The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of problem-solving therapy (PST), supplemented by a smartphone application, in the treatment of men who present to the Emergency Departments in Ontario. A total of 100 men in 5 Emergency Departments will be enrolled and randomized to receive either face-to-face PST or face-to-face PST supplemented by the BEACON Suicide Prevention smartphone application. Face-to-face therapy may be provided via videoconference to accommodate patient preference and ongoing pandemic restrictions. Participants will complete six sessions of PST and outcomes will be measured at baseline, 6 weeks, two post-therapy follow-up time points (3 and 6 months). Participants will also be asked to complete a qualitative interview about their participation in the study and their experience with the smartphone application.
Background: Suicide rates are rising. In 2013, it was the third leading cause of death in children ages 10-14. It was the second leading cause of death for ages 15-24. Many risk factors for suicide have been found. But it is hard to predict. Evidence is growing that some factors that may make people vulnerable to suicide can be identified before birth or in early childhood. Researchers want to study vulnerability to suicide. They want to look at different kinds of development. These include prenatal, social, behavioral, cognitive, and neurologic. They will do this by linking data from the United States Collaborate Perinatal Project (CPP) to the National Death Index (NDI). The CPP data are from about 50,000 children born to mothers who enrolled in the 1960s. The CPP observed and examined about 60,000 pregnancies. Then it followed the babies from when they were born through age 7. The CPP collected data on things like family and medical history, economic status, and behavior. The NDI has data on the date and cause of death. Objective: To link data from the CPP to the NDI in order to study certain precursors to suicide. Eligibility: Offspring born to women who enrolled in the CPP in 1959-1966 and known to be alive at age 7 (Note: at the start of this study around in 2016, the youngest of those still alive would be 50 and the oldest would be 57 years old). Design: Data on children from the CPP will be submitted electronically to the NDI. It will be encrypted and data from the NDI will be deidentified to protect confidentiality. Reducing youth suicide in the U.S. is a national public health priority. Sexual and gender minority adolescents are at elevated risk for suicide. Safer school environments, however, can decrease this risk. This study capitalizes on the critical role of school nurses in improving the mental health of this vulnerable population through implementation and sustainment of evidence-based strategies to enhance school environments. In addition to suicide, the conceptual framework and methods for this novel, nurse-led intervention can be applied to address the health-related concerns of other pediatric populations encountered in school settings as well.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for American Indians and Alaska Natives aged 18 years and older. This study will evaluate Caring Contacts, a low-cost, sustainable intervention for suicide prevention that sends caring messages to people at risk. The investigators will implement the intervention at four tribal sites, leveraging community strengths and values to address this tragic health disparity in an underserved minority population.
The four year SPIRIT Trial, or Suicide Prevention Intervention for at-Risk Individuals in Transition, will recruit 800 pretrial jail detainees at risk for suicide. Each participant will be randomly assigned to today's standard care or to Safety Planning Intervention (SPI) method and then followed for one year after release. Outcomes include suicide events, suicide attempts and ideation, psychiatric symptoms, functioning, treatment utilization, problem-solving, belongingness, and cost-effectiveness.
The study wants to prove that SMS monitoring reduced the number of suicide attempts in six months according to the beginning of its implementation in the group of the patients benefiting SMS compared with the group of patients benefiting from the usual care.
Patients will be receiving a stem cell transplant as treatment for their disease. As part of the stem cell transplant, patients will be given very strong doses of chemotherapy, which will kill all their existing stem cells. A close relative of the patient will be identified, whose stem cells are not a perfect match for the patient's, but can be used. This type of transplant is called "allogeneic", meaning that the cells are from a donor. With this type of donor who is not a perfect match, there is typically an increased risk of developing GvHD, and a longer delay in the recovery of the immune system. GvHD is a serious and sometimes fatal side-effect of stem cell transplant. GvHD occurs when the new donor cells (graft) recognize that the body tissues of the patient (host) are different from those of the donor. In this study, investigators are trying to see whether they can make special T cells in the laboratory that can be given to the patient to help their immune system recover faster. As a safety measure, we want to "program" the T cells so that if, after they have been given to the patient, they start to cause GvHD, we can destroy them ("suicide gene"). Investigators will obtain T cells from a donor, culture them in the laboratory, and then introduce the "suicide gene" which makes the cells sensitive to a specific drug called AP1903. If the specially modified T cells begin to cause GvHD, the investigators can kill the cells by administering AP1903 to the patient. We have had encouraging results in a previous study regarding the effective elimination of T cells causing GvHD, while sparing a sufficient number of T cells to fight infection and potentially cancer. More specifically, T cells made to carry a gene called iCasp9 can be killed when they encounter the drug AP1903. To get the iCasp9 gene into T cells, we insert it using a virus called a retrovirus that has been made for this study. The AP1903 that will be used to "activate" the iCasp9 is an experimental drug that has been tested in a study in normal donors with no bad side-effects. We hope we can use this drug to kill the T cells. The major purpose of this study is to find a safe and effective dose of "iCasp9" T cells that can be given to patients who receive an allogeneic stem cell transplant. Another important purpose of this study is to find out whether these special T cells can help the patient's immune system recover faster after the transplant than they would have otherwise.
This study will implement and empirically evaluate the efficacy of a cognitive behavioral intervention program, titled, Post Admission Cognitive Therapy(PACT), for military service members and beneficiaries [with Veterans expected to be added] admitted for inpatient care due to severe suicide ideation and/or a recent suicide attempt.
The Community Youth Development Study is an experimental test of the Communities That Care (CTC) prevention planning system. It has been designed to find out if communities that were trained to use the CTC system improved public health by reducing rates of adolescent drug use, delinquency, violence, and risky sexual behavior when compared to communities that did not use this approach. The primary purpose of the current continuation study is to investigate whether CTC has long-term effects on substance use, antisocial behavior, and violence, as well as secondary effects on educational attainment, mental health, and sexual risk behavior in young adults at ages 26 and 28. The continuation study also examines (a) how the interaction of social, normative, and legal marijuana contexts creates variation in the permissiveness of individuals' marijuana environments from late childhood to young adulthood and (b) whether, when, and for whom permissive marijuana environments increase marijuana and ATOD use and misuse from age 11 to 28 and interfere with the adoption of adult roles.
