Investigating Psychosocial Predictors & Employment Outcomes of Enhanced IPS Intervention

The purpose of this cohort study, using an existing database, is to seek to describe the relationship between psychosocial factors (independent variables) and employment outcomes (dependent variables) in a population of people with complex mental health problems receiving evidence-based supported employment (EBSE) augmented with theory-driven occupational therapy interventions. The intention is to understand the predictive nature of psychosocial factors on the positive outcome of success in achieving paid employment. The Worker role interview (WRI) is routinely used in the research site; an National health Service (NHS) occupational therapy led vocational rehabilitation delivering EBSE service for people with complex mental health problems. An existing database of initial assessments and employment outcomes is available for investigation.

The Seattle Social Development Project: An Implementation of the Raising Healthy Children Intervention

The Seattle Social Development Project (SSDP) included a three-part intervention for teachers, parents, and students in grades 1 to 6. It was a universal prevention program that was tested in elementary schools serving children from high crime urban areas. The intervention trained teachers in proactive classroom management, interactive teaching, and cooperative learning. SSDP also offered training to parents in child behavior management, academic support, and skills to reduce risks for drug use. It provided training to children designed to affect interpersonal problem solving and refusal skills. These interventions were designed to reduce risks and increase protection at the individual, peer, family and school levels. The package of interventions was guided theoretically by the social development model. We hypothesized that training teachers to teach and manage their classrooms in ways that promote bonding to school, training parents to manage their families in ways that promote bonding to family and to school, and providing children with training in skills for social interaction would positively affect children's attitudes toward school, behavior at school, and academic achievement. These methods further sought to reduce children's opportunities and rewards for antisocial involvement. We thought that these changes would, in turn, set children on a different developmental trajectory observable in higher school achievement and fewer health-risk behaviors later in adolescence.

Norwalk Feasibility Study

The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) to examine the feasibility of the Drop-In model of Family Nurture Intervention (FNI); and 2) to collect pilot data concerning the mother's response to the Drop-In model of FNI and short term effects of participation. Feasibility of the Program will be measured through costs, staffing, space availability, and uptake. Participation in the Drop-In entails weekly visits for FNI. The investigators hypothesize that the Family Nurture Intervention will show feasibility through attendance and positive response to the Drop-In format. The investigators also expect the Family Nurture Intervention to improve mother's perceived well-being and mother-child emotional connection.

Mindfulness Mobile App to Reduce Adolescent Substance Use

Substance-abusing youth - especially those who are involved in the juvenile justice system - are at higher risk than nonusers for mental health problems, including depression, conduct problems, personality disorders, suicidal thoughts, attempted suicide, and completed suicide. The proposed Phase II project aims to develop and test the efficacy of a mobile app, called Rewire, that is geared toward helping high risk adolescent substance users reduce or quit their substance use. The Rewire app is based on the primary substance use cessation components tested in our previous work with juvenile justice-involved adolescents and on intervention components shown to be central to smoking cessation; it applies a mindfulness approach as the guiding framework for the intervention.

Effectiveness of Behavioral Preschool Teacher Training for Externalizing

A cluster randomized controlled pre-post effectiveness trial of behavioral preschool teacher training (BPTT) delivered in a practitioner assisted group format for children with externalizing behavior problems. Preschools were randomized to either intervention in 25 preschools or as 22 waiting list control preschools, where teachers in preschool classes with the target child or children were program receivers. Participants were 100 target children 3-5 years old together with 72 enrolled preschool teachers and 83 parents as informants of behavioral outcomes after a five months period of implementation (at six months). The intervention was part of the Swedish evidence-based parent and teacher training programs (Comet) for children and youth with elevated externalizing behavior, and here an adapted version was tried in preschool for the first time. Also investigated was eventual generalized effects to the children's homes and improved social competence as an intermediate mechanism for reduced problem behavior. Effects of implementation fidelity in addition to social acceptability and relevance, such as reliable change, was investigated as well.

Neural Mechanisms of Cannabinoid-impaired Decision-Making in Emerging Adults

Emerging adults are a particularly vulnerable group for experiencing the immediate and potentially lifelong negative impacts of habitual cannabis use, and trends suggest that cannabis use disorder (CUD) will soon escalate in this population. The proposed research will combine clinical pharmacology, non-invasive brain stimulation, and neuroimaging techniques to establish the brain mechanisms of cannabinoid-impaired decision-making processes in emerging adults with CUD. Results from this project will inform CUD prevention/treatment efforts in this high-risk group and address a growing public health concern.

Virtual Reality to Improve Social Perspective Taking

This project will examine how virtual reality treatment that provides users with the alternate perspective of a virtual interpersonal interaction impacts psychological and neurobiological markers of social perspective taking in children with a disruptive behavior disorder. The investigators anticipate that experiencing a virtual encounter from a counterpart's point-of-view improves a child's perspective taking and alters brain function related to imagining another person's pain.
