Filter by:In a Hybrid Type 2 randomized trial, 1,980 low-income smokers from nine states with high smoking prevalence will be recruited from 2-1-1 helplines to receive either current standard practice (Quitline) or expanded services (Quitline + Smoke Free Homes) to increase tobacco cessation.

This study will evaluate a reward devaluation strategy in which smokers use the JUUL e-cigarette immediately before any combustible cigarettes (CCs) are smoked. This procedure is predicted to accomplish three goals: 1) the rewarding effects of CC will be disrupted because subjects will already have attained fairly high peak nicotine concentrations immediately before smoking the cigarette. This reduces the rewarding effect of smoking, in part from receptor desensitization that occurs following nicotine exposure, which reduces the response to a subsequent dose of nicotine, and in part from satiating the drive to smoke; 2) the use of the JUUL will become associated with the same cues that elicit smoking, thereby promoting the substitution of JUUL use for CC use; and 3) ad libitum nicotine intake from the JUUL and its rewarding effects will be maximized because, unlike CC, they will be experienced after a period of nicotine deprivation. Thus, despite a lower per-puff nicotine dose relative to CC, the pharmacologic impact and reinforcing effect will be maximized. The study will evaluate two flavors (Mint and Virginia Tobacco), randomly assigned, to determine if flavor assignment (similar to the subjects' usual brand of CC or different than the subjects usual brand CC) has an effect on the success of this reconditioning procedure.
This study will use wearable technology to test the feasibility and efficacy of delivering a novel real-time smoking intervention to improve standard tobacco treatment.
This is a pilot sequential multiple assignment trial (SMART) to understand the optimal timing to assess response to our smoking cessation text message intervention and to measure how adding medications alone compares to adding medications and telephone coaching for those who continue to smoke. This study aims to assess the feasibility of a SMART of a proactively offered text message intervention for smokers in primary care that compares early (4 weeks) versus late (8 weeks) assessment of treatment response and the addition of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) alone or with telephone coaching for non-responders.
Brief advice combined with active referral to smoking cessation (SC) services increases quitting. We aim to strengthen the effect of combined intervention by using interactive communication technologies and nicotine replacement therapy sampling (NRT-S).
Financial incentives for motivating changes in health behavior, particularly for smoking and other morbid habits, are increasingly being tested by health insurers, employers, and government agencies. However, in using incentive programs for smoking cessation, key unanswered structural and theoretical questions remain regarding their effectiveness, acceptability to patients, and economic sustainability. This trial aims to advance the science and implementation of financial incentives for smoking cessation interventions among high-risk, hospitalized smokers. The investigators will pursue two specific aims: 1) comparing the impact of three approaches for smoking cessation on smoking abstinence, use of evidenced-based therapy, and quality of life and 2) comparing the short-term and long term return on investment of using goal directed and outcome-based financial incentives to promote smoking cessation.
Assess the feasibility and acceptability of delivering an mHealth tobacco intervention among state quitline enrollees.
Due to the pandemic, this study was modified from a randomized clinical trial to test the feasibility, initial efficacy, and mechanisms of action of our PTSC-S intervention to a feasibility and acceptability test of our intervention when delivered via telehealth in a single group, within-subjects design.
The overall goal of this renewal is three-fold: (1) to continue to sustain and strengthen the network; (2) to conduct a group randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of a theory-based, culturally- and gender-relevant Community Health Worker intervention for Brazilian women "light smokers" that will augment the smoking cessation programs offered through the public health system; and (3) to expand our current Career Development and Research Training Program to the other two major tobacco growing states in order to develop a cadre of well-trained researchers who will continue to develop and implement gender-relevant comprehensive tobacco control strategies at all levels.
