blockers. Tamsulosin, alfusozin and doxazosin induce relaxation of the urethral smooth sphincter and prostatic urethral muscle fibers, facilitating the removal of subvesical obstruction and bladder emptying. The study investigators hypothesize that treatment with tamsulosin 0.4 mg daily in adult MS patients with dysuria will result in symptom improvement as assessed by the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and Urinary Symptom Profile (USP) scores, a decrease in post-void residual, and an improvement in urine flow and quality of life.

RCT Foley Catheter Study for Elective TJA

Urinary retention is a known complication following surgical procedures, with a theoretical increased risk in patients receiving neuraxial anesthesia due to a decreased ability to sense bladder distension. Urinary retention is associated with adverse events including bladder atony, increased post void residuals, and postoperative urinary tract infection. Treatment of urinary retention involves intermittent or indwelling urinary catheter placement, both of which are associated with an increased prevalence of postoperative urinary tract infection. There currently is no consensus whether the use of a urinary catheter in elective joint arthroplasty with neuraxial anesthesia decreases the risk of urinary retention. The prevalence of retention reported in the literature varies widely with reports anywhere from 0% to 75% in patients with early removal of a catheter or after procedures performed without a catheter. The goal of this study is to determine whether the routine use of an indwelling urinary catheter decreases the rate of postoperative urinary retention in patients undergoing elective joint arthroplasty.

The Connected Catheter is a fully internal, urethral indwelling urinary prosthesis designed for improved bladder management in males with urinary retention disorders requiring catheterization. It is a sterile, extended-use device that resides fully internally to the male lower urinary tract for an intended use life of up to 7 days per catheter.

Patients who were using anticoagulant or antiaggregant medications for any reason and underwent transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TUR-BT) or transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or open prostatectomy (OP) due to BPH will be compared with those who were not using anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication. The rates of postoperative clot retention, presence of hematuria, reoperation due to hematuria, blood transfusion and re-admissions due to hematuria in the first postoperative month will be compared.

Currently, the assessment of symptoms at baseline and after stage I is directed towards a discipline related evaluation. The OptiLUTS trial strives for a more holistic approach, taking all pelvic floor dysfunctions into account. A holistic assessment tool will be developed and SNM-care pathway will be set-up.
