Effectiveness of Bracing in Preventing Scoliosis in Children With Spinal Cord Injury

Start date: June 2005
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The purpose of this study is to determine whether full-time high dose prophylactic bracing (23 hours or more per day) is more effective than low dose bracing (12 hours or less per day) in preventing or delaying spinal curve progression in children with scoliosis after spinal cord injury.

NCT ID: NCT00207857 Withdrawn - Scoliosis Clinical Trials

Test-Retest Reliability of Pulmonary Function Tests in Patients With Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy

Start date: March 2004
Phase: N/A
Study type: Observational

Nearly all patients with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) have scoliosis. Posterior instrumented spinal fusion, which is a surgery to correct scoliosis, has been shown to improve quality of life and satisfaction of both parents and families. The progressive muscular weakness leads to the development of scoliosis soon after the child has become unable to walk. The muscular weakness and scoliosis also affect the pulmonary function of these children. Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT) have been used to determine "pulmonary fitness" prior to surgery as a way to determine how well or if the child will tolerate surgery. Children with poor results on the PFT are determined to be too fragile to tolerate such a large operation. The physicians conducting this study feel that the PFT may be inaccurate and that this may not be the best single test to determine "pulmonary fitness". The physicians conducting the study think things like the time of day the study is done, how tired you are when you complete the test, and how well you understand the test may affect the results of the test.

NCT ID: NCT00155545 Completed - Scoliosis Clinical Trials

Influence of Leg Length Discrepancy on the Spinal Shape and Biomechanics in Functional and Idiopathic Scoliosis Patients

Start date: September 2005
Phase: Phase 1
Study type: Interventional

The purposes of this study are to use motion analysis techniques to study the biomechanical interactions between the spine and the lower limbs in scoliosis patients with or without leg length discrepancy (LLD) during activity; to investigate the effects of correction of LLD: using foot orthosis on the functional scoliotic spinal curve and motion during functional activity; and to test whether idiopathic scoliosis without LLD can be improved by artificially creating a leg length discrepancy with a foot orthosis.

NCT ID: NCT00154505 Completed - Spinal Cord Injury Clinical Trials

Effects of Lateral Trunk Support on Spinal Alignment in Spinal Cord Injured Persons

Start date: September 2002
Phase: Phase 1
Study type: Interventional

The effects of lateral trunk supports (LTS) in special seating on the spinal alignment of 17 spinal cord injured (SCI) subjects with scoliosis were studied using bi-planar radiographs. The LTS improved significantly the functional scoliotic spinal alignment in the frontal and sagittal planes regardless of the severity of scoliosis.
