Filter by:This study answers a U.S. Food and Drug Administration requirement for evaluation in people of a manufacturing lot of vaccine. Subjects receive one dose of one lot of vaccine. The antibodies in the blood measure the immunogenicity of the vaccine, and typical vaccine safety information is also collected.
Patients admitted into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) have an intravenous (IV) catheter (small plastic tube) placed in their vein. Very occasionally (4 times out of 100) the insertion of an intravenous catheter may cause an infection in the blood. It has been shown that the removal of the catheter and the insertion of a new one at a new site helps to get rid of this infection. Sometimes, antibiotics are also given. Vancomycin is the antibiotic given intravenously (into the vein) to treat these catheter-related infections. At Vancouver General Hospital, some physicians may not give any vancomycin at all whereas others may treat with intravenous (IV) vancomycin for one to fourteen days. Since there are a lack of data to support the length of IV vancomycin therapy, the investigators would like to find out if two days of IV vancomycin are as good as seven days. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine if two days of IV vancomycin are as good as seven days for the treatment of catheter-related infections in the blood.
In order to evaluate the effect of eliminating nasal carriage by mupirocin prophylaxis on subsequent Staphylococcus aureus infection, a prospective randomized trial was performed particularly including patients with predisposing risk factors for S. aureus infections.
Nosocomial infections is a major problem in intensive care units due to both growing incidence and pathogens implicated which become increasingly resistant to antibiotics. According to the Center for Disease Control (USA), Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for approximately 10% of cases. In Europe, 79% of the S.aureus strains are resistant to methicillin, a routinely used antibiotic. Recommendations for the prevention of transmission of these resistant bacteria are rarely based on controlled trials. Therefore the aim of our study is to evaluate two protocols to prevent the acquisition of methicillin-resistant S. Aureus in intensive care units: either a reinforced isolation precautions protocol or a standard precautions protocol.
Study 0019 (NCT00124020) compares the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug, telavancin, with vancomycin for the treatment of hospital-acquired pneumonia.
The purpose of this study is to show whether Veronate, a donor-selected staphylococcal human immune globulin intravenous (IGIV), can prevent an infection in the blood caused by staphylococcal bacteria in premature babies weighing between 500 and 1250 grams at birth. Babies are enrolled between Day of Life 3 and 5. Babies are randomized to either Veronate or placebo (50-50 chance of either). Babies can receive up to 4 doses of the study drug on Study Days 1, 3, 8 and 15 and are followed until Study Day 70 or discharge from the hospital.
The purpose of this study is to determine if mupirocin 2% in polyethylene glycol (PEG) ointment [Treatment Arm] is effective in preventing moderate to severe re-infection with Staphylococcus aureus compared with treatment with polyethylene glycol (PEG) ointment [Placebo Arm].
