Filter by:This program of research tested the effectiveness of an iPad delivered multiple behavior intervention grounded in the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change for pregnant women. It was hypothesized that the intervention would reduce the number of health behavior risks reported by pregnant women in the treatment group. The target behaviors of the intervention are smoking cessation and relapse prevention, stress management, and fruit and vegetable consumption.
The primary aim of this study is to determine menthol smokers' perception, product preference, and pattern of use across six products including, 1) mint-flavored 2mg nicotine gum ; 2) mint-flavored 4mg nicotine gum; 3) non-flavored 2mg nicotine gum; 4) non-flavored 4mg nicotine gum; 5) mint-flavored electronic cigarette; and 6) non-flavored electronic cigarette. Fifty smokers (all African American menthol smokers) will be recruited for this study. Participants will undergo a baseline assessment followed by a 2-week product sampling phase.
Smoking and depressed mood are both predictive of mortality following Acute Coronary Syndrome. However, to date, no counseling treatment has been designed to target smoking cessation and manage mood in this population. This trial will test such a treatment based on Behavioral Activation, an approach that has shown promise as an integrated treatment for smoking and mood management in other populations.
According to the Census & Statistics Department (2011), there are still 659,300 daily smokers (11.1%) in Hong Kong. Smoking and passive smoking kill over 7,000 people per year. Smoking is addictive, and it is difficult for some motivated smokers to quit without assistance. On the other hand, many smokers may not be ready to quit or want to quit on their own, so it is difficult to reach them. Quit and Win programme is an opportunity to reach and encourage a large group of smokers to make quit attempt. Quit and Win Contest assumes that smokers can develop a higher motivation to quit and gain a wider social support in quitting. According to Cahill and Petera (2011), smokers can develop a high motivation to quit and gain a wider social support through participating in the Quit and Win Contest. The Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (COSH) organized three "Quit to Win Contests" and recruited over 3000 smokers from 2009-2012. These events enhanced the motivation and confidence to quit smoking. Lucky draw was also conducted to attract smokers to quit smoking and winners were validated by biochemical tests. Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is an partnership approach that can enlighten and utilize the network within communities as community partners can obtain ample manpower and social resources. To effectively raise the awareness of the contest and recruit as many participants as we can from the community, working with NGOs in the 18 Hong Kong districts with a CBPR model may be one effective way of program implementation. Thus, we proposed to (1) test the effectiveness of combining competition and short-term monetary incentives to motivate smokers who participate in the Quit to Win Contest 2013 to quit smoking; (2) use a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) model to build capacity and to engage community partners in taking on this important public health issue for sustainability in the community; and (3) conduct the process evaluation to assess the effectiveness of the recruitment activity and how it is linked with the overall program outcomes. Hypothesis: To examine the effectiveness of the interventions, three arms are (i) Group A: Informed early monetary incentive, which participants will be notified of the incentive through telephone follow-up at 1-week and 1-month follow-ups; (ii) Group B: Uninformed early monetary incentive, which participants will not be informed about the incentive until 3-month telephone follow-up; (iii) Group C (control group): Uninformed late monetary incentive, which participants will not be informed about the incentive throughout 1-week, 1-month and 3-month follow-ups. The primary outcomes are the self-reported 7-day point prevalence (pp) quit rate at 3 months of group A compared to group B and group C. The secondary outcomes include (i) self-reported 7-day point prevalence (pp) quit rate at 6 months, (ii) biochemical validated quit rates, (iii) rate of smoking reduction by at least half of baseline amount, (iv) number of quit attempts at 3 and 6 months among the three groups and (v) the above cessation outcomes of all subjects, including or not including in the RCT.
This project is designed to test the effects of affirmation and positive/negative imagery on individuals' thoughts about quitting smoking and willingness to join a stop smoking program. Previous studies have noted that viewing negative images elicits a stronger emotional response, and many stop-smoking campaigns have used such images to push people to quit smoking. However, research also shows that people are generally resistant to health messages. Using affirmation can help to lessen that resistance. In this study, we use a 2x3 design to study the individual effects of negative imagery and affirmation on smokers' intentions to quit smoking, acceptance of an offer to join a quit smoking program, and program participation and outcomes. We hope to find out whether there is an additive effect of the negative imagery and affirmation on the outcomes listed above. Our specific aims are: Aim 1: Determine if affirmation increases the uptake of an offer of joining a stop smoking program. Aim 2: Determine if image type (positive vs. neutral vs. negative) increases the uptake of the stop smoking program offer. Aim 3: Determine whether there is an interaction between image type and affirmation in people's willingness to join a stop smoking program.
This study compares two methods of teaching the 5As (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) for tobacco dependence treatment to medical students: 1) traditional medical education (TE), and 2) multi-modal education (MME). The MME arm builds upon the traditional curriculum at the medical school by providing a web-based instructional program, a role play, preceptor training, and a booster session. The hypotheses are that MME will outperform TE on observed 5As counseling skills on the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE); and MME will outperform TE on self-reported 5As counseling skills.
Smoking cessation improves mortality, even in patients with existing smoking-related morbidity. Telephone follow-up after smoking cessation counselling as been shown to be an important method to provide support to smokers and to improve quit rates, especially if three or more calls were used in addition to face-to-face counselling. While it is reasonable to assume that more counselling leads to better smoking cessation outcomes, little evidence exists over the amount of telephone follow-up counselling that is required for optimal and sustained abstinence. We aim to investigate if six-months of weekly telephone follow-up is superior to one-month of weekly telephone follow-up.
The study is to understand whether distribution of two different supplies of nicotine patches through a telephone quitline has an effect on quit rates. The two different supplies are four vs. eight (in two separate four-week mailings) weeks of nicotine patches. The hypothesis is that eight weeks will be slightly more efficacious but four weeks will be more cost-effective.
The long-term goal of this program of research is to disseminate an effective, brief computer-based intervention that can be readily integrated into HIV treatment settings to motivate tobacco quitline use among smokers living with HIV. The overall objective of this application is to develop this computer intervention, modify it based on initial piloting and feedback, and obtain preliminary data supporting the efficacy of the intervention. This will be accomplished by pursuing three specific aims: 1) to develop and conduct preliminary pilot testing (n=16) of a brief, computer-based intervention intended to motivate tobacco quitline use among cigarette smokers living with HIV (Computer Intervention to Motivate Engagement in Tobacco Quitline treatment; CI-METQ) and to develop and pilot (n=4) a computer-based, time matched nutrition education for PLWH control intervention (NC) equated for the offer of a tobacco quitline referral and 8 weeks of free nicotine patch for those who engage in quitline treatment, 2) to conduct a preliminary smoking cessation, randomized controlled trial (RCT) with 100 people living with HIV (PLWH) who smoke cigarettes, comparing CI-METQ vs. NC, with predictions that CI-METQ relative to NC will result in increased readiness, higher rates of tobacco treatment engagement, more quit smoking attempts and higher rates of 7-day point prevalence abstinence rates at 1-, 3- and 6-month follow-ups. Health-related quality of life over this period will also be examined, and 3) to examine CI-METQ's effects on key mechanisms during the computer session and their associations with tobacco treatment engagement and smoking outcomes at 1- and 3-month follow-ups.
Background: - Researchers want to see how well the QuitTXT text-message program helps smokers ages 18 29 stop smoking. This is part of a larger online stop-smoking program by the National Cancer Institute. The QuitTXT program is a 2-week countdown to the smoker s quit date with 6 weeks of follow-up messages. Program participants will receive texts on their cell phones, including tips, information, and motivational messages, and then fill out surveys. Objectives: - To study how well the QuitTXT program helps smokers ages 18 29 stop smoking. Eligibility: - Adults ages 18 29 who have smoked on at least 5 of the past 30 days and who want to stop smoking in the next 30 days. Design: - Participants will receive a certain number of text messages during the 8-week study. They will receive between 0 to 5 messages per day (or up to a total of 130 messages). - Participants will first fill out a survey about their smoking and quitting experiences. Then they will choose a date to quit smoking (a quit date ) between 2 and 3 weeks after this survey. - Participants will take four other surveys online, one during the program and three more after they ve completed the program. Each survey will take about 10 20 minutes and asks about their smoking habits and views on smoking and quitting. Each survey will be sent by email, with reminders sent by email or telephone. - Participants will receive an iTunes or Amazon gift card for completing each survey honestly.
