RATIONALE: Donepezil and EGb761 may be effective in improving neurocognitive function (such as thinking, attention, concentration, and memory) and may improve quality of life in patients who have undergone radiation therapy to the brain. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well donepezil or EGb761 works in improving neurocognitive function in patients who have undergone radiation therapy for primary brain tumor or brain metastases.
RATIONALE: Moving a salivary gland out of the area that will undergo radiation therapy may protect the gland from side effects of radiation therapy and may prevent xerostomia (dry mouth). PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of salivary gland surgery in preventing xerostomia in patients who are undergoing radiation therapy for head and neck cancer.
RATIONALE: Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Giving radiation therapy in different ways may cause less damage to normal tissue, prevent or lessen mouth dryness, and may help patients live more comfortably. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining chemotherapy with radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of specialized radiation therapy techniques with or without chemotherapy in reducing mouth dryness in patients who have nasopharyngeal cancer.
RATIONALE: Sildenafil may be effective in helping patients who have undergone treatment for prostate cancer to have an erection for sexual activity and may improve sexual satisfaction and quality of life. PURPOSE: Randomized clinical trial to study the effectiveness of sildenafil in treating erectile dysfunction in patients who have undergone radiation therapy and hormone therapy for prostate cancer in clinical trial RTOG-9910.
RATIONALE: It is not yet known whether zinc sulfate is effective in preventing the loss of ability to taste food in cancer patients who are undergoing radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to determine the effectiveness of zinc sulfate in preventing loss of sense of taste in patients who are undergoing radiation therapy for head and neck cancer.
RATIONALE: Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Drugs such as melatonin may make tumor cells more sensitive to radiation therapy and may protect normal cells from the side effects of radiation therapy. PURPOSE: Randomized phase II trial to determine the effectiveness of combining melatonin with radiation therapy in treating patients who have brain metastases.
RATIONALE: Monoclonal antibodies can locate tumor cells and either kill them or deliver tumor-killing substances to them without harming normal cells. PURPOSE: Phase I/II trial to study the effectiveness of radiolabeled monoclonal antibody plus pentetic acid calcium in patients with leukemia.
RATIONALE: Cevimeline may be effective in treating dry mouth that is caused by radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. It is not yet known if cevimeline is more effective than no therapy in treating dry mouth caused by radiation therapy. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to determine the effectiveness of cevimeline in treating patients who have dryness of the mouth caused by radiation therapy for head and neck cancer.
