Filter by:The goal of this study is to identify genetic changes associated with the initiation, progression, and treatment response of response of cutaneous and hematologic disorders using recently developed high-throughput sequencing technologies. The improved understanding of the genetic changes associated with cutaneous and hematologic disorders may lead to improved diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic options for these disorders.
In this study, the investigators will enroll patients who present to the emergency department with abscesses to the study. The patients will be randomly selected to either have the standard of care, which includes the standard drainage of the abscess and then usually a follow-up visit to recheck the wound, or to have the standard of care plus instructions to use a topical scrub of a soap called chlorhexidine once a day for five days and twice daily application of a topical antibiotic ointment called mupirocin to the nasal passages for five days. The investigators will then call back the patients at 7 days, 14 days (if in the treatment arm), 3 months and 6 months, to ask if they have had any recurrence of abscess formation. The study hypothesis is that the patients who have undergone the decontamination protocol will have fewer subsequent infections.
The purpose of this study is to estimate the incidence and severity of peristomal skin lesions and evaluate the progression of the peristomal skin condition at 8-15 days following application of the barrier.
This randomized, intra-patient comparative study is designed to investigate the combination regimen of 5-fluorouracil cream (5FU) and Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), versus PDT alone, for its ability to generate significantly elevated levels of the target photosensitizer, protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), in lesions of actinic keratoses (AKs) and to more effectively treat and prevent recurrence of AKs. The target population comprises patients with solid organ transplants (renal, hepatic), as well as normal (immunocompetent) subjects to control for possible influences of immunosuppression.
The primary object of this study is to provide clinical documentation for the New base plate significantly 'reduces the degree of Leakage' under the base plate compared to Standard Care base plates. The secondary objectives are to provide clinical documentation on several performance and safety parameters on the New base plate compared to Standard Care base plates. The primary hypothesis is that the New base plate significantly reduces degree of leakage under the base plate compared to Standard Care base plates. Each test period will last for two weeks. In addition to this there will be one week run-in period on New base plate. The data will be collected by investigator in the Case Report Form at the inclusion visit, cross-over visit and termination visit. Data will also be collected by the subject in a questionnaire during the two test periods. The subjects will change their base plates on per need basis and continue with their normal changing pattern in the entire study period. 100 subjects with ileostomy will be included in the study. The subjects will be recruited from Europe including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Germany and France.

Introduction: It is not an illness to have an ostomy, even though it is an indication of previous serious illness, such as cancer, which is the reason for approximately 80% of all ostomy operations. Ostomies can be divided into three categories: colostomy (large intestine), ileostomy (small intestine) and urostomy (urinary tract). All require surgical redirection of the intestine or urinary tract, allowing for elimination of urine and faeces by means of an opening in the abdominal wall. For the population included in this study, subject with an ileostomy, colitis ulcerosa is the main cause for an ileostomy where a surgical removal of the colon and rectum resulting in an ileostomy in theory cures the disease. It can be very challenging to live with an ostomy and modern ostomy products should make life as easy as possible for people with ostomies. Leakage and peristomal skin problems have been found to have a negative effect on the quality of life for people with ostomies. The skin problems are the reason for one out of three visits to ostomy nurses and occur much more frequently in people who have had ileostomies than in those who have had colostomies. It has been observed that the prevalence of peristomal skin problems is 21-60% among people who have ileostomies, 13-35% among those who have colostomies and 21-48% among those who have urostomies. Leakage from ostomies that comes into contact with the skin is thought to predispose the patient to peristomal skin problems. One investigation of peristomal skin problems found that 77% of cases were related to contact with faeces or urine. There are several reasons why leakage from an ostomy occurs, such as uneven peristomal area, improper handling of the ostomy product or a problematic ostomy (its formation, its location, retraction, prolapse or hernia). The ostomy may also change size with time, which can lead to leakage, if the ostomy products are not adapted accordingly. As a general rule, a check-up of the ostomy by an ostomy nurse or a doctor together with educational support can reduce these problems. Modern ostomy products should, however, also be constantly developed in order to lessen to the greatest extent possible the risk of leakage and associated inconveniences.
Breast reconstruction is a common procedure with over 86,000 breast reconstruction procedures performed in the United States in 2009. This is a 1.5-fold increase since 2007. Of these breast reconstructions, 65% use a tissue expander/implant technique. Although satisfactory results can be achieved with a single-stage technique, a two-stage approach is considered more reliable, allowing for precise positioning of the inframammary fold and an opportune time to perform a capsulotomy to increase the breast skin flap by releasing the soft tissue. The placement of the tissue expander and implant under the chest muscles is thought to minimize the incidence of capsular contracture, expander exposure, and in addition, produce acceptable aesthetic results. However, discomfort is often associated with this submuscular placement of a tissue expander or implant, specifically during the expansion phase. Patients undergoing immediate reconstruction using submuscular implants have been shown to have higher analgesic requirements and to have higher pain scores post-operatively, compared to non-reconstructed patients. An uncomfortable reconstruction can lead to under-filling of the expander, a longer expansion process, abandonment of reconstruction, and a compromised quality of life. The use of Botulinum Toxin A (Botox) injections into the chest muscles at the time of surgery may help ease the discomfort that is often associated with this procedure. The investigators propose a prospective double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial of patients undergoing tissue expander/implant reconstruction. The information gathered from this analysis will provide a greater understanding of the effects of Botox in the setting of two-stage tissue expander/implant breast reconstruction, with the goal to improve patient satisfaction and quality of life.
The purpose of this study is to: 1. Evaluate the efficacy of Adapalene gel 0.3% compared to Tretinoin Emollient cream 0.05%, reducing signs of cutaneous photoageing, measured trough photonumeric scale evaluation, investigator evaluation of global response to treatment and subject's evaluation of improvement. 2. Evaluate the safety and tolerability of Adapalene Gel 0.3%, compared to Tretinoin Emollient cream 0.05% during 24 weeks of treatment. The study has the clinical hypothesis that Adapalene Gel 0.3% is as effective as Tretinoin Emollient cream 0.05% in the treatment of cutaneous photoaging.
