Filter by:Cervical cancer of early stage is treated mainly by radical resection and (or) radiotherapy. And pelvic lymphocyst is one of the most common adverse events of radical resection. The aim of this study is to compare observation with radiation on pelvic lymphocyst of cervical cancer patients after radical resection, for incidence of adverse events and local recurrence rate.
Concurrent chemo-radiotherapy followed by intracavitary brachytherapy is standard of care for patients with locally advanced cervical cancer. Although curative, this treatment is challenging and leaves a significant proportion of women with severe toxicity, negatively impacting their quality of life. Although most recover over time, a proportion of women do not. Therefore, evaluation of quality of life becomes increasingly more important as cancer specific outcomes improve. One such method is through patient-reported outcomes (PROs), defined as "any report coming directly from the patient about a health condition and its treatment." This prospective multi-institutional study, involving the Princess Margaret (PM), Odette Regional Cancer Centre(ORCC) and Royal Victoria Regional Health Center (RVH), will assess to feasibility and acceptability of integrating a cervical cancer specific PRO measurement tool into clinical practice. Cervical cancer patients coming for follow-up appointments will be asked to complete the EORTC QLQ-CX24, a validated cervical cancer specific PRO questionnaire. At the end of the study period, Feedback Forms will be completed by participating patients and health care providers to obtain their perspectives regarding the feasibility and acceptability of incorporating the instrument into clinical practice. Future directions include designing an electronic platform and expanding its use in cervical cancer clinics provincially and nationally. The data collected should help identify disease-related symptoms, treatment-related toxicities, facilitate patient-physician communication, shared treatment planning and target intervention strategies.
Immunotherapy includes a class of medication called checkpoint inhibitors, which are a relatively new medication therapy for many types of cancer which are metastatic, meaning it has spread to other parts of the body.Immune therapy medication may be given safely with radiation treatment, and in rare cases it may even make radiotherapy more effective. When radiation therapy is given in the "palliative" setting it is given to treat pain/discomfort and not necessarily shrink or get rid of the tumour. Palliative radiotherapy may be given for many reasons, but common examples include painful bone or liver tumours, brain metastases, or symptoms from a chest tumour such as feeling breathless, cough, or bleeding. Palliative radiotherapy is usually given in smaller amounts and less frequently than other types of radiation therapy. Because checkpoint inhibitors are relatively new there is not a huge amount of evidence looking at how patients respond when the treatments are combined, or in which patients immune therapy may make radiation therapy even more effective. This study is looking at the way patients who are on or about to start immune therapy and who have been recommended for palliative radiotherapy, respond to the combination of these two treatments. The purpose of this study is to describe the treatment outcomes in patients with cancer that has spread who are managed with a combination of immune therapy medication and radiotherapy. This research is being done because there is limited information about the outcomes of combined immune therapy and radiotherapy treatment from a patient's perspective, but also in terms of which patients may have a better response to combined treatment. In particular, the study aims to describe how combined treatment affects cancer not only in the area where radiotherapy is given, but also outside the part of the body that receives radiotherapy (which is called "abscopal" effect).
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is currently one of the standard diagnostic imaging methods used to diagnose tumor stage before treatment in the Radiation Oncology Department. It is also used to check responses to radiation after treatment. However, MRI isn't traditionally used in planning for radiation treatment or in checking treated tumor and tissue changes during radiation treatment. The goal is to find out the possible benefits of MRI imaging techniques in these settings of radiation treatment. The research aims are to study the possibility of using devices with new abilities such as the MR-Linac. The MR-Linac combines a radiation treatment machine with a diagnostic MRI scanner. This device will improve the quality of MRI-guided radiation treatment. The MR-Linac has functions that are currently not available in other combined imaging and radiation delivery devices. The MR-Linac does not provide additional imaging capabilities that are not currently available in other imaging devices. Participating in this study would NOT change the current treatment plans, this will allow the investigators to use the MRI methods in research and future patient care.
Prostate cancer is the second most incident cancer among male population worldwide. Radiation therapy by itself or along with surgery and chemotherapy are the main treatments for prostate cancer however prostate cancer cells are only modestly responsive or even unresponsive to the cytotoxic effects of radiotherapy. Recently some in vitro and in vivo studies showed radiosensitizing and radioprotective effects for curcumin. No clinical trial has been done in this area and it is not yet known whether radiation therapy is more effective with or without curcumin supplements in treating patients with prostate cancer.
The purpose of this study is to establish on the market and to clinically evaluate a new strategy of treatment for patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer using deformable repositioning of 4D imaging.
Survivors of Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) are known to have an increased risk of developing late treatment sequelae such as cardiovascular events due to coronary artery disease. At present no active screening is performed in these patients since it is not known whether screening and subsequent treatment by means of revascularization is effective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular events in symptomatic individuals. In the trial the efficacy and therapeutic consequences of screening for coronary artery diasease by multi-slice CT (MSCT) among asymptomatic HL survivors will be evaluated.
