The quantification of the proteomes : L-plastin, lipocalin and adiponectin was analysed in the subgingival tissue samples of generalized severe chronic periodontitis patients with and without diabetes mellitus.The demographic and the periodontal parameters were assessed and the correlated with the quantification of the proteins. The mRNA expression was analyzed with RT-PCR and the quantification of protein was done using ELISA.

In this clinical trial, the researchers will investigate the effect of single-file reciprocating file system (Reciproc) versus multi-file rotational file systems (ProTaper Next) on the postoperative pain in adult patients who have necrotic pulp and apical periodontitis. The participants will be assigned by chance to separate groups that compare 2 different treatments, reciprocating single-file system (Reciproc) and rotational multi-file system (ProTaper Next).

Effects of Periodontal Therapy on Markers of Acute Phase Response, Oxidative Stress

This study began enrollment in 2003 with final report completed in October of 2015. This submission is being provided to acquire an NCT number. This study was successfully executed according to protocol with full enrollment and completion of 89.7% of subjects. Subjects were enrolled into a two arm study 1) Combined therapy (scaling and root planing plus Crest products) vs. 2) delayed treatment. Subjects were followed for 6 months and a wide and extensive battery of biological samples were collected to determine the effects of treatment on the local and systemic inflammatory response.

Efficacy of Amoxicillin-metronidazole Compared to Clindamycin in Patients With Periodontitis and Diabetes

Periodontitis is an inflammation of the supporting structures of the teeth, usually caused by specific or groups of microorganisms that results in the progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. the objective of periodontitis treatment is to reduce the number of periodontal pathogens. However, there is not an agreement in the use of systemic antibiotics in patients with diabetes. The purpose of the present study was to determine the efficacy of amoxicillin/metronidazole compared to clindamycin during non-surgical treatment of periodontitis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients and methods In this double-blind, randomized clinical trial, a total of 42 patients with chronic periodontitis and type 2 diabetes were included in a 24-months follow-up. Patients were randomly assigned to treatment with either amoxicillin/metronidazole or clindamycin every for 7 days. Clinical determinations (depth of probing, bleeding at the probe and plaque index) were performed to determine the extent and severity of periodontitis before and after the pharmacological treatment. The intra-group differences were calculated with Wilcoxon rank test. The inter-group differences were calculated with Mann-Whitney test. Sex, bacterial plaque, and bleed to the sounding were summarized using proportions and analyzed with the chi-square method. In all analyses, a P-value of <0.05 (two tailed) was considered statistically significant

Periodontitis is related to host genetics, constitution of the dental biofilm and environmental factors such as smoking. DNA methylation is a mechanism of genetic expression that can inhibit or silence gene expression. In this way several researchers have been dedicated to study the genetic influence on the susceptibility and / or increased risk to periodontal disease. Studies have reported association between several epigenetic biomarkers with periodontal inflammation. Considering the hypothesis that there is an association between smoking and methylation in genes related to periodontal disease, the objective of this study was to verify the DNA methylation pattern in oral epithelial cells of patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) in the promoter of a specific gene involved in the control of inflammation, as suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) 1 in smokers and nonsmokers patients.

This study will review approximately 2000 patient records and compare the prevalence of thyroid disease in three groups with increasing severity of chronic periodontitis.

Melatonin as an Adjunctive Therapy for Chronic Periodontitis.

Background: Melatonin is an endogenous indoleamine synthesized mainly by pineal gland and showed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Moreover, melatonin promotes osteoblastic differentiation and suppresses osteoclastic formation. This randomized clinical trial (RCT) was aimed to assess the additive effect of melatonin supplementation in generalized chronic periodontitis (gCP) patients with insomnia who received scaling and root planing (SRP). Methods: Seventy four gCP patients with primary insomnia participated in this 6-month RCT and randomly distributed between two groups. Melatonin group (MTN+SRP group, n=38) included patients who were subjected to SRP with a 2- month regimen of 10 mg oral melatonin supplementation capsule once daily at bed-time. In the control group (Placebo+SRP group, n=36), SRP was performed for participants provided with matching placebo capsules. The primary treatment outcome included the clinical attachment gain (CAG) after 3 and 6 months of therapy, whereas, the changes in pocket depth ,bleeding on probing (BOP%) and salivary tumor-necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels represented the secondary outcomes.
