Filter by:The purpose of this study is to assess the sleep quality and quality of life of the study population.
Our study aims to build on emerging evidence showing relationships between gut health, sleep and brain functions. To achieve this, our study aims to test the feasibility of using non-pharmacological interventions: a psychoeducation-based intervention (enhanced sleep education - ESE) and a dietary supplement (Saffron extract), to improve sleep in older adults with insomnia complaints. Our study also aims to test the feasibility of using wearable and commercially available EEG headband technology to measure objective sleep quality in the home, which will allow for a reliable and ecologically more valid sleep research.
Single center, prospective, Open label study of sleep, pruritus and circadian function pre/post 12-weeks of dupilumab treatment in children 6-17 years old
Migraine is a common disabling disorder and its substantial burden is associated with considerable negative impact on quality of life. Several pharmacological treatments are available for migraine prophylaxis but insufficient efficacy and significant side effects preclude them being widely using in migraine treatment. Recently, growing evidences have suggested that migraines are closely associated with sleep and circadian rhythms. Sleep disturbance is well-known as one of the triggers for migraine episode, and too much sleep (i.e., sleeping more on weekend) can also trigger migraine attacks. In addition, shift-work or jet lag have been reported to be triggers in some migraines; regular and good sleep would benefit migraine. Intriguing, hypothalamus is thought to be migraine generator and sleep and circadian activity rhythm also under controlled by hypothalamus. The evidence suggests an influence of both sleep and the circadian system with migraine. In the past, clinical evidence has shown that light therapy can stabilize the sleep architecture and further improve insomnia related to circadian rhythm disorders. However, the beneficial effect of light therapy on migraine with sleep disturbance has not yet been determined. This randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study aim to: 1. Explore the clinical efficacy of bright light therapy for migraine prevention; 2. Explore the underlying molecular and biochemical mechanisms of light therapy on migraine prevention.
Assisted living residents who have sleep disturbances are at great risk of developing cognitive impairments. The identification of factors that increase sleep problems in this population is the first step towards improving sleep disorders and reducing and/or delaying the occurrence of cognitive impairments in this population. Physical activity has been proposed to improve sleep quality in older individuals, but there is currently no scientific evidence of how sleep mediates the relationship between physical activity and cognition in assisted living residents. This is a cross-sectional study that investigates the relationship between sleep quality, functional/physical capacity, and cognitive performance. Participants will be recruited through a non-probabilistic sampling method (convenience) as this is a feasibility study that aims to identify, for the first time, sleep disorders in assisted living residents using objective measures of sleep. Sleep quality will be measured with polysomnography, actigraphy, and questionnaire. Functional and physical capacity will be assessed through walking tasks and actigraphy. Cognitive tasks will be used to assess memory. This study will bring new insights into the factors that affect the quality of life and sleep in assisted living residents. The evidence-based knowledge acquired on-site will be translated and shared with the local and global scientific community to raise awareness of the factors that contribute to increasing institutionalization and dependent living. Results obtained from objective and subjective measures of sleep will be of great importance to develop specialized clinical expertise and behavioral interventions that will meet residents' needs.
This study study aims to examine relationships between sleep and mental health and well-being among a more heterogeneous sample of students and apply the REST intervention to this group to determine whether we can improve sleep in this group and whether changes in sleep are associated with improvements in mental health.
Sleep and rest are key elements in postoperative rehabilitation and recovery. There are complex relations between major surgery, sleep disturbance and complications. Major surgery leeds to severe postoperative sleep disturbances, initially reducing REM sleep time and disturbing the remaining sleep stages. Major surgery is again a risk factor for postoperative delirium and other cognitive impairment. The underlying mechanisms includes pain, opioid medication, sleep disturbances and neuroinflammation, along with external factors as noise during hospitalisation. The physiologic stress from sleep disturbances and sleep deprivation is associated with blood-brain barrier impairment, inflammation, decreased restitution, altered nociceptive function. Likewise, undiagnosed and untreated sleep apnea is a risk for postoperative complications and is itself affected by anesthesia and some analgesics (i.a. opioids). Fast-track surgery development has led to restitution period shortening, optimized pain management reducing opioid use, postoperative inflammatory stress response reduction and less delirium. Evolution of hip and knee arthroplasty(THA/TKA), organisation, optimized pain management and pharmacologic modification of inflammatory response by high dose steroid has permitted to perform these surgeries in an outpatient setting. Previous studies of fast-track THA/TKA using multimodal opioid-sparring analgesia, however neither using high dose steroids nor in an out patient setting, have demonstrated REM sleep period reduction from a normal range of 18% preoperatively to 1% postoperatively. However, changes in sleep architecture after THA/TKA in at setting attempting to minimise abnormal sleep by means of ambulatory surgery added to perioperative reduction of inflammatory response to surgery, pain and opioid use by high dose steroid, haven't been studied. The purpose of this study is to investigate how much an optimized ambulatory THA/TKA , reducing pain and inflammatory response to surgery and opioid use by high doses steroid can conserve the preoperative sleep architecture.
Sleep problems in patients with CLBP are a very common complication and is the most neglected part of the management. Though previous literature suggested that sleep problems need to be managed in patients with CLBP, no physical therapy or manual therapy techniques has been checked for their efficacy to manage the same. Therefore, there is a need to check the efficacy of various physical therapy and manual therapy techniques so that sleep problems associated with CLBP can be managed effectively by physical means. The main purpose of the study is to check the efficacy of tDCS and CST to improve sleep, pain and quality of life in patients with CLBP.
