Periodontal disease is highly prevalent dental disease especially, in developing and underdeveloped countries affecting more or less 80% of the population. For the prevention of this highly prevalent dental affliction, still no effective and practical preventive measures are available which can reduce its high prevalence rate though, lot of research work is going on.

Effect of Arthrospira Platensis (Spirulina) as an Adjunct to Scaling and Root Planing on Salivary Antioxidant Levels in Chronic Periodontitis Subjects

Introduction- Oxidative stress plays a causative role in pathogenesis of periodontal disease. It has been reported that Spirulina platensis or its active ingredient C phycocyanin (CPC) exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and inhibitory effects on prostaglandin and leukotriene biosynthesis. Aim- To evaluate the effect of dietary spirulina as an adjunct to SRP on salivary antioxidants level in CP subjects. Materials And Methods- The study was a randomized double-blind clinical and biochemical trial in which 70 subjects with CP in the age group of 40-55 years, reporting to Department of Periodontology, TKDC and RC, New Pargaon, were equally and randomly divided into Test Group (TG) and Control Group (CG). TG was given 2 gm Spirulina capsules daily, after meals for 1 month and CG was not given any supplementary diet. SRP was done at baseline in TG and CG. Whole saliva sample was collected. Clinical and biochemical parameters will be recorded at baseline, 1 month & 3 months.

A single-center, randomized controlled clinical trial was done to assess the periodontal status of the individuals and the presence of red complex microorganisms (RCM) such as Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas.gingivalis and Tannerella.forsythia in the subgingival tissues of periodontal pockets at baseline followed by the application of mangostana gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planing. The periodontal parameters and RCM were again assessed at 3rd month and compared with the placebo group.

Burs Versus Curettes in Root Planing.

This study compares the efficacy of diamond burs and Gracey curettes in non-surgical periodontal treatment of chronic periodontitis by clinical, microbiological, biochemical parameters and scanning electron microscopic investigations on root surfaces. Two quadrants of each of the 12 patients were treated with diamond burs whereas other 2 quadrants were treated with Gracey curettes. Also 21 hopeless teeth received root planing either with diamond burs or curettes or no treatment at all and were then extracted for microscopic evaluations.

Analysis of Soluble TREM (Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells)-1 and -2 in Crevicular Fluid and Associated Bacterial Flora in Patients Affected by Periodontitis

Etiopathology of periodontitis is complex and various risk factors are known : - Bacterial factors: major risk factor. Although the presence of periodontopathogen bacteria is necessary for the onset of periodontitis, these microorganisms are not sufficient for progression of all periodontal disease. - Immune factor: host immune response modulates the disease evolution to destruction or recovery. The most studied cytokine in periodontology is IL-1 that induces various immune reactions and bone resorption directly or indirectly through the stimulation of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) release. PGE2 activates the matrix metalloproteinases that are responsible of the degradation of bone extracellular matrix. Cytokine production, especially TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-8, by some immune cells is modulated by new identified molecules such as Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid cells (TREM) whose role in periodontitis is unknown. The purpose of this study is to compare concentrations of soluble TREM-1 and TREM-2 markers in infected sites and in healthy sites in patients affected by periodontitis. Other purposes are 1. Comparison of soluble TREM-1 and TREM-2 concentrations in healthy sites in patients affected by periodontitis and in healthy patients 2. Comparison of soluble TREM-1 and TREM-2 concentrations before and after etiologic periodontitis treatment 3. Estimation of the correlation between soluble TREM-1 and TREM-2 concentrations and clinical signs of periodontitis 4. Description of soluble TREM-1/TREM-2 ratio before and after etiologic treatment 5. Description of presence of some bacteria in sites analyzed for soluble TREM-1 and TREM-2 6. Search for the most observed bacteria in presence of high concentrations of soluble TREM-1 and TREM-2 before and after etiologic treatment 7. Evaluation of the impact of psychological stress measured through salivary cortisol level in saliva on TREM-1 and -2 expression 8. Evaluation of the impact of psychological stress through stress and anxiety auto-questionnaires (Spielberger and Cohen) on soluble TREM-1 and TREM-2 concentrations in crevicular fluid of healthy and pathologic teeth.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between initial probing depth (IPD) and changes in clinical parameters following non-surgical periodontal treatment (NPT) in chronic periodontitis patients. Material and Methods: A total of 1672 periodontal pockets having 3 mm≤IPD≤9 mm in 15 chronic periodontitis patients were included. NPT consisting of oral hygiene instructions, scaling and root planing was applied in two sessions. Probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level, gingival recession (GR) were measured before and eight weeks after treatment. Pocket sites were grouped according to their IPD and root number of teeth as single- or multi-rooted.

Epigenetics and Periodontal Treatment

Objective: The aim of this pilot study is to evaluate the alterations of epigenetic patterns in periodontally diseased individuals, before and after periodontal treatment, also in comparison to periodontally healthy patients. Materials & methods: Twenty patients were voluntarily enrolled in two groups: 10 participants with healthy periodontium, and 10 participants with chronic periodontitis. Clinical parameters were recorded and gingival biopsies were collected within the following timelines: At baseline (for both groups), after 15 days (for the diseased group only) and after two months (for the diseased group only).
