OTC Hearing Aid and MCI

Over-the-counter Hearing Aids and Mild Cognitive Impairment

The goal of this study is to better understand if, in patients with mild to moderate hearing loss who are also experiencing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), Over-the-Counter (OTC) hearing aids: 1. improve communication 2. Whether the magnitude of benefit depends on the patient's level of cognitive disability, 3. Whether alternative remediation (such as targeted communication strategies) offer similar benefits. Participants and a communication partner will be randomized into an OTC first or Communication Strategies first arm, where participants will receive communication strategy information customized for those with cognitive impairment.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Adherence and Depression (CBT-AD) Among HIV/AIDS Patients

A Randomized Control Trial of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Adherence and Depression (CBT-AD) Among HIV/AIDS Patients on Follow up at Mattu Karl and Bedele Hospital, 2019

Depression is highly comorbid with HIV/ AIDS and is associated with worse poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and potentially to long-term immune functioning. Cognitive behavioral therapy may solve these problem.

Evaluation of New Head-mounted Visual Aids Among Patients With Low Vision

Evaluation of New Head-mounted Visual Aids Among Patients With Low Vision

Glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinitis pigmentosa, RP, diabetic retinopathy (DR) are the most common blinding eye diseases in the world. Vision and visual field are often severely impaired, quality of life is reduced, and personal and family burdens are heavy. This kind of low vision people, can use visual AIDS and other instruments for visual rehabilitation training, maximize the function of residual vision, improve the quality of life. Beyes, HOLA, Acesight and OXSIGHT are among the latest eyeglasses devices that are expected to improve the quality of life for people with low vision. This research group intends to recruit advanced patients with primary glaucoma, AMD, RP, DR and other common blinding eye diseases who visited Zhongshan Ophthalmology Center of Sun Yat-sen University from June 2021 to December 2022 to study the changes of visual function and quality of life after wearing this new type of head-worn visual aids, and analyze relevant factors combined with clinical data. To evaluate the effect and influencing factors of the new head-mounted visual AIDS on patients, and provide theoretical basis for subsequent clinical research.

Effects of Decision Aids on the Participation of South Asian Women in Cervical Cancer Screening

Effects of Decision Aids on the Participation of South Asian Women in Cervical Cancer Screening: A Randomised Controlled Trial

Objectives: To examine the effects of linguistically appropriate decision aids on decisional conflicts, risk perception, clarity of values, screening decisions and screening uptake among South Asian women in Hong Kong Design and subjects: A randomised controlled trial. A sample of 270 South Asian women aged 25-64 will be recruited to one of the two intervention groups or control group. Instruments: A survey will be conducted to collect data on the variables of concern (decisional conflicts, risk perception, clarity of values, screening decision and screening uptake). Interventions: Ethnically match community health workers (CHWs) will deliver the printed or mobile application decision aids to intervention group participants and briefly explain how to use the decision aid. The participants will choose a time and place of their convenience to read the decision aid. The participants will be contacted by CHWs within 2 weeks and asked if they have experienced any problems. Navigation assistance will be given as requested. Main outcome measures: Decisional conflicts, risk perception, clarity of values, screening decision and uptake. Data analysis: The repeated-measure outcomes of risk perception, clarity of values, decisional conflicts and screening decision will be compared between the three groups while adjusting for the stratifying variable (ethnicity) using a generalised estimating equation model, and a multivariable logistic regression with adjustment for ethnicity will be used to compare the screening uptake of the three groups. Expected results: The decision aid will clarify the participants' values and help them to make screening decisions and increase the uptake.

A Preliminary Study on Digital Learning Aids for Special Children With TRIZ and 3D Printing Technology

A Preliminary Study on the Demand and Design of Digital Learning Aids for Special Children With TRIZ and 3D Printing Technology

During the transition phase from early intervention to primary education (4.5 years to 8.11 years), children with special needs may encounter difficulties in using digital learning media. The investigators intend to apply the TRIZ analysis method to enhance children's participation in learning. Additionally, the investigators plan to design a preliminary model of learning aids and conduct a trial.

INcorporating VoIce acTivated Communication Aids Into Everyday Communication - INVITE

INcorporating VoIce acTivated Communication Aids Into Everyday Communication

Dysarthria is a speech disorder resulting in speech that is slow, slurred and difficult to understand, limiting a person's opportunities to study, work, and develop relationships. People with dysarthria often use communication aids to help them to communicate creating spoken messages using a keyboard, touchscreen or joystick. Communication aids can increase independence but are often too slow to keep pace with normal conversation. Developments in speech recognition technology have led to apps which can learn to recognise a set of words or sounds spoken by the individual with dysarthria, and connect these with a clear spoken output. The investigator's previous research provides some evidence that these voice input communication apps may be faster than traditional communication aids. This study aims to find out who can benefit from this technology, and what support they will need to use it successfully. This information can be used by professionals involved in providing communication aids, and will help the investigators to plan further research into their effectiveness. This research has two phases: 1. 20-30 individuals with dysarthria will be asked to use a voice input communication app for 6 months. The investigator's will collect information on whether VocaTempo improves their communication, and helps participants to reach their goals. 2. Focus groups will be held with professionals involved in providing and supporting people with communication aids, to understand factors affecting their ability to provide the support identified as needed in part 1 of the research. The investigators have a panel of communication aid users, who are advising and contributing throughout the study, for example, helping the investigators to identify informal support networks to recruit participants from. The investigators will let people know about the findings through support groups used by people with dysarthria, publications read by people involved in providing communication aids, and academic papers and conferences.

Direct-to-Consumer Hearing Aids and Listening Effort

Investigation of Direct-to-consumer Hearing Aids on Conversation Efficiency and Listening Effort

The aim of this proposed project is to understand whether direct to consumer (DTC) hearing aids programmed to individual hearing losses, can reduce listening effort for effective communication. If DTC aids can provide benefits beyond amplification, then they could be an affordable option to reduce barriers to care and improve hearing aid uptake in adults with hearing loss.
