The Effect and Mechanism of Self-compassion on Reducing Materialism

The current study provided an initial investigation of the effect of self-compassion on reducing materialism and explored the basic psychological needs and self-esteem as potential mechanisms. Two studies would be conducted. Study 1 explored the relationships among variables with cross-sectional data, to explore the relationship between self-compassion and materialism, and test the mediating role of basic psychological needs and self-esteem. Study 2 developed a new online self-help self-compassion intervention and conducted a randomized control trial (i.e., intervention group and waitlist group) to further explore the casual effect of self-compassion on materialism, with the mediating effect of basic psychological needs and self-esteem.

Better Together: an Online Physician Coaching Program for Medical Trainees

This is a single-institution randomized controlled trial. 101 female residents were recurited from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. They enrolled beginning in January 2021 and participated in the coaching program for 6 months via a web-based system. Participants were randomized into either the intervention or wait-list control arm. Participants in the intervention arm began the 6-month coaching program in January, 2021. Participants in the wait-list control arm have received no additional resources from the Better Together program between January and June 2021. The wait-list control group was invited to begin the 6-month coaching program in July 2021. In December 2021, participants from both the intervention and wait-list control groups will be invited to complete a 2nd post survey (identical to the post-survey from June 2021). There will be no incentive for completion of the 2nd post survey. Finally, the longitudinal effect of the program will be assessed by offering the same survey measuring wellbeing via various indices to the intervention arm at 6 months (1/2022), 12 months (7/2022) and 18 months (1/2023) after their intervention. Participation in this survey will be completely voluntary and not incentivized/compensated.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Metro Nashville Public School Employees

Stress, anxiety, and depression are common symptoms among public school teachers. Public school teachers are among the top professions reporting stress, anxiety, and depression. The causes are multifactorial and include work-related demands, challenges with students, limited resources, and compassion fatigue. Because of this, teachers are at risk of burnout and leaving or changing their profession. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a considerable impact on teachers due to disruptions in usual education delivery and ability to support students. Recent reports show poorer mental health and decreases in physical activity in teachers since the onset of the pandemic. Effective and implementable strategies are urgently needed to address poor mental health and to foster positive health characteristics in this population. Mindfulness programs decrease feelings of stress, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion. Additionally, mindfulness can improve self-compassion, which may be an important mediating factor in a teacher population. Prior work has shown an inverse relationship between self-compassion and burnout. Currently, there are few studies investigating whether building self-compassion can reduce burnout in public school teachers. The investigators will explore therelationship between participation in a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course and changes in burnout, self-compassion, and other whole person health measures in an educator population. The overall objective of this open pilot study is to examine the feasibility and acceptability of an 8-week remote, group-based MBSR program delivered over Zoom for Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) personnel reporting elevated stress, anxiety, and/or depressive symptoms. Our pilot study results will contribute to the evidence on MBSR in a public-school employee population and inform strategies to optimize implementation of our remote MBSR program within the Vanderbilt Health at MNPS system.

App-Based Mindfulness Meditation for People of Color Who Experience Race-Related Stress

In the United States, people of color (POC) are disproportionally affected by stressors related to race/ethnicity compared with their non-Latinx White (NLW). Considering POC exposed to race-related stress are at high risk of developing a mental health disorder, there is a clear need for treatments that allow individuals to cope effectively with these stressors. Among many evidence-based treatments available, mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) may be particularly well suited to help POC cope. MBIs are hypothesized to be effective via increases in mindfulness and self-compassion, as well as reductions in experiential avoidance, rumination, and emotion suppression. Despite their effectiveness, MBIs rarely reach POC. As such, innovative strategies such as self-directed app-based intervention may reduce the treatment gap. Considering the lack of research examining the effectiveness of MBIs among POC, especially those who experience elevated levels of race-related stress, this study will employ a randomized control trial (RCT) approach to examine whether receiving an app-based MBI engages the hypothesized mechanisms of change (i.e., mindfulness, self-compassion, experiential avoidance, rumination, emotion suppression) among POC. Similarly, the study will test whether the intervention leads to decreases in the negative mental health outcomes more often associated with exposure to race-related stress (i.e., stress, anxiety, depression). Acceptability, adherence, and satisfaction also will be analyzed to explore whether a non-culturally adapted MBI is still relevant for POC who face race-related stress. Results from this trial will contribute to the nascent data on MBI acceptability and effectiveness with POC. To the investigators' knowledge, this study will also be the first to include a sample of POC recruited based on elevated levels of race-related stress, a high-risk population that is not commonly targeted in MBI research.

Evaluation of the Efficacy and Mechanisms of Change of Compassion Cultivation Training in Medical Students

The aim of this randomized, waitlist controlled trial is to examine the efficacy of the Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT©) in reducing psychological distress (i.e., stress, anxiety and depression) and burnout symptoms while improving psychological well-being medical students. The second goal of the study is to examine whether mindfulness and compassion-related variables as well as emotional-cognitive emotional regulation processes mediate the psychological distress and well-being changes. The effects of the CCT© program will be measured by means of self-report questionnaires involving different domains (mindfulness, compassion, distress, and well-being measures) at different time points (pre-intervention, inter-session assessment, post-intervention, 2-month and 6-month follow-up).

FoCo: Evaluating a Training to Increase Attention and Awareness of Healthcare Professionals

Introduction: A significant increase in the risk of injury and illness at work has been associated with fatigue, stress, haste, distraction, emergency situations, excessive noise, complex procedures and anger among other factors. Most of these factors are related to the lack of attention to work in progress, which can be improved by training attention and awareness during daily activities, as it would encourage a resumption of focus on the task at hand and the possible risks associated with it. . The primary objective of this project is to evaluate the effects of training to increase attention and awareness for daily activities - FoCo - outlined for healthcare professionals in their work schedule. Method: Health professionals from 18 to 60 years of age, of both sexes, will participate in the study, working in 3 units, one in the care of patients in a Emergency Care Unit (UPA), in an Elderly Residential and in a Center. Intensive Care (ICU). In the UPA will be included 25 professionals in group A and 25 in group B; In the Residential of Elderly, 40 professionals will be included in group A and 40 professionals in group B; In the ICU will be included 30 professionals in group A and 30 in group B. They will be randomized in both groups. Group A will receive training in the FoCo program and group B will be a waiting group. After a period of one month, group B will receive training in FoCo and group A will be instructed to continue on their own to apply FoCo in their daily lives (Fig.1). Participants will be evaluated before, after one month and after two months. Expected Outcomes: After training, an increase in mindful, attention and awareness scale, self-compassion scale, positive affect, speed of digit and symbol test is expected. It is also expected to reduce negative affects, perceived stress and an increased perception of possible incidents.

Impact of Parental Perfectionistic Cognitions Self-compassion Intervention Effects on Shame in Child Health Context

Parents of children with long-term health conditions (LTCs) can experience shame related to parenting. Whilst self-compassion interventions (SCIs) can reduce parental shame, this has not been studied with parents of children with LTCs. Perfectionistic cognitions may also moderate the effects of SCIs. This study will test an online SCI with parents of children with type 1 diabetes, epilepsy or asthma. Parents will complete online questionnaires pre- and post a SCI/control intervention. Hypotheses will be tested using analysis of covariance and moderation analysis. Findings will enhance knowledge of vulnerability factors to distress for parents of children with LTCs, and inform interventions.
