Effect of Olanzapine on Sleep Electroencephalogram (EEG) in Schizophrenia Patients

Acute and sub-chronic administration of olanzapine has shown a favourable effect on the sleep disturbances in previously medicated schizophrenia patients with predominantly negative symptoms. The present study will be carried out to clarify the effect of olanzapine on polysomnographic profiles of schizophrenia patients in an acute phase of illness after controlling for the drug effects.

CSP #572 - Genetics of Functional Disability in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Illness

The purpose of this study is to detect genetic associations for the development of schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar illness (BP) by comparing Veterans with these diseases to "psychiatrically healthy" Veterans from Veterans Health Administration medical centers. In addition, the genetic basis for functional capacity and disability in Veterans affected with SZ and BP will be assessed, as will genetic predictors of suicidality and tardive dyskinesia. Finally, we will also establish a repository which allows for future genomic studies related to SZ, BP, and related disorders or sequelae.

Lurasidone (lurasidone HCl) is a novel psychotropic agent that is being developed as a potential new antipsychotic treatment for patients with schizophrenia. Switching between antipsychotic medications is common in the treatment of schizophrenia. The purpose of this study is to characterize the long-term safety and tolerability of lurasidone in subjects with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and to allow for continued treatment for subjects completing the core study (D1050289-NCT01143077).

Lurasidone (lurasidone HCl) is a novel psychotropic agent that is being developed as a potential new antipsychotic treatment for patients with schizophrenia. Switching between antipsychotic medications is common in the treatment of schizophrenia. The current study is designed to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of switching clinically stable, but symptomatic outpatients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder from their preswitch antipsychotic medication to lurasidone, over a period of 6 weeks.

Long-term Extension Trial of Asenapine in Subjects With Schizophrenia (Study P06125)

This is a multi-site, randomized fixed-flexible dose long-term study of asenapine in participants with schizophrenia. The first six weeks of the study will be double-blind and the remainder of the study will be open label. Participants in this study consist of participants who have completed the preceding short-term study (P06124 [NCT01098110]), who meet the inclusion criteria and wish to continue receiving study drug, and whom the investigators have deemed eligible for study participation. Participants who were on placebo twice daily (BID) in core trial P06124 will get placebo for the first 2 weeks then 5 mg asenapine BID for the next 4 weeks of double blind treatment, and will be re-randomized after week 6 to asenapine 5 mg BID or asenapine 10 mg BID. Participants who were on asenapine 5 mg BID in core trial P06124 will be re-randomized after Week 6 to asenapine 5 mg BID or asenapine 10 mg BID. Participants who were on asenapine 10 mg BID in core trial P06124 will be re-randomized after Week 6 to asenapine 5 mg BID or asenapine 10 mg BID. After re-randomization, drug will be administered open-label for 46 weeks. During this period dose is flexible can be adjusted using dose options of 5 and 10 mg BID for efficacy and tolerability.

Effects of Ketamine and Risperidone on Cognition

The primary objective of this study is: • To determine the effects of ketamine, which blocks the ion-channel gated by the NMDA receptor, on performance of cognitive tasks and the extent to which these effects can be reversed by the dopamine receptor antagonist, risperidone. The secondary objectives of this study are: - To establish whether patients with schizophrenia are able to reliably complete the biomarker test battery and to assess whether their responses are similar to healthy volunteers treated with ketamine. - To establish a multi-site recruitment and assessment capacity based on shared Standard Operating Procedures across three study centres.

The Evaluation of Therapeutic Efficacy on the Integrated Group Psychotherapy for Patients With Schizophrenia

Although the patients with schizophrenia can be treated with new generation of antipsychotics medication, additional approaches are necessary to improve schizophrenics' cognitive functions, interpersonal relationships as well as social adjustment. When some of patients return to community, they expose to practical pressure that contribute to worsen and relapse of disease. That further damages patient's cognitive functions. Integrated Psychological Therapy(IPT) on treating schizophrenia has dramatic improvement in recent years; it has formed structured treatment gradually on relieving illusion, hallucination as well as negative symptoms. This study aims at conducting 12-week structured IPT group therapy. The intended subjects are patients, met with DSM-Ⅳ-TR diagnosis of schizophrenia, from community, outpatient and inpatient service. The overall treatments are designed to provide 1-2 hours weekly group therapy which focuses on relieving illusions, hallucination, and negative symptoms. Patients' cognitive functions, ability of emotional adjustment and interpersonal relationship would be evaluated in pre-test and post-test to indicate whether the significant difference exists. There is a controlled group, in which patients who still receive treatment as usual (TAU). The study also compares the evaluation results between IPT group and TAU group, hoping to develop the therapeutic framework for Taiwan people with schizophrenia.

Patient Guided Psychiatric Admissions

To meet the requirement for increased patient involvement, several Community Mental Health Centres (CMHC) have initiated a service called "patient-guided admissions". The investigators will compare a group with "patient guided admission/self-referral to inpatient beds" with a group having treatment as usual. It is expected that patients in the intervention group will experience more increased feeling of coping (patient activation) after 4 months and 12 months as a result of participating in "patient-guided admissions" than patients getting treatment as usual. In addition the total number of inpatient days either in the CMHC, psychiatric hospital or community rehabilitation centre is expected to be clearly lower in the intervention group than in the 'treatment-as-usual' group during one year after intake. Also the number of involuntary admissions either as inpatient or outpatient will be significant lower in the intervention group than the 'treatment-as-usual' group.The number of admissions in CMHC and psychiatric hospital, as well as the number of outpatient consultations in primary care, CMHC and psychiatric hospitals, will be lower in the intervention group than in the 'treatment-as-usual' group. Patients in the intervention group will experience improved mental health, increased feeling of coping (patient activation) and increased experience of recovery after 4 months and 12 months as a result of participating in "patient-guided admissions".
