Filter by:The goal of this pilot clinical trial is to evaluate the feasibility and limited effectiveness of a digital, arts-based educational intervention addressing nurse stigma towards perinatal substance use. The main questions it aims to answer are: - What is the the feasibility of delivering the training through an asynchronous, web-based platform? - What is the limited effectiveness of the program on nurse stigma towards perinatal substance use? Participants will access and complete the training, including completion of a perinatal substance use stigma scale at baseline, immediately post, and 1-2 months month later. Participants will also be invited to participate in an interview. Researchers will compare the intervention and control groups to see if the training reduces nurse stigma towards perinatal substance use.
The goal of this study is to test the efficacy of a brief video intervention emphasizing peer inclusion on depression-related stigma and stigma outcomes (e.g., help seeking attitudes, secrecy) among adolescents 14-18. Timely identification and treatment of depression in adolescents is a public health priority. However, most youth with depression do not seek treatment, and stigma has been identified as the primary barrier to help-seeking. Experiments have found brief video-based interventions (BVIs), 1-2 minute videos similar to those viewed by youth on social media platforms, based on the principle of "social contact" with individuals affected by a stigmatized condition, effective in reducing depression-related stigma and increasing help-seeking among adolescents. However, given the extreme time constraints of these videos, optimizing the messaging is paramount. Prior research has indicated that concerns about peer social inclusion are fundamental in shaping stigma among adolescents. In this 3-arm RCT, we will recruit adolescents aged 14-18 using an online crowdsourcing platform, to test the efficacy of a) standard BVI that addresses mental health treatment but does not address concerns about peer inclusion/exclusion, b) novel BVI focused on mental health treatment and peer inclusion, and c) control condition that provides information without social contact.
In the fight against stigma, the focus should be on the education of individuals diagnosed with mental illness. Psychoeducation has an important place in the treatment and rehabilitation of mental health problems. Psychoeducation is necessary for early recognition of signs and symptoms of diseases, ensuring compliance with treatment, improving coping skills, as well as combating stigma, preventing internalized stigma, and counteracting social stigma. If individuals with mental disorders have adequate knowledge about the causes of stigma, they may be less prone to internalized stigma.
The Social Responses to Stigma study will explore experiences of stigma and discrimination amongst people who are homeless in south London, and then seek to understand how this stigma is created, mediated or mitigated within health, social, housing and legal care and support systems and social contexts. The methodology is an ethnographic case study of the south London care and support system and its social context. The study will use a range of methods for data collection: interviews with people who are homeless, delivery stakeholders, and policy makers; a survey of peoples' experiences; observation within selected care sites; and gathering of documentary sources. The study will be implemented through two parallel studies. The first, with KCL-REMAS approval, will operate in non-NHS sites. The second, with NHS-IRAS approval, will operate in NHS sites. The protocols are aligned with adaptations for each type of site. A linked method to develop theory is cross-case comparison between South London and Vancouver, Canada, through secondary data analysis to linked studies ongoing there. The study will be ongoing from 2022 until January 2025. The project is funded in two phases, with potential to extend the study by a further three years, to January 2028. The results of the study will inform the design of a novel intervention strategy to address the social dimensions of stigma. Subject to additional funding applications, the intervention strategy will be piloted and evaluated from 2025 onwards. The study results will be disseminated through scientific publications, public reports and a range of public and policy engagement activities.
Project RESTART (Resisting STigma And Revaluating your Thoughts) is a theory-informed, 4-week automated text message intervention to address self-stigma in people who use drugs. The intervention delivers two daily messages to participants for four weeks (56 messages total). Messages are designed to address four components of Stigma Resistance Theory: Not believing stigma/catching and challenging stigmatizing thoughts; empowering oneself through learning about substance use and one's own recovery; maintaining one's recovery and proving stigma wrong; and developing a meaningful identity and purpose apart from one's substance use. This study is a single-group pilot trial to determine whether the intervention is feasible and acceptable to participants. All participants will receive the intervention. The primary outcomes are changes in stigma resistance and self-stigma from baseline to 4-week follow-up using self-report. Implementation and process outcomes will be measured to inform future intervention refinement.
This study aims to measure levels of mental illness stigma based on condition and gender of the participants and individual portrayed with mental illness.
This study will adapt a school version (mhGAP-IGs) of the World Health Organization´s (WHO) "Mental Health Gap Action Programme Intervention Guide" (mhGAP). Both teachers and health workers will receive training in mhGAP, and systems for collaboration between the school and health sector as well as other relevant stakeholders will be developed and integrated. The project is conducted in close collaboration with key stakeholders from the Ministry, the health and education sector, the police, and religious leaders. The aim is to increase mental health literacy among school staff, facilitate a healthy school environment, and increase detection of mental health needs among primary school aged children.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate a pilot peer support intervention, entitled "Kanasina Gulabi" (Translation "My Dream Rose" in Kannada), designed to improve quality of life and diabetes management among young adults living with type 2 diabetes. The intervention, delivered by non-specialist providers - trained young adult peer navigators who are also managing type 2 diabetes - is expected to improve physical and mental health outcomes among participants. The sample includes young adults aged 18-40 with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in Mysore district, South India. Participants were quasi-randomly allocated to the intervention or control group. With the support of their peer navigators, intervention participants will develop action plans to improve their physical and mental health outcomes. This study plans to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of the intervention.
Depression is a leading cause of illness and disability in teenagers. Longer duration of untreated depression (DUD) is associated with greater severity, poorer outcome, and cognitive impairment. Stigma toward people with depression has been identified as a barrier to seeking help; therefore, reducing stigma toward young people at depressive risk could enhance their receptivity to seeking treatment. Social contact is a form of interpersonal contact with members of the stigmatized group and the most effective type of intervention for improvement in stigma-related knowledge and attitudes. In a prior study, the investigators developed short video interventions to reduce stigma and increase treatment seeking among adolescents with depression. The videos feature adolescent protagonists varied by race/ethncitiy and gender (Black girl, Black boy, White girl, White boy, Hispanic girl, Hispanic boy, nonbinary or transgender adolescent) who will share their experiences with depression, challenges, and recovery process. The investigators would like to conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to test the efficacy of these tailored videos as compared to a video control condition (which provides information about depression and how to seek help but does not include a personal story) on reducing self-stigma and increasing help-seeking intentions and behavior at baseline, post, 2 week follow-up, and 4 week follow-up among adolescents ages 14-18 recruited via Cloudresearch. The videos will be shown again at 2 week follow-up.

In a prior study, the investigators developed short video interventions to reduce stigma and increase treatment seeking among people with depression. The videos vary by protagonist race/ethnicity (Latinx, non-Latinx Black, non-Latinx White) who share their experiences with depression, challenges, and recovery process. The investigators would like to test the efficacy of these videos using Prolific (a crowdsourcing platform). Specifically, the investigators are interested in conducting a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to test the efficacy of these videos as compared to a vignette control condition on reducing self-stigma and increasing help-seeking intentions and behavior at baseline, post, and 30 day follow-up among youth with depressive symptom scores on the PHQ-9≥ 5.
