The Role of Flavor in the Substitutability of E-cigarettes for Combustible Cigarettes Among Persistent Smokers

Start date: July 2024
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

This between-subjects study aims to evaluate the effect of flavor on initial and sustained switching from combustible cigarettes to e-cigarettes among 210 cigarette smokers. After measuring baseline cigarette smoking rate, participants will be randomized to a six-week regimen of fruit-flavored, tobacco-flavored, or menthol-flavored e-cigarettes and be instructed to switch (versus smoking cigarettes) over a 6-week period. Flavor-associated subjective reward and the reinforcing value of flavored e-cigarettes relative to combustible cigarettes will be assessed as mechanisms.

Observe the Effect of Wheatgrass and Tulsi Formulation or Individuals Taken With Other Allopathic Drugs

Start date: May 10, 2023
Phase:
Study type: Observational

Antioxidant qualities have been attributed to wheatgrass and tulsi formulation. Free radicals are unstable molecules created by the body during metabolism and exposure to environmental pollutants. Antioxidants are chemicals that can help stop or reduce cell damage caused by these unstable molecules. Oxidative stress, which is brought on by free radicals, has been connected to a number of health issues, including chronic inflammation, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and ageing. Wheatgrass is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and chlorophyll, which have been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Tulsi, also known as holy basil, is an herb that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries and has been found to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. Several studies have investigated the antioxidant properties of wheatgrass and tulsi formulation. For instance, a study published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology in 2015 found that wheatgrass extract had significant antioxidant activity, as measured by its ability to scavenge free radicals and reduce lipid peroxidation in vitro.

Health Behaviour Change in Brazilians

Start date: July 2022
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Chronic diseases are the leading health problem in Brazil and Canada. Such diseases share common risk factors in common, such as physical inactivity, poor diet, and smoking. This context requires a comprehensive approach to change these behavioural risk factors, aiming at the promotion of healthy lifestyles and the prevention of diseases. Although Brazil and Canada have significant differences, particularly in terms of socioeconomic factors, some similarities in the health domain allow both countries to mutually benefit from an exchange of knowledge. For instance, the newest version of Canada's dietary guidelines has incorporated several aspects presented in the pioneering evidence-based dietary guidelines for the Brazilian population, launched in 2014. Similarly, Brazil can greatly benefit if the country follows the Canadian lead in prioritizing investment in physical activity initiatives. The present project aims to verify the effectiveness of a Canadian program to change health behaviours, specifically physical inactivity, poor diet, and smoking, adapted for Brazilians. The project consists of a 12-week randomized controlled trial, based on education and behaviour change techniques focusing on physical activity, healthy eating habits, and smoking cessation. Pre-, post, and 3-month follow-up health and fitness assessments will evaluate respectively the initial condition of the participants, eventual changes and if the changes persist.

Smokerface Mirroring in Brazil RCT

Start date: February 1, 2018
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Before February 2018 the baseline survey is conducted in about 60 class in Brazilian secondary schools. These classes are randomized to control and intervention group in a 1/1 manner. A few weeks thereafter medical students from the local medical school visit the schools and perform a smoking prevention intervention called "photoaging mirroring intervention" which takes about 45 minutes. One month and six months after the intervention the intervention group receives another anonymous questionnaire monitoring smoking status. The primary endpoint is the difference in the chance of smoking prevalence between the two groups.
