Peripheral Stem Cell Transplantation Followed By Infusion of White Blood Cells in Treating Patients With AIDS-Related Lymphoma

Delayed Donor Leukocyte Infusions in Patients Receiving Allogeneic PBSC Following Conditioning With Non-myeloablative Regimen for AIDS-Related Lymphoma (NHL and HD)

RATIONALE: Donor peripheral stem cell transplantation may be able to replace immune cells that were destroyed by chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Sometimes the transplanted cells are rejected by the body's normal tissues. Treatment with donor white blood cells may prevent this from happening. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of donor peripheral stem cell transplantation followed by infusions of donor white blood cells in treating patients who have AIDS-related lymphoma.

Acupressure to Treat Nausea and Vomiting in HIV/AIDS Patients

The Acupressure Study

The purpose of this study is to see whether acupressure (acupuncture using pressure applied by the hands instead of needles) can help nausea and vomiting in persons with HIV/AIDS.

Valganciclovir in Patients With CMV Retinitis and AIDS Who Cannot Take Drugs by Injection

Open-Label Safety Study of Valganciclovir in Patients With CMV Retinitis and AIDS Who Have Complications Due to IV Treatment

The purpose of this study is to make valganciclovir available, before it is approved for marketing, to HIV-infected patients who have cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis (eye infection) and cannot take drugs by injection. This study also will look at the safety of using valganciclovir as starting and/or ongoing therapy. CMV can cause serious AIDS-related infections in patients with HIV. Drugs that are effective against CMV eye infections can be given only by injection; this calls for a thin tube to be placed into a vein in the chest so that the patient is not put through getting too many needle sticks. An experimental drug, valganciclovir, is similar to 1 of these approved drugs, ganciclovir, but is more convenient and easier to use since it can be taken by mouth. Once in the body, valganciclovir changes to ganciclovir. Studies have shown that valganciclovir tablets can result in the same level of ganciclovir in the blood as ganciclovir injection.

Zidovudine Plus Interleukin-2 and Ganciclovir in Treating Patients With AIDS-Related Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma

A Phase II Trial Of Induction Therapy With Zidovudine, Interleukin-2, And Ganciclovir In The Treatment Of HIV Positive Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma

RATIONALE: Antiviral drugs such as zidovudine and ganciclovir act against viruses and may be an effective treatment for HIV. Interleukin-2 may stimulate a person's white blood cells to kill lymphoma cells. Combining these treatments may be effective in treating AIDS-related primary central nervous system lymphoma. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combining zidovudine, ganciclovir, and interleukin-2 in treating patients who have AIDS-related primary central nervous system lymphoma.

Nutrition Intervention in AIDS Wasting

There are no guidelines for appropriate nutritional management of weight loss or wasting in HIV infection. Some treatments may increase weight, but without improving muscle mass or quality of life. In this clinical trial AIDS patients with wasting are randomized to one of three nutritional strategies and studied over a 12-week period: 1) optimal oral nutrition with counseling and protein and calorie supplementation, and a placebo pill; 2) optimal oral nutrition with the oral androgen, oxandrolone at 20 mg daily; and 3) optimal oral nutrition with progressive resistance training (PRT). In all participants, dietary intervention is maximized by weekly personalized counseling to address individual issues and concerns. Two primary outcomes are assessed: thigh muscle mass and quality of life. Our findings can be used to develop guidelines for standards of nutritional care among AIDS patient with the wasting syndrome.

AIDS Wasting in Women: Anabolic Effects of Testosterone

The study is a 6 month, placebo-controlled study of transdermal testosterone for women with HIV-associated weight loss. Women with AIDS wasting have been found to have low testosterone levels. This study is designed to test the efficacy of physiologic testosterone dosing to improve weight, muscle mass and quality of life indices, including energy level, appetite and libido, in androgen deficient women with AIDS wasting. After 6 months, all women receive open label transdermal testosterone for an additional 6 months.

Chemotherapy Followed By Peripheral Stem Cell Transplantation in Treating Patients With Recurrent or Refractory AIDS-Related Lymphoma

Pilot Study of the Safety and Feasibility of Autologous Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation for Patients With Relapsed AIDS-Related Lymphoma

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of chemotherapy followed by peripheral stem cell transplantation in treating patients who have recurrent or refractory AIDS-related lymphoma.
